Actually, NEWB was the original spelling of the word, But WoW Players warped it and changed the meaning from "Newbie player" To NOOB "Unskilled and annoying" Get your words right! | 2010-04-13 03:03:00 Author: Joshofsouls ![]() Posts: 1569 |
WoW had nothing to do with the word. It's just a word that slowly evolved through gaming history that we don't bother to keep track of. | 2010-04-13 03:07:00 Author: CyberSora ![]() Posts: 5551 |
Actually, i beg to differ, the word "Newb" Became popular in 2001 at a WoW convention in san francisco. Players repeatedly shouted NEWB during a LAN party, thus bringing it to public ears, sparking many words like NARB, CHOOB, and even PL0X -Source: Internet word history Pg. 24 BAM! Moved to General Chat. Wouldn't General Gaming have been a better place? Since Noobs/Newbs are to do with gaming... ![]() | 2010-04-13 11:44:00 Author: Doopz ![]() Posts: 5592 |

PwN'D World of Warcraft wasn't released until 2004, so your source is entirely incorrect. Also, you can't play WoW on a LAN (unless it's hacked and using a private server.) I remember seeing the word Newbie/Newb/Noob as early as 1996 or 1997, but it was actually coined by the military (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newbie) in Vietnam. When I was in high school/college, it was popular on forums everywhere for describing someone new to the site/program/game or what-have-you. While the sources cited above contain some more popular references that may or may not contain some nuggets of truth, the usage of the term itself on the web has its roots in the infancy of internet culture, most likely starting with mid-90s BBS sites or early mega ISPs such as AOL and Prodigy. (After reading the wikipedia article, I was somewhat right... it has been traced back to a USENET group. For those of you that don't know, look up your interwebs history, kids! ![]() The term "newb" typically takes on the original meaning of the word and can be applied generally, whereas "noob" is more apt to describe someone who is dense, immature, or otherwise inept at something to the point where it is laughable, and is commonly confined to the context of internet culture/gaming/electronics. im not normally using that term to describe people i see, but there are sometimes such difficult people to cope with, that it reminds me of that term and makes me giggle like the asain schoolgirl inside me. Signs: 1. spends long periods of time typing on the lbp typer thing in popit 2. normally what they say is near incomprehensible and/or spellt as if sounded out 3. owns at least one half-assed costume from an emo costume tutorial [must be emo] 4. will capture all of your things on the spot, as if you weren't there 5. at some point several times within an hour, they think you hate them 6. if you dont shower them in compliments, it gets worse 7. they add you 8. they will never stop hitting you, no matter how uninteresting that feature is by this point 9. theyll cuss as if they didn't know lbp can censor 10. [insert remark here] well, maybe im being stereotypical, but i notice those traits with some of them. not trying to hate tho XD its just funny | 2010-04-13 22:58:00 Author: Voodeedoo ![]() Posts: 724 |
