I'd say welcome to the club but that's the last thing you want to hear. I feel you pain and frustration though. Any thoughts on fixing versus replacing? I went with replace and haven't looked back. Hang in there. 2010-04-15 23:45:00

That sucks D:

Did you back your system up?

Mhm. I'd rather a fat than a slim tho, I dislike the slim look.

My phat PS3 go ylod, and I went offline for a month and lost all of my save data. Yeah, it sucked. I went with buying a slim, since getting a new one traded for your old will only last around a year, on average.2010-04-16 00:03:00

I have some stuff backed up on USB. The fix option is going to run $202.27, but I'm told it will still be replaced with a 60gb model and they will handle deactivation, etc.

I'm going to see what my options are for backing up at this point. Will keep you guys posted.

Besides that, sorry to hear your PS3 died. It's not worth the fix since it's eventually gonna die again, usually very soon. $100 more would give you a brand new one.

There is a fix... temporary as it may be... but for some, it works for months... for me it worked for about a week and a half. I could probably keep doing it over and over, but eventually I just caved and got a slim. But at least this method will allow you to recover all your data, if not fix the problem for a while.

Download the PDF HERE (http://wheretobuyps3.com/YLOD_fix.pdf)
Watch the Vids HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U70SgRDVcBo)

Materials I bought:
Screwdriver kit (magnetic tipped recommended) $5
Thermal Compound $5
Heat Gun that can handle 350 degree (C) / 600 degree (F) $35

After I finished... I turned on my PS3 and it ran smoothly for about 45 minutes until it crashed again... then it YLODed again whenever I tried to turn it on. So then I held the power sensor down until I hear the 3 beeps thing that brought up the options screen and did a restart from there. My Ps3 then worked for about a week without any problems before it YLODed again, then I did the fix once more and bought a slim... I had enough time to transfer all my data to the slim before it YLODed again. Apparently the fix can work for months at a time, but mine did not. Even so, I got all my info transferred safe n sound.

thanks for posting this cdubb. I'd actually already come across this, but it's good to know that the fix is working for so many people. I realize that in the last few months I've neglected my regular backups and so I have several months worth of hard work on my drive I'd like to salvage if possible.

i've already got the arctic silver compound so its off to buy a heat gun tomorrow. my warranty is already long gone so theres no harm in trying. at this point, the data on the drive is more valuable to me than the system itself. and im pretty hesitant to shell over $200 for a repaired system thats only backed for 3 months.

ill miss the card reader, my gratuitous USB slots, full BC, and pretty case with touch buttons, but Sony's track record is pretty clear: first gen SKUs are unreliable. both my fat PS2s died to DRE.... looks like ylod is going to be this gen's F-up. im just disappointed that all the best parts of the PS3 were cut as cost saving measures.

on the plus side, my laptop is revived after the hard drive died on it earlier this week.... the downs always seem to have their ups

Really? I thought it was just the PS3. I never had a problem with my other Playstations, and I got the PS2 before any price drops. Anyway, it's not just YLOD. Mine has a dead blu-ray drive, which I hear is more common. It definitely is less gruesome, as I could leasurly backup all my stuff (and even play Fat Princess).

Yep... I'm in no rush to run out and purchase another PS3 either.

I've tried a reflow once now. This did not work. I will be trying again soon with a little more heat and will use flux if I can find some. GoW3 is currently stuck in my drive too, and the eject trick will not work.

If I cannot rescue my save data, I'll need to do some soul searching and decide if I'm ready to leave console gaming behind. I've owned three Sony consoles now (2xPS2; 1xPS3) and all are dead. I've heard the slims are failing too. Maybe Sony needs to step up and learn how to properly manufacture electronics. This is stupid.

I agree 100%! And not only about Sony....
Nowadays, they sell us poor quality products (on high price), we keep them 1 year, and then we had too buy them again...

Anyway, sorry about what's happening to you!
My PS3 is also broken, it couldn't read the games discs anymore...
It was still under warranty (less than 1 year), I send it to Sony 5 weeks ago....and I'm still waiting!

Yikes, that is a long time to wait!

Anyways, for those that are out of warranty and willing to go to extra measures to help prevent overheating-related YLOD, I do suggest that you replace the thermal paste on the RSX and Cell chips. Having done a whackload more research on the matter over the last 48 hours, it's clear to me that the stock thermal paste is poor quality and improperly applied.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hREX3F5tUZg/SuUxlcF_upI/AAAAAAAABAM/_BbCmbBf8iw/s400/DSC08006.JPG
This is what my unit looked like (although the photo is not of my system)....paste accumulated on the sides of the chips, and the stuff on the chips was uneven, dried, and cracking. No wonder those solders are frying.

Although I haven't fixed my unit (yet?) I would in a heartbeat replace this paste with Arctic Silver 5 on any unit out of warranty, working or not.

Hmmm... I know that the vids and the PDF say to use Arctic Silver... but I didn't use it. I got some other (probably crappy) brand called Cooler Master. That was the only brand that Fry's Electronics carried and I probably should have done my homework. Maybe I will go fetch a tube of the AS5 and see if my fatty will still work. And yeah, that paste that the factory slopped on there was pretty terrible on mine as well. It was all over the place and probably just globbed on with some factory lineman's finger. Yay Sony!2010-04-18 02:04:00

My 60Gb went phut, I finally did decide to get it reflowed, it now works. I do use it now and again upstairs, but I really just want to preserve it. I'm just gutted I updated it to 3.30, but there you go. I think I'll get a second slim for upstairs and wrap my original in cotton-wool.2010-04-25 21:48:00
