The Mythos ~ Act I ~ AwakeCogSpartan
http://i796.photobucket.com/albums/yy247/CogSpartan/lbpmythos1.pngIn a land of mythology, where gods and humans both co-exist in harmony, a man slayed his family. Waking up in a cage high above the lands he is given a job by Fellinus, the queen of all gods. If he completes his, task he shall be set free.
Many months ago I started on The Mythos, I had many ideas and a large story for it. I started to create the first level, but stopped working on it, and playing LBP. After the water pack came out I returned to this project with new ideas, and more interest.

The Mythos is like God of War; it's in a mythological area where gods and humans live, you meet many of the gods along your journey, and I accidentally made a few parts of the story a lot like God of War, but I can assure you, this series' story is NOT God of War's.

The Mythology in this series was created by me, there are no stolen gods from other mythologies. This also means I have to tell a lot of back story. This back story comes in the form of 'Tablets' which are the secrets in the levels. Find all these in a level, you get a seal, find all the seals, and on the last level you will unlock something awesome (Which MAY be another level)

But, let's talk about this level: It's a heavily story based level, with some platforming and basic puzzles. This specific level is located on the Mountain of the Sun, which is where the Temple of the Sun is at. You start off in a cage, but Fellinus, the queen of the gods, tells you about why you are there, and what you need to do to be freed. Then you are sent up the Pathway of Light, which is VERY old, and has been unattended for a long time, as Solos, (God of the Sun) only cares about his temple, and his garden. After you pass the many obstacles, you reach the front of the Temple of the Sun, which will be the next levels location.

(BTW: If you are playing the level for a second time, to skip the introduction, put the 'Start' sticker on the top left vines. You can slightly see the word 'skip' on it.)

Part One: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgSfzoDgKTI

Part Two: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHldssLI7KE&feature=channel

Each level will take you through a different location in Mythos, giving a different visual look, and new story elements.

The story WILL have man twists and turns, and so I'm hoping that that will keep every interested and looking forward to the next level.

I hope you enjoy this level, and the next one shall come soon.

Wow that's a long level Cog - how did you manage that on thermo!

I like the deep story a lot and the humor of the triangle guy. lol Really challenging in places - felt really proud to have finished it 5 stars & hearted from me.

This is a great level. I really enjoyed the scale of it - both in terms of the epic story and the style and sheer size of the level. It's very absorbing, too, not just because of the story and the length of the level but because you have to spend time exploring and looking for the Mythos tablets. The rest of the gameplay is excellent as well. I liked the underwater puzzle which takes some thought and the boss was a challenge too. I always manage to die a few times there - one day I'll work out how to kill off the heads without disappearing with them into the gas but I haven't succeeded yet, lol!

Great visual style - classicly simple most of the time but with some touches of gorgeousness here and there. I loved the sun symbols.

I have to agree with Morgana about the triangle guy. He really cracks me up. "Yawn "Could you be any slower?""(or words to that effect) and the stairs quip are my favourites. The last one even makes me laugh after I have just lost a shed load of points falling off the column platforms!

Anyway, fantastic level and I am very proud to say I did eventually find all the tablets and get the reward so I am very much looking forward to the next instalment.

5 stars and hearted.

@shropshirelass Haha, I never really intended for him to be funny, he was supposed to be annoying, then more serious. But I'm glad you both like him

Thanks for the kind comments!

EDIT: I've updated the level a bit, making some things look better and fixing some small glitches.

sounds good...going online in a bit to check it out...tho i have a suggestion

maybe change the god of the suns name to something more like "solaris" or something with the sun word in it...only because is current name sounds close to helios in my head...and since you dont want it to be that close to GoW this could help seperate it...if only by a bit...always loved mythology and creating this seperate world like you are...so lemme know if you are open for ideas id be glad to pitch some of my own to you for the level series

@Shadowcrazy Hm, well, maybe you could think up something for the equivalent of 'Hell'. As long as it works for being both a place and thing. I also changed Hethius' name to Solos, which is close to Solo, which means Sun in latin 2010-04-18 01:03:00

Great looking level Cog and an interesting story.

I think I missed some of it at the start though because the magic mouths disappeared too soon even though I'm a quick reader.

I was enjoying it although it was way too dark in lots of places for me to see where to go or what to do. If you're going to make the player have to figure out on their own what to do you really need to make it light enough so they can actually see the environment around them, otherwise they are quite literally groping in the dark.

When I got to the broken bridge and had to find another route i tried to get up that invisible ladder. I jumped onto the first step but couldn't get up higher because I kept hitting my head on the step above. A little indication that it wasn't accessible yet would have saved a lot of wasted time and effort on my part.

I eventually found the way down but again that was by pure luck. I couldn't actually see to go there because of it being too dark again.

Same trouble through the caves. I spent probably 4 times longer getting through there than I should have simply down to the darkness again.

However the real killer for me was the water part. I grabbed the sponge with the blue light but even with that it was practically impossible to see the spikes. I didn't even know there were spikes there until I died on them and even when I knew i just continued to die on them over and over again. It's just way too dark and the blue light is too dim to help at all and I ended up quitting the level there.

I would love to play this again but unless you lighten it drastically I won't bother. Don't tell me to lighten my tv please as others with dark levels have in the past because my tv is perfect. It's up to creators to use the global lighting tool correctly ( everyone not just you ) and not make things dark just because they can. I could make all my levels pitch black too if I wanted too but I would rather let players see.

First of all, I thought the story was great! The introduction sets up the story well and the tablets scattered around the level were interesting to read!

Like most people, I thought the little triangle dude was hilarious and probably the most sarcastic LBP character i've seen!

The design of the level was great! The introduction in particular was up there with some of the best!
I think the design of the 3 headed serpent could be improved upon however. I got the feeling you were trying to make each head look different as you used 3 different eye stickers which didn't do much to give them their own identity.

The gameplay was great especially the underwater puzzle. I rarely have problems in levels that are supposed to be dark but it was a little difficult to see sometimes in the underwater sections. I think an LED on the different layers to help define the edges would be enough to solve the problem though!

I'm looking forward to finding out where the story goes, so good luck making part 2!

Overall :star::star::star::star: and a heart!

Thanks for the feedback on my level!

Hm, ok then, I'll try to add some lights down there. Thanks for the feedback.

EDIT: I've added many more lights in the underwater parts (Made them look natural too) so hopefully you guys can see better, as I'd love if you could see if you can beat it now

I also made the 3 heads of the Fyros look a bit different and have it's own style of sorts.

ok now im lost....im trying to climb this tree with a ladder but it wont let me i keep hitting my head on it and idk where else to go :/

EDIT: nvm i read mr.vistas comment...and even tho it didnt help much i eventually decided to check the cliff and see the alternate route

anyways feedback will be on this post...ill edit when im done

FEEDBACK TIME:

great level

pros:
great humor
great boss battle
funny triangle guy
great visuals
nice story
nice effects

cons:
*sometimes you dont know where to go
*some places are still too dark to see
*the whole another route mr.vista mentioned...wouldnt know about the edge of the cliff unless someone told me
*the underwater puzzle got annoying...kept dying no matter what...THANK GOD you made it that i could spawn multiple keys and they wouldnt dissolve otherwise i woulda never finished, seriously i couldnt take it with me because i kept trying to avoid spikes and thats all i ever hit, eventually after so many tries the keys kept piling up until it was safe for me to swim to the other side without having to hold the key and then pick it up on the other side and keep swimming...needless to say that underwater puzzle was the only thing i could say i HATED about the level.
*oh and the tablet i collected all the text dissappeared...so i couldnt read any of your lore sir ...also couldnt find the rest lol

anyways all in all i liked the level a lot

@Shadowcrazy I'm gonna go try to make that drop down part more obvious. And still too dark? Can you please give me some exact locations, it would help me a lot.

Also, to anyone wanting to know how the whole series (should) look, here's a list: (Warning, so spoilers ahead!)

Act I ~ Awake ~ Climbing the Pathway of Light

Act II ~ Sunshine ~ Help Solos with his problem, and find the entrance to the underworld (Which needs a better name D: )

Act III ~ Depths ~ Use the elevator of fates to reach the underworld, and find the Underkeeper.

Act IV ~ Within ~ Kill Sprytos to be freed of the maddening 'hell' world, then kill (the giant worm which has no name yet) and escape it.

Act V ~ Lost ~ Make your way through the sandy lost temple, and pass the underwater chambers to reach the mountain of gods.

Act VI ~ Legendary ~ Climb the castle the gods reside in to find Fellinus.

Act VII ~ Mythos ~ Fight (the final boss) to save Mythos. (Final level)

Act ? ~ (I may make this some secret level only opened by the 6 seals found in levels I through VI, then unlocked with a locked key from Act VII)

to be honest id be more concerned with the water puzzle..its really infuriating

also you could call the underworld something like the abyss...or el infierno

the worm can be simply called "wyrm" or if you want something more difficultly named i can think of something better

the underkeeper could be the gatekeeper...or maybe DEATH himself

ill think up more ideas later

The level has an interesting opening and level designing. The triangular character is funny and there's a lot of interesting multi paths. The only problem I had with this level is the left underwater switch. You need to add the lighting to make the sponge object visible and an air bubble around the switch.2010-04-24 17:29:00

Right, first off; laaaaag! It was a bit annoying in places, was okay here and there.

The design was nice, nothing breathtaking, but nothing ugly either. I like your pillars/columns. The triangular character was funny, and you had a really cool backstory.

Gameplay was a bit of a problem; the boss was absolutely terrible. Jumping onto the heads was tricky seeing as that's where they shoot fireballs from and they almost always do so when their heads are down low; the only chance you get to jump on them. But I can live with that. I should mention I'm not a fan of brain bosses, but the brains on the underside of your boss were nigh on impossible to get without dying- I presume that I was expected to land on another head to survive? In which case killing this boss and surviving is impossible if the last brain is on the underside. This coupled with lag just ****** me off- hated this boss. Suggestion: have a final brain be revealed when all others are destroyed, so that the last brain is guaranteed to be near the platform. And have a ground emit beneath you when you kill the whole thing, so that you won't fall into the gas after destroying the beast, which feels like a cheap death to me.

The water puzzle I really disliked; it was a great idea with the layer changing, but poorly executed. It was a teensy bit dark so I couldn't see, and it sorely needed instructions. Also the fact you have to get it right in one go is annoying, it means no player will get it first time since they probably won't know what to do. However, others might say that this is challenging in a good way. Fair enough.

All in all, it was a good level despite those two major problems (at least I think they're problems). It could use a bit of work, but I enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next installment. I gave it :star::star::star::star: but I feel that's a bit generous at the moment. All of the above is meant to be constructive criticism.

@Blackfalcon Thanks for the feedback.

Now, about the boss, each head is grabbable, so you shouldn't be forced to fall off after destroying the brains in the bottom, infact, you can destory 5 brains by hanging from 1 spot under a boss. This is also meant to make you think about which ones to destroy when. If you leave the one on the top for last, you can use that to ace the boss.

As for the underwater puzzle, The spike part (which is the only part that can kill you) isn't very long, so if you die, it shouldn't be much of a pain to redo.

Also, with your lag problem, I can't say I encountered this. I've played the level a lot and it's never lagged

Again, thanks for the feedback.

And for all those wondering about act II, it's close to being finished. I actually built the whole thing with a friend this time, so it should come out great

Wow Cog, this was a really great level! You can instantly tell as you start the level that you put a lot of detail into this, so it honestly got me hyped up to finish the beggining cut-scene and start playing (But I payed attention)

Again, I really like how much detail you put into this level. I loved all of the secret rooms, and I hope for them to come back, maybe make some two player challenges to get a few of the tablets.

The water puzzle was a bit tricky. I got to the room past the spikes, where you're supposed to get the second sponge, but at that point I was completely confused. However I managed to get through it, although it would be nice to add some sort of help messages, or more lights.

Anyways, I gave this a :star::star::star::star:considering it was a bit tricky, but very well thought out! Can't wait to see more

And It is quite ironic that I'm posting this, considering...well, you will all find out soon enough...:kz:

EDIT: I also think the Underworld should be called "Fallen"

The boss is a bit too strategic for my liking, but I'd call that personal preference over general consensus. =)

I ran out of air loads of times, particularly whilst going for the second key. I'd suggest an extra air supply beside the keys to allow the player to figure out where to go.

My connection is terrible, it may very well be that.

Looking forward to the sequel!
