What do you do when creating?

Archive: 35 posts

So, my question to you.
What do you do while/before creating?

I listen to music and try to draw what i am going to make!

I usually go into a deep, mediative trance, ignoring everything and just focusing on the aspect of the level...

Either that or I just fall asleep at the controller.

i take a break every now and again, go into a blank level and wizz around on my super fast car (which uses no rockets for propulsion may i add). it's kinda satisfying to plow it into the side of a block of dark matter.2010-04-10 20:56:00

One thing I like to do, and its kinda silly, is imagine a made up film. I go through all the things that are in the made up movie, and from that, i "base" my level off of that. Its weird, but it works.2010-04-14 01:34:00

I completely visualize my level. I day dream of it. Then while I'm creating, I may change things here and there.2010-04-14 03:09:00

well what I do is start thinking of obstacles and puzzles then create a small room to put it. That's how my current level is kinda being made. I also think about adding secrets and multiple paths....2010-04-14 06:40:00

Before, I uually play some levels for inspiration. Then I start creating the actual level. If I get too bored I invite some friends over to help with visuals and logic. It's a pretty good way of creating, but I find it goes reaaaallllllyyyy ssloooooowwwwllllllyyyy.

E.g. I was working on the next Alice level for about 2 hours last night then Joey and Lady_Luck joined and we built random animals. At the end of the day I had hardly done anything.

When I got ideas and I'm not in LBP at the moment, I write/draw my ideas on any piece of paper. When I'm in create mode I listen to music, which fits to my level theme. It somehow makes much more fun with some great music, which fits to the level theme.2010-04-15 13:03:00

I always make objects of interest first, its a good way to ease into the theme and feel, makes the rest of the level a lot smoother2010-04-16 01:03:00

Hehe, he never said the name of it though.

Anyways, I try to procrastinate when making levels so I can take my time.

Drug-related references (even vague ones) are prohibited on the forum and I would ask that you please avoid making them. Thanks!2010-04-16 02:52:00

Ummm.. Here's my list, sad as it may seem:
1) Think of an idea somewhere. One that just pops into my head.
2) Go to create mode, start production.
3) Create "Ideas and Projects" thread.
4) Run out of ideas.
5) Play some community levels while listening to some music.
6) Pop in MW2
7) Play MW2 for an hour or so.
8) Realize I'm off task and getting nowhere in LBP.
9) Put LBP in and go into create.
10) Get nowhere in twenty minutes, repeat steps 4-9
11) Decide to give up because I finally realize I'm hopeless.
12) Delete thread.
13) Wallow in self-pity
14) Repeat steps 1-14

If you haven't noticed yet, it's a never ending cycle of patheticness...

i try not to play levels when i'm actually in create-headspace. At best it's distracting, 'cause they're awesome; at worst they're discouraging, 'cause they're extremely awesome.

i do lots of sketching in a little notebook, not all of it for LPB, but it does help me to see how i need to put together simple logic for my levels...the whole logic thing does not come intuitively to me.

While creating, usually listening to something heavy and crunchy, Tool, or early Manson seem to do it for me. If there's something i really need to concentrate on, low-key music, like the soundtrack to Tekkon Kinkreet, work wonders.

i used to do a lot of cursing whilst creating, but i don't glue anything anymore, so there's not a lot of cause anymore.

If you want music that's not too intrusive, depending on taste, the soundtrack from Paranoia Agent, or Ghosts I-IV from Nine Inch Nails (which is strangely two CDs instead of four), might go a long way. Both of those are a little down-beat, but they make for good thinking atmosphere...at least for me.

This sounds strange but first I draw the level then I go into a creating mode in my head and I start creating everything that i drew without looking at the paper lol 2010-04-16 13:02:00

Yep! Except it's really counterproductive because all MW2 does is wipe your brain of any knowledge it has. All the mindless killing and shooting.... Lol

I think of a character and a level branches off from it. Then In watch my dad play Mass Effect 2 in the morning.
I also base some ideas off other video games, and some things come to me by looking at cheese for a few minutes.
But hitting your head on the wall sounds good too.

Drug-use warning.
If mods think this goes to far, you can delete it without any hard feelings

I will be honest here,
me (and i know some fellow editor-people on this forum) often roll/twist a sigarette with wacky tabbacy.
A few others like to drink beer and/or whiskey while editing.
But then again, we are all somewhat older/grumpier

Dont abuse/overuse aclohol drugs, they are bad for you.
I am not saying its a good thing, using drugs.. but its the truth.
Im a stoner, weed is legal over here. nuff said.
