Hidy Ho Sackfriends! I am here to ask for your help :-)

As some of you already know, my wife and I are English teachers in China. Every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday we do an "English Corner" with the students that are interested. What we do is give the students a scenario where 2 or 3 of them are talking, and they just have to try to talk in English for about 3 minutes.

So here is where you come in:

It would me VERY helpful if you could just think of some funny or interesting scenarios that the students could try talk about.

Something to keep in mind is that they have limited English vocabularies, so it would be good to keep to simple things.

Here are some ideas that we have done:
2 people get in a car accident, try to blame eachother
Person A finds Person B sleeping on the job
Person A, B, and C are all going to the Moon tomorrow, but they forgot to pack! They should discuss what to bring.

Scenarios involving dating are usually the students favorite type, but anything would be appreciated.

Thanks so much for your help :-)

Cool job, that's what I love about LBPC, you get to meet so many interesting people.

Back on topic though.
Since you say they like dating scenarios how about..
Person A likes person B but B isn't sure so person C has to convince person B to go out with person C.

That is an excellent scenario! I love the idea :-) Last week we did one where Person A and B are trying to figure out how to get Person C interested in them, but this would switch it up so that C is trying to convince B to date A :-)

Thank you so much for the idea :-) I know it may not seem like much to you, but getting good scenarios makes this so much better

Wow, I wasn't expecting a response like this. I'm glad I could help though, hope it goes well.

Here's a fun one.

Person A and B have just met at a party or bar, and person A is very interested.
But it turns out person B is taken, and they're just about to introduce this person: Here comes Person C now!
It's person A's ex!

dum dum duuum!!!

I did a few improv classes where we did some scenes like this. Ours were way more ridiculous though, probably way too convoluted for a language class. for example:
I was the dad, and it was my little girl's birthday. The wife and I arranged for a clown to come over for the kids' entertainment.
When the clown showed up, it turned out he was my ex-lover, and we immediately recognized each other. That was some funny times.

How old are these students, out of curiosity?

Some ideas:

The students represent fans of opposing football (soccer) teams (or some other sport)
The students are hungry and need to decide where to eat, and debate the choices
The students are on a first date and know very little about one another

Thanks for all of the ideas!

LOL, this is great! Sadly, I don't think it would mesh very well with the culture. In Beijing of Shanghai there probably wouldn't be an issue since they are much more Westernized cities, but the city I am in is very small, and I think that the students would either be offended or just not know what the heck is going on. Thanks for the idea though!

This is simple and great. The students LOVE American basketball (and basketball in general), but I'm not so sure that they are familiar with any teams from any sports. I may have to do some research on that though. My best bet may be to use this idea, but have them talking about 2 different basketball players and discuss which is better and why. I think that they would really like that, and they are very familiar with popular basketball players (I could probably do Kobe vs. Micheal Jordan or something :-D ). Great idea!

The students are hungry and need to decide where to eat, and debate the choices

This is a nice simple one. Certainly wouldn't hurt to try it :-)

The students are on a first date and know very little about one another

This is a super obvious one since we know the students like dating ones, but for some reason we hadn't thought of this. Thanks for the idea!

Ask them to debate the intricacies of the song structure in the BTBAM song 'Ants of the Sky'. If they can't do that, get person A to convince person B that item X is best, while person C tried to convince them that item Y is infact better than item X. Item X and Y can be anything, film, band, football team....2010-04-13 17:03:00

Person A ordered a cheeseburger without pickles, and Person B got their order wrong. FIGHT

Person A wants to find a book to read and Person B wants to recommend something.

Person B owned a large stuffed tiger collection, and in an act of anger, Person A smashed it all with a bat. Make Person A apologize.

I really like this one because we could just give them pieces of trash and have them trying to convince eachother which is better and why. Great idea!

This is a great idea! We can even implement McDonalds into it :-P

This is one of those simple ones that is excellent and for some reason I just never thought of it. They love to read so this will be really applicable to them :-)

LOL, we may have to use something other than stuffed tigers since they may just get confused when we start talking about those, but I like the idea of apologizing since we haven't done any of that, and it is something that you sort of need to learn how to do in any language that you want to use.

speed dating might test their skills haha

This is one of my favorite ideas yet. We could say that they have 4 minutes to go on a speed date, so they need to try to discuss everything about eachother in that little time.

Thanks SO much for these AWESOME ideas! We will most likely be implementing most of them either tonight (Wednesday) or tomorrow night.

If you have any ideas, please keep them coming!

they can debate communism and democracy...lol jk

They could play the game 21 questions... or the "I'm thinking of an animal" game, and person B has a certain amount of guesses to figure out what animal the person A is thinking of.

EDIT:
or "I SPY" something _____ ... u know, that game

I'd be glad to :-) We do about 6 or 7 scenarios every day (and we do it three nights a week), so I'll try to post how they go when we do one that was offered by the wonderful folks of LBPC

This is a great scenario that has huge potential to be really funny :-) Thanks!

Actually, we already did "I Spy" and tried "20 Questions" with them, but they are TERRIBLE at it. Even if we have a translator to explain the rules in perfect Chinese, the students still can't play them well. But thanks for the idea :-D

Alrighty, I apologize that it has taken me while to reply, but I got sick over the weekend (and before the weekend), and it has been a crazy busy week so far this week. But I finally have some time, so here we go.

I'm just going to run through the ones that we were able to do last week and let you know how they went:

We did SR20DETDOG's idea, which was:

Person A likes person B but B isn't sure so person C has to convince person B to go out with person C.

This one worked out really well. We had two boys, and one of them was supposed to convince the other to ask another girl from the class out. I was a little worried that they might say something mean about the girl, but it all went perfectly and I think the girl was complimented many times in the dialog. The interesting thing about it was that the boy who was supposed to ask her out ended up saying that he had a girlfriend, so the other one was trying to not only convince him to ask her out, but also to convince him to break up with his other girlfriend.

Overall, this was a great dialog, and we may just use it again :-)

We were also able to do chezhead's idea:

Quick! There is hurricane flying toward your house! You have *Certain time* to get out the door! What do you do?
Person M- Wife
Person N- Husband
Person X- Kid

We did this one last night, and it was really funny. The family was super indecisive. We had to switch it to a fire that was spreading toward their house instead of a hurricane (they said they would prefer fire). We said that the fire would reach the house in 3 minutes, and that is where they started. 2 minites had passed, and nothing had been decided, so we threw a teacher in with them to try to convince them to abandon the house and save their lived. With about 15 seconds left, the teacher managed to literally pull the husband out of the house and the wife and child followed. :-)

One other one that we were able to do was monstahr's:

speed dating might test their skills haha

This one went so well that I felt sick afterwords because I had been laughing so hard. We had a female student go on a 3 minute date with a male teacher, and then we had a male student go on a 3 minute date with a female teacher. We had them pretend to come to the door and knock, and then they walked arm-in-arm around the classroom. It worked SO well! We will be using this scenario on a weekly basis.
When the male teacher was going with the student, he got down on one knee and proposed in middle of it! It was so funny because she had no idea what to do since she was already stuggling with English as it was.

Thank you all so much for the ideas! If anyone can think of more, then please let us know!
