Wonderland NightmareFancy_Zombie
http://i1012.photobucket.com/albums/af249/Fancy_Zombie/Little%20Big%20Planet%20Levels/APhoto2.jpgThe first of a four-part series. In this level, you must trek through the mushroom swamps (pictured) and fight swamp dwellers to reach Ze Artist's house. Ze Artist is one of the few characters of the wonderland that can help you.
The story: you are trapped in the wonderland by Elva, a terrible witch who dwells in a mountain, and you must embark on a journey through several different locales to finally reach Elva's fortress to destroy her and be released from her magic with the help of some friends you make in the wonderland.

This is my most recent finished levels, although I have probably five more completely different levels that are maybe 10-20% done, but that's aside the point. I would really like to get feedback on what is bad about this level in any aspect - visuals, gameplay, story, etc. and I can take constructive criticism. I don't want to hear a bunch of people just saying bad things about the level that don't help me, which is why I posted this level in F4F. I would really appreciate it if people could play this level and give me helpful feedback and if anyone would like some feedback on one of their levels, just leave the name of the level in your reply and I will play it as soon as I can and get back to you. Thanks to everyone who plays my level and helps me make it better

*Update 2* I probably should have said this a while ago, but I've completed the update to the level, changing the boss and fixing small things, and republished the level. I hope you enjoy the changes

*Update* Okay, I've gotten some time to work on this lately and the first boss is being completely changed, I cleared up the confusion between thin mushrooms and regular ones, and I made a few minor changes other than those. The update will be implemented as soon as I finish changing the first boss, which I think is way more fun so far (though I'm finding the logic quite hard to build...) I think the changes will make the level much more enjoyable.

Also, thank you so much to everyone who has played my level and I'm glad you all enjoyed it
I've been getting great feedback on it, so once again, thank you all so much!

Hi I just finished this level.

I thought that you did a really good job. I love the visuals and the gameplay. I thought that the boss fights were original and cool. I thought that everything was just well constructed. I liked how every area had a distinct look to it. I thought that the platforming in Ze Artist's house was very difficult but I didn't find it so hard that I quit.

My comments would be that in the mushroom swamp, the mushrooms that are just thin and there for decoration confused me and I died a couple times expecting to land on a mushroom. I also thought that you should switch some of the checkpoints out for infinite ones. I know that I almost ran out of lives a few times and I am one of those people that have a tendency to just quit there and move to a new level.

Other then those little things I thought this was an amazing level and gets five stars from me. If you have a chance, can you check out my retro retribution level?

Thank you so much for the great feedback shebhnt

I was wondering about the mushroom thing and I was going to originally just have thin mushrooms in the background only, but then put them in the foreground anyways. I'll probably change that when I get around to it (eventually lol).

If you remember, which areas do you think needed infinite life checkpoints?

And did you find the boss fights too difficult? or were they pretty balanced in your opinion?
I know they get pretty crazy in multiplayer

Thank you again for the feedback, it's very helpful and thank you for the great rating too
I will check out your retro retribution level as soon as I can and if I don't get back to you within a couple of days, just PM me and hound me down until I do lol
I check this site fairly regularly, so I'll see any messages you send me

Hey I played and I have to agree on the mushrooms. I got fooled into thinking I was going to land on a mushroom but nope it was thin and then death! I actually did lose all my lives on one cp  It was the first mushroom bit I basically was wrapping my head around the fact some were thin so that caused my failure. My suggestion would be to make something different about the thin ones, colour perhaps or maybe add some shading. I know some games have foreground objects completely black but there is a bit of distance there with parallax scrolling but it could work.

The bosses now, the second one was ok, pretty predictable and reliable to dodge. The first one though I thought was quite cheap, his shots were not high or low, they were anywhere in between and I died so many times due to this fact. The range is so small too which makes it very hard to move fast enough, I know this is an LBP thing. My thoughts were to make him shoot upwards then a spike falls somewhere from above at a pace slow enough to dodge. This would be altering the game play a lot though so probably not a solution. Just making his shots have more of a pattern might help.

Natural stops is another thing I think needs introduction, there is so many chances to die, often just running ahead causes death unexpectedly. Maybe curve the path upward just before gas or add a stone, something to stop people running straight into it.

The first speech bubble on the last character skipped straight away so I couldn't read it, not sure why that was.

At times I felt it was a little too dark, but my blind was up a little and sun was shining through which inevitably altered my perception of light and dark so that factored in. Plus my monitor is a little darker than normal tvs would be outputting but still, I think there was moments it could have been brightened up, specifically in the fist parts. This is probably a design choice though so not sure if that's something you would want to change.

If you wouldn't mind checking out my level ' Malevolence unfolds in The Gardens' I'd really appreciate it.

Played it last night, here's my verdict:

-Visuals were really good!
-Gameplay was nice and not too complex.
-Checkpoints were placed at good spots.
-At some points, it was a bit tricky but still fair

Overall a cute fantasy level, and for the Nightmare part, well, it was intriguing too.
:star::star::star::star: almost 5 but at least, I hearted it

I think that for the most part I would replace all of them but I remember specifically the mushroom area and the place where there is enemies in Ze Artist's house.

I also had a problem with the first speech bubble from Ze Artist like OneEyedBanshee but forgot to mention it.

Hi! Played your level last nite so I apologize it this is scram-jumbled but my notes were made with a purple wax crayon-- and hey that reminds me... You really do feature purple in Ze Artiste's world. I loved all the Purple platforming at the end... Some really fine characters to boot! The artist himself evoked a feeling of 'Corpse bride' in me and that cant be a bad thing now can it?

Unfortunately his prox switch is so small that I missed first speech balloon. Ok, lets start at the begining--I personally am not a big fan of elastic in my platforming, seems to introduce alot of uncalculatable variables... Yours weren't too bad.

The TREE. Whats up with the tree? I guess it magically sprouts... but if your on the ground the camera cant see... and twice when I tried to follow it up The UPward movement crushed me into the 'V' of branches. I'd address it how you'd like.

Your bosses are great! The dialogue made me stop and take note... nice running gag. Good battles! thought the mechanics a little cumbersome but very unique! One note:

There are a lot of deaths here... In fact, your battles (and this level) enforce the wrong message. This level taught me it's okay to sacrifice lives because what I am presented with at times, is so impossible-- it's just easier to die in trial after error to proceed. The player then become numb to it... (seriously my hands were FF'd numb) I am sure that's not what you want to inspire in your audience...

Your Music cues and choice, I really thought were top-notch. The visuals were very good. There's a tipping mushroom/plane shift that'd I suggest tweaking... and I didn't feel accomplishment as much as relief... when I finally got through those columns. (Gravel shudders recalling last nights' nightmares!)

I would definitely install an invisible layer that prevented the player from plane shifting to the back layer on the second boss inadvertently... it was a little maddening.

A few tweaks and it's cool levels for you... a long journey with a wealth of varied enviorns demonstrating your wealth of talents.

It is no way required but if you are interested, you could have a go at my The MUPPET Level. https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=24744-The-MUPPET-Level

Ok, well since I haven't checked this all day and there are a bunch of replies, I'll just respond to all of them in one post
First of all, thank you all so much for playing my level and I am really overjoyed to hear you all liked it

Alrighty then, obviously the thin mushrooms are an issue... I'll fix them ASAP.
I just might change up the first boss a little bit in terms of gameplay to make him a little bit less frustrating and fair.
(Thank you OneEyedBanshee - that would be a good idea, but it may take a lot of work - which means more fun for me because I wanted to change him anyways and I just love creating in the first place )
And I will make minor adjustments to the second boss's area - especially directly after you defeat him, so that you don't accidentally run into the gas.
I will change the checkpoints at the beginning of the swamp and right before the moving platforms in Ze Artist's house to infinite ones (Thank you Shebhnt for pointing those out to me).
I'll tighten the spring on one of the mushrooms just a tiny bit, not so much that it's too easy (Thanks to Gravel for bringing that to my attention).
I will adjust the moving platforms in Ze Artist's house so they stay put longer, just a bit easier.
I just might adjust the swinging columns in the beginning of his house, so that they aren't so hard as I even have trouble with that myself (No more nightmares Gravel )

Okay then, that about sums up the editing work I have ahead of myself...

Thanks alot for the help everyone
I'll get to your levels as soon as I have time, but it may be as late as next week I'm pretty busy this week with a bunch of school/random things I have to do.

And thanks Memodrix for the video and the quick response too

PS: Is it possible that someone play this in multiplayer please? There are a few 2 player parts and I'd like to see if maybe some bugs would come about with more than one player...

PPS: The part with the tree was just supposed to be weird and funny lol. The mouse turns into the tree basically

Hi, I played you level this morning. I think the level is cool, great atmosphere and visuals. My favorite thing are the mini bosses. They are well balanced and original. Overall, 5 starts. Now, going little bit more into detail:

GOOD:
-the atmosphere
- bosses and enemies are nice, and with the exact difficulty
- not too hard neither too easy

THINGS I'D MODIFY
- as they said before, there are areas too hard. For example, inside the house, the moving platforms was too hard. I died several times and got little bit frustrated
- the thin mushrooms are confusing. In this area you could do great things with the 3D layer glitch
- some magic mouths are too fast. I had no time to read (try to think in the non-English speakers). In particular, in the second boss I had to clue about what I had to do

In general I think the level is cool. Looking forward for the rest of the series .

Could you take a look at my level F4F? It's in my signature.

BTW, how did you record the level? It's really nice to have a video showing the level

I've been pretty busy lately, so I haven't been able to make the suggested changes yet, but I'll do that as soon as I can.
I'm sorry, I didn't even take non-english readers into account  I'll make some of the speech parts slower.
I'm really glad everyone is looking forward to the next part of the series
I've been trying to work on Ze Artist's Puzzle House, but I haven't been able to put the amount of time I wanted to into it yet.

I'll try out your level when I can, sorry, but it might be a couple of days waiting

and as for the video, I asked this guy (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=22814-Video-Capture-Celebrating-10-vids!!)
Just follow that link and reply to his thread requesting him to record a level for you.

I went in this thread to say that it sounds really cool, then I remembered I played this with Morgana a while ago. It was a fun level, though I'll play it again tonight to refresh my memory.2010-04-25 22:14:00

Okay, I just played this, again, and yes, it is really good. The atmosphere is great, the story is really creative and is really cool, and the sounds were awesome. Seriously, the sound effects here were really smart. It kind of reminds me of American McGee's Alice or whatever it was called. You crammed a lot of variety into this level and I really liked it. The one thing I didn't like was the first boss, though. I died a bazillion times, though the second one was really creative. I still don't understand why grabbing mushrooms a bunch of times makes the gas go away, though. The sticker work in here was great too.

One of my nit-picks though is that at some parts it can be a little confusing on where to jump, specifically after the second boss. A couple times I thought the thin, mushroom decorations in the foreground were platforms, and it's very easy to just walk into the horrible gas on draw-bridge thing right after the second boss.

Overall, I thought this was a cool level. It's a shame it's gotten so little plays. I gave it 5 stars, a beautiful tag, and a heart. Good work!

If you would, could you check out my Secrets of the Sky level? I've gotten plenty of feedback on Syrup City, thought not many people have checked out Secerts of the Sky.

And you compared it to American McGee's Alice! Why thank you!
I've been working on an update, which will (hopefully) make the first boss fun and clear up any confusion as to where to jump in the mushroom swamp, so that should fix any nitpicks people have been finding in the level
Thanks for the feedback and the rating
Your level "Secrets of the Sky" looks very interesting, I'll play it tomorrow!

PS: Grabbing the mushrooms makes the gas go away because I said so
