New Cave(ish) Level by piggabling

Archive: 9 posts

Alright, I totally abandoned my last level. Why? Because it couldn't even hold my own interest whilst I created it. I may go back to it, I may not. Now I'm working on a new level that will be set mainly underground and inside caves. I'm aiming for more of a platformer, but puzzles definitely need to be involved. I'm also trying to make it a fairly long level; 10-35 minutes to complete.

But, I need help from you guys! I've got a couple of questions that I'd like you guys to answer:

1) Do you want the caves to be more cartoonish (Mm-style) or realistic?
2) More platforming, less puzzles or less platforming, more puzzles?
3) If I could get someone who'd be willing to help me a bit and is on the same schedule as I, then would you guys like a 2x Level?

I'll probably have more questions later for you.

Also, any ideas for puzzles/design, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!

Thank you for taking the time to read

Here are my thoughts on a cave level:

(1) and (2) - If you want to do a more cartoonish level, I say go with more platforming, less puzzles. If you are doing realistic, then less platforming, less puzzles. I personaly would love to see a Cartoonish Cave level with a balanced mixture of both puzzles and platforming.

(3) - A 2x level is always nice if you can get someone on at the same time as you. I would actually like to see some 2x parts in the cave level.

So, in my opinion, I believe a Cartoonish (Mm style) with a balanced mixture of puzzles and platforming with some 2x Puzzles thrown in would be perfect. I hope you decide to use layers to the fullest and here's hoping for a great level!

Thanks! I've been leaning toward an Mm style cave, but I'm unsure of how to do it. Could you give me an idea? Maybe a level that does if well. I just can't put it in my head...2010-04-12 02:21:00

Hmmm...Just take your inspiration from some cave levels in the Story Levels (I can't think of some right off the bat). Maybe also take some inspiration from something like comphermc's Mine level, but more funky. Keep humor and fun your priority and just make the level a blast.2010-04-12 02:38:00

I personally like realistic caves, so that's the style that I would recommend. I still think you can make platforms and puzzles in a realistic style. I've done a couple of cave levels and imo, I think that the basic metal material is the best one for caves. This material has one of the best textures when lit correctly. If you decide on making it realistic, you should check out my levels (especially Descent 2) and hopefully that will help you with inspiration.
If you decide to go cartoonish, I would definitely recommend All Mine! by Comphermc. It's pretty much the best cartoonish cave that I've seen to date.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for splitting the vote... Haha! I'm joking! Seriously, thanks for your input. I've already decided on my materials (well at the moment). I just bought the "Incredibles" DLC and was planning on using the ceramic pieces and the rock material providedby the pack. Right when I saw the two materials I thought they'd be perfect for a cave. They look a little unconventional for a "real" cave, so that was the reason I was leaning toward a cartoonish cave. It just seemed perfect at the moment but I'm beginning to second guess... I know I shouldn't because then I'll end up ditching the level.

If I do make a more cartoonish cave, would enemies be something that should be included? And a lot of moving things throughout? I just think that the more cartoonish I mak it, the less others will like the level. My mind must be wandering in the wrong direction... I just can't thing of anything cartoonish that would fit inside a cave... Hah! I'm hopeless...

Depends on what you think a cool-looking Cartoonish cave should be. I'm sure that if you just take a leap of faith and just go all-in with your imagination, it will reflect in your level. If you think enemies would be a nice asset, then use 'em! The more you're devoted, no matter how the level turns out, people will see that and love it.

I'm not splitting my vote!! lmao
I vote Realistic all the way!!
Now back to your problem. I've been there! When I was making part 2, I had lots of trouble trying to come up with platforms that would be in cave. The problem that I had was that my cave was 'unexplored' so I couldn't have any man-made structures, machines, etc. It was all rock... So it really depends on what's inside your cave. Take rtm's for example: It's an amazing cave and he was able to make all sort of platforming bits and puzzles since it was an abandoned facility. So if you give us more details, maybe we can help you out with enemies and stuff.

Now, the fact that you're making it cartoonish doesn't mean that ppl are going to like it less. Some odd materials end up looking perfect for different scenarios. When Comphermc told me that he was making a cave out of red wood, I thought he was crazy. But once I saw it, I thought it matched perfectly. So if you believe that that new material is going to look good, go for it!

Thanks again!

As for more details... Well I don't have much so far. Juas about 2 minutes worth of solid, detail-less platforming. Puzzles and creative-ness are my weakpoints. I've got to let my imagination fly next time I create I suppose. I'm aiming for a gradual transition from deserted caves to a man-made enviornment. If that helps at all. I think I may ditch the deserted part to go from "little interaction by man" to all-out man made. It sounds confusing only because I can't explain it well.

Now I need to add another material to brighten up the dull, grayish looks of the level right now. A sort of accent that may seem a bit out of place at first, but slowly seem more and more fitting throughout the level. I was thinking of putting in some colored cardboard or something to add more unique style, but I know there would be a more fitting solution. I'll have to experiment a bit more and get back with everyone. Thanks an awful lot for the help!
