College!

Archive: 44 posts

Alright, so I know there's a large range of ages on this site. This applies to y'all who's 17 and up, I suppose, but you can surprise me. Also, if you're on the college search and stuff as a junior (at least in America), best of luck to you, I could offer advice if you like. IT SUCKS.

I'm currently headed for my freshman year at Brandeis University in the fall and I'm pretty happy about it. A lot of people I talk to dunno about it, or just say something about a jew school (which I guess is true, but that's not why I'm going). It's a small-medium research/liberal arts institution, a fun combination. It's in Waltham, just outside of Boston. I went to the admitted students day today and had a lot of fun. I hope to double major in English and Physics, but who knows what might happen? I might construct my own major.

I'm also excited to have a dorm room in a CASTLE. This influenced my decision more than I care to admit...

It's a pretty good school too, they say they're ranked highly in terms of national universities but I can't be bothered to go and check that myself..

So, where is LBPC going to college(or university)/where have you gone/where are you going/where do you want to go? I have friends headed everywhere, from Penn State to Harvard, so I thought it might be interesting to ask here too.

Haha, well 2 years should give you enough time to prepare.. that's really cool though. I'm bad with an oven, I can almost make toast and that's it.2010-04-13 04:27:00

I'm a senior at Grand Valley State University. Whatever you do, turn that physics major into a minor!

Anyways, that sounds like a teaching career path... yes? I'm going into Mathematics.

say what? uh oh.

teaching would be cool, yes, i was thinking something more along the lines of science journalism... but i fear that might turn into writing textbooks. i would hate that.

nice teachers are cool.......

and that statement could work two ways....

see as a teacher you'll have to analyze things like that....

also if you would be algebra teacher this would be what my test would look like:

18! That's.. impressive. I wouldn't like going to college so young though. I might miss out on things.

And your master's, also impressive. Good luck!

In my case I've finished my bachelor's last year majoring in architecture at Berkeley; the last two semesters were brutal but in hindsight it was a good time to graduate when I did. My college was gradually increasing in semester fees as I was going there but the very semester I finished I learned there was going to be a huge hike in fees as well as a big dive in both the quantity of classes and their quality...

Not sure if I want to go for my masters anytime in the future but I kinda want to get some on hand working experience first at the least (kinda been a mixed bag with that, though).

The answer is 5 couldn't resist
As for college, I'm still in grade 12 at school and probably won't be going to college. I'm planning on getting an aprenticeship as a light vehicle mechanic.

Hey monstahr,

Brandeis is a fantastic university. I'm currently a fourth year Bio major/Gender Studies minor at the University of Chicago, and I'm working as a research assistant for a doctor who went to Brandeis for her undergraduate degree. She majored in philosophy and subsequently went here for med school. She's inspirational in so many ways, and she tells me all the time how much she enjoyed Brandeis.

I was so nervous transitioning from high school to college, but it ended up being a really pleasant experience. And judging from what my boss tells me about her experiences with Brandeis, I'm sure you have nothing to expect but good times.

Good luck in college Freshie!,

I'm a Junior, and have been getting literally hundreds of letters/emails from colleges due to that fact I scored in the 86 percentile on my PSATs...

Like while I was sleeping, I got two new emails from Cabrini and University of New Haven... >_>

Been getting some from NYU, Lee and Washington, and stuff, and it's been annoying.

Chances are I'm either going to the community college at Kutztown where my step dad works, or I'll move with my parents to Flordia when I graduate and go to college there.

Many years ago now I was accepted into Texas A&M and the University of North Texas, and eventually enrolled in UNT. I had a dorm room, my meals for the semester were paid for, it was time to do it up with my high school friends in COLLEGE, SON!

And then I had a good hard think. Something of my own version of a quarterlife crisis I guess you can say. I abandoned it. It was a huge decision. The path my entire life until now would take was changed fundamentally by this decision. I didn't go to College. There was a period where I couch-surfed and explored other possibilities, I got rid of my possessions, had no address to speak of, and did a bit of travelling (even got booted out of Canada at one point). But in my bones a commitment to University was not there.

Nearly 8 years later I've really cemented my thoughts on College, and I have more than a bit of regret about not doing it. Although my "couch-surfing" days were certainly a concentrated form of it, I missed out on the real college experience. And there's something to say about it.

The old cliches are true. College IS the time to experiment. College is the time to be young and to try a billion new things. It's not quite so much a time to study like crazy - the studying is a great structure to keep absolute chaos at bay, but College is a time for you to figure out who you are. Experiment. Do stuff that scares you. Hell, try being someone ELSE. This is the REAL education you get from a University. I recommend doing the whole 9 yards. Move away from home and live in a dorm or some cheap shared housing near campus. Pull yourself out of your comfort zone.

You can do this all anyway. I certainly did. But what College gives you is a structured, communal setting where the experience is shared. This is what I missed out on.

These are the reasons I would recommend attending a University. Career? Diploma? Majors? meh. 4 years is piddly-nothing, but that age is a crucial one for figuring yourself out. It's amazing now to look back on myself when I was 18, 19, and realize that I was NOT me yet! I really wasn't! I have to laugh remembering what I believed in, what I was like in my deepest insides, and how much I've sorted that all out now.

Mountains out of mole-hills when I was a kiddo. Now it's all mole-hills.

Or maybe it's all mountains.

Ah hell, I haven't figured anything out yet.

Truer words were never spake! University is such a unique experience that you will almost certainly not encounter anything quite like it anywhere else in your life, so if you choose to go that route, then throw yourself right in from day one and jump on every single opportunity it offers you (yes, even those ones ).

America's school system confuses me.

British schooling FTW.
believe me, it confuses us too. there are very very few people who actually enjoy the american college process - it's absolute murder.

jeff - cool! i have a friend attending UChicago (a sophomore?), i think he really enjoys it but he's always working a bit too hard to talk to. i hope to repeat her good experience. thanks for the kind words!

teebonesy - you ought to write speeches or something... i can't really identify with what you're saying yet, but that sure was inspirational. i know people who are putting off college for year, in order to do social work or something. i feel like i would lose all the momentum i've been building for 4 years. i would burn out.

I graduated from Missouri State University in 2004 with a degree in Computer Information Systems. At the time, I was pretty loathsome toward my college experience. I hated the fact that I had to spend money to take classes that I didn't care about and all that. However, thinking back on it, I wish I would have tried more things while I was there and ventured out of my confort zone a bit.

Thankfully, I was able to do that when my wife attended seminary and we both lived on the campus. I was able to participate in a lot discussions and debates about theology and philosophy, two subjects that interested me, but I never really got to explore in my business related field. So, even though I wasn't in class, if was a great experience simply interacting with the other students there.

I'll be headed to University of Iowa next year...I plan on majoring in religious studies, specifically Islam. Reason being, I would like to get involved with the gov't, CIA would be nice. I will also be taking arabic classes. Personally I am not that religious: I would say I'm 60% science, lol, and 40% religious, ( I wont tell u what). But, in my opinion knowledge about other's cultures, and specifically religion, is one of the greatest "things" to know. After all, religion is one of the biggest factors involving world issues and conflicts, and in peoples lives.2010-04-13 22:33:00

I'm a senior at Grand Valley State University. Whatever you do, turn that physics major into a minor! Grand Valley? I checked that place out in my college search. We were almost college-mates (though you would've graduated before I was admitted... I'm not sure what I'm getting at, here.)

Anyway, yeah, I started my college search aroundabouts in my Junior year, I guess. I found Lawrence Tech (in Southfield, near Detroit) last September or so and it just fit. Got accepted about a month later and have been doing everything else ever since. Tonight I'm actually going to a scholarship award dinner. It'll be my first function at LTU where I'll actually be recognised as an incoming student, instead of a prospective or incoming student. I'm pretty excited.

EDIT: Forgot to mention my major- I'm gonna major in Chemistry, likely with a minor in CompSci. The goal is to use what I learn and go into forensic science. Even if that doesn't pan out right away, with a combination of Chem/CompSci, I should be able to get in just about anywhere...

There's a lot of people who aren't. For me, it just "clicked," you know?

Anyway, yeah, I'm not officially a Lawrence Technological University scholar. The dinner last night was pretty cool, though the speakers weren't the most engaging. I did get food and a framed certificate, though. I enjoyed myself.

Alright, so I go to college in, gasp, 5 days, so I thought rather than make a new thread I'd revive my old one.

I was wondering if anyone else is off to school soon, or back to school? Also, I wanted to ask for advice to current students on what I want to bring with me. Vital objects.

In the UK for most people you leave secondary school (or high school) at 15 or 16, then either go to 6th form, college or can then go on to find work.

I'm 16 years old and going to college. I would like to go to university and get a career in video game design.

I'm leaving in... (looks at date)... 12 days for the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in Israel. It's partnered with the Berklee College of Music in Boston, so I'll finish the last two years of my degree there.

I'm getting a major in film scoring. Leaving home, going to a country with a different first language (I know some hebrew, but I'll have lessons for the first couple months to improve it - school in Israel starts November 1st and ends early July). Staying in dorm-ish things in a little village about 15 minutes off campus - there's a conservatory of music in the village which is pretty awesome.

So yeah. Slightly nervous, very excited!

Congrats dude!

I leave in like 12 hours. Holy ****.
I'm real sad about leaving my friends and family, I thought I'd share a quote I think relavent:

"The best thing for being sad," replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, "is to learn something. That's the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then - to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn."
From T.H. White's The Once and Future King. My favorite book ever.

Well I start my freshman year at Community college in about two weeks. Hopefully college will be better than High School, I was bored out of my frickin mind at High School

Also, GE requirements?!? you gotta be kiddin me, I rly think its kinda stupid they make you take so many classes unrelated to your major. Complete waste of time and money IMO. I rly think they should just let people concentrate on their major throughout college.
