Copyable/Observable?

Archive: 22 posts

We all know that there is the option for your published level to either be copyable or not. Also, there is that dilemma you face with making a level copyable. You think, "Hey, it might be nice for people to see how I did this one thing," but then in the back of your mind know that someone will publish it as their own. For most, the concern outweighs the desire to share your level.

What if, though, there was a happy medium?

What if there was a third option, which I shall call Observable? This mode would allow a person to copy your level to their moon, but upon entering create mode his or her popit would not have access to the materials or tools bags. Finally, the level would not be publishable if copied as Observable.

It has been suggested before that copyable levels not be allowed to be publishable, but there would be nothing to stop the person from copying the whole thing into a new level. In addition, people can save their favorite levels to their moon, to be played even when offline (reminiscent of the psp version).

Thoughts?

They should have access to everything but the capture object tool. This way players can experiment with switches and logic by moving things around and what-not.

I like all these ideas, especially the part of saving levels to simply play them.

Thanks.

I'd imagine that they'd still be able to move/tweak/copy/delete stuff with their popit cursor. As long as they are able to only move and copy stuff around, I'd imagine that they'd still be able to save the level.

with 70% of levels being generic bomb/shark/race/ramp survival nonsense that is usually the same thing just copied, I am deeply disappointed Media Molecule never thought of this after the 1,000,000 created levels mark. Your idea is a brilliant way to handle it and I'd love the possibility of saving levels.2010-04-10 19:35:00

How about, they can access the tweak menu, but not alter the settings, so they know what settings a piston is on?2010-04-10 22:12:00

I completely agree this would be a very nice medium. I see absolutely no benefit to making something copyable other than if it is a template for something or a tool of some sort. Allowing users to just take a look at the inner workings would help them greatly if they are curious enough. If users just copy something and pop it in their level not much would happen in the way of learning, observing and then trying to recreate something would improve their skills and understanding of how people create more complex things and then in turn hopefully lead on to them creating their own complex thing. I'd also like to see a similar setting in OC. Limiting users to just observing, of course with an option to allow them to be more involved.2010-04-11 00:04:00

This may not work with everyone's levels, but one thing I though of is that maybe you could give the player a jet pack or something, so they can fly around and see how it works, but it is very limited compared to create mode.2010-04-11 00:07:00

Great idea, If they had this option in game, all my levels would be observable, and I bet many more will be too.2010-04-11 00:13:00

Your levels?Ha.All of the levels you have are copied.I hope many more levels will be observable so you don't go and copy them.

Aren't you the person who's been spamming the Cool Levels page with copied levels?

Excellent idea.
I know I would love to snoop around in your levels...

Perhaps an option when publishing to have an "Observation" setting.
This would give people a "read only" hover mode access to the level, sans the capture option.

Well, if copyable, there should be an option for the original creator to set whether it can be published or not, but for it to also state the original creator's name.

For example, template levels made by people would be pretty useless if you couldn't re-publish it too...

But I really love the idea of an Observable option!!

I think the observable option is a great idea. However, I could see where you could choose the observable option just like where you choose to play the level online or play on your own, having this as just another play option. I would like this better than copying the level to your moon, especially since you won't have any change options anyway.2010-06-29 22:40:00

Agreed.
I want to play your All Mine level a lot.. but then you might delete it- so this would be useful for playing levels that have been deleted, no?
