Sack Spinball!DAbsaroka
http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/4293/sackspinball.jpgNot too long ago I mentioned on this site that I was working on a level akin to the levels in the classic Sonic with pinball machine-esque designs. I'm happy to announce that after much building and tweaking it is finished, published and ready to be played! I noticed there are a few pinball machine simulator levels already in existence but not so many levels that put your sackperson into the field in place of a pinball (actually, I found only one concurrently as I was working on my own which wasn't too special), which is what I was aiming to do. There are multiple targets and ramps you can propel yourself into to make scorebubbles appear and several flippers that fling you away upon getting into proximity.
My initial plan was to make this playable by multiple people but after realizing how fast-paced and chaotic the field can become it seems better to play it solo. Not that one couldn't play with more then one person but the speed at which sackboys are flung around it would be easy for them to be thrown off camera and die easily.

This is a survival challenge (as well as the first I've made), but instead of just one chance you can die four times before being deposited at the scoreboard. Like a real pinball machine, you lose one of the four by falling into the central drain, but even as your moving about on the playfield multiple pinballs will eventually be shot in with you which can hamper your ability to move around (or you could potentially use them to your advantage) and eventually flaming fireballs and electrified thunderballs will also be put into play.

The screenshots don't really do it justice but I hope anyone here is willing to check it out and tell me what you think.

Very cool! I saw this on the list, and I can't resist a pinball game. This is a pretty polished game, and has a different feel due to the fact that.... sackboy is the ball! I played it several times. Nice job!2010-04-17 05:35:00

Thanks! Not long after I finished this I found several other levels that were made around the same principal as mine ( there are several with the name "Little Big Pinpall" that I don't know why I didn't find before) and was worried mine wasn't very relevant. Though I do feel mine is better then a lot of them honestly (seriously, it's like some of them didn't do any playtesting at all) 2010-04-18 02:33:00

Just played this and it looked very good.

I had difficulty seeing where I was at times though, probably because the bright lights are a bit too overpowering. Talking of the lights I think there is a bit of cheat available there. I noticed someone scored a ridiculous 800,000 plus. I found out you can grab the lights in the middle and just hang on while bubbles keep coming out on top of you so I guess that's maybe what they did, although that would get very boring after a while but I guess some people don't care about that as long as they get the high score.

I wasn't a fan of the hazards coming after a while though. It would have been hard anyway without that 'cheat' and I would prefer to play it normally without the hazards, especially the electric because the slightest touch from them and you're toast.

Can't believe I forgot you could hang from lights and that probably is how that person got that high a score. One of my biggest fears about this level was that there was a means to exploit something to rack up score bubbles beyond what was reasonable that I had overlooked. I appreciate you bringing this to my attention and I've updated the level so all the lights except the ones above the scoreboard and central drain are enclosed by material so they can't be grabbed onto. The central "sun" target has also been significantly changed so it cannot be exploited for score bubbles as much as before (though it's score potential is still higher then the other means to get bubbles).

Additionally, I also feared the lights might be too distracting to the point of being epileptic so I've subtly toned them down a bit.

As for the fire and thunderballs, given how you have more control over sackboys then you do a pinball in a pinball machine I needed a gameplay mechanic beyond the central drain that would pose a risk as a sufficently skillful player could theoretically play forever if s/he just needed to avoid falling into the drain; and besides, as a survival challenge I needed something within the level that made the difficulty more dynamic, just introducting more pinballs might not serve that purpose as they can be as helpful as much as hazardous and thunderballs only appear after a fairly extended period of time. Though take note that there will never be anymore then two fireballs and one thunderball in play at once and in any event, I've decreased the lifetime and frequency of the thunderballs somewhat.

Now if only I could do something about that 800,000+ score...

Thanks. Glad I could help.

I'm sure when I was hanging on the lights though that were sometimes 3 or 4 thunderballs in play but I'll have another go soon and double check.

As for getting rid of that high score the only way is to delete the level and republish anew. I don't know how many plays you have on it but if not many it would be worth doing that.

The Thunderball emitter is only set to emit one max at a time, so the only thing I can possibly think of that would cause this is if somehow the thunderball was shattered by collision with another object and the lights inside it (made to make it easier to see) were scattered about, which is fairly rare, but a big enough of an issue that I can de-electrify the lights inside to alivate that unforseen issue.2010-04-18 22:03:00

Sack Spinball by @DAbsaroka

Just gonna give you some feedback as I play through the level.

Well that was a hectic few minutes indeed! I see what you're trying with this, but I wanted more points! Most of the points I gained seemed to quickly evade me and fall into the bottomless abyss, but I guess that's down to skill. Still, could have been nice if I'd got the points from creature brains being destoryed as it's a much easier way to gain them. Anyway, the overall layout and design of the pinball machine was nice, but the beginning lacked direction (I went right instinctively which was the wrong way). To be honest it didn't matter much though.

Overall I gave it 4 starsfor the fun factor it had, and the neat design.

Doesn't the giant talking head tell you to go to the left at the beginning? But yeah, I didn't intend for this to be particularly easy.2010-04-19 17:20:00
