Super loud PS3 fan (going to fix it)

Archive: 11 posts

Okay, so I got a 40GB PS3 on the cheap for uni (?120) and it works a treat. However, the fan seems to go to maximum fan speed almost straight away, and it's so loud. My 60GB is nowhere near that loud. I can also hear something rattling around in there! Anywho, I'm going to open it up and reapply thermal paste (with the help of a youtube vid), and it will hopefully sort the problem. I've heard that this can resolve it so I'm willing to give it a go. Worst comes to worst, I break the PS3 and sell it as faulty for about ?80, and I easily got my ?40 worth with it.

So any of you guys got super loud fans? Ever tried to fix it? How?

I'll keep you guys updated with how it goes Maybe with pics too.

Yep mine is so so loud. It also doesn't go off fully when I turn it to stand by either. To get the fan off fully I have to switch it of properly at the back...2010-04-11 03:54:00

My PS3 is fairly loud as well, louder then older Playstation incarnations but I think it might really just be designed that way to deal with the slight cooling issues that the original Playstation and, to a lesser extent, the PS2 had.
However, mine works more or less just fine though faint semi-translucent lines scroll up the screen occasionally and I'm wondering if that's an issue.

But if something inside is noticably rattling then that probably really is an issue

The oldies are way louder than the Slim version. I don't really know why but It's what I've noticed...2010-04-11 18:09:00

Yeah mine's in a bit of a state, but I don't mind too much as I got it cheap, and it's not the end of the world if it breaks! Anywho I've got my thermal paste now so I'll be taking it apart and applying it tomorrow Wish me luck, I'll report back how it went! Taking it apart will be easy. Putting it back together will be the fun part 2010-04-13 02:26:00

Do you have the auto start console when remote play starts option turned on on your ps3.

If so turn it off and the fans wont be on during standby.

That's actually a possibility! It did start around the time I got my PSP Go. I will have a look, thanks!

Well guys i took it apart fully... and applied it and it seemed to of worked! a bit! Took much longer for the fans to get to full. However when they did, and it cooled the ps3 back down, they dont go down again :/ unfortuanatly this seems a problem i cant avoid. Though my room is boiling so I now have the 60gb one in my room which is always behaving and my 40gb downstairs... which never gets to loud temp as the room is cool But yeah... success!2010-04-14 19:05:00

I thought I noticed in the last few months up until yesterday that my PS3's fans were spending more and more time in overdrive. Yesterday's YLOD seems to confirm that.2010-04-16 14:37:00
