Malevolence unfolds in The GardensOneEyedBanshee
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/Almwitch05/APhoto_6.jpgYou decide it's a nice day for a walk but don't realise that it's the day a dark plan will begin to unfold, shaking all of Little Big Planet to its core.
Hello! This is my entry for the community contest "The Mm Themed Mini-Level Contest: The Gardens" set up by Piggabling. I had a lot of fun making it and hope you enjoy playing it if you decide to do so. Here's some screen shots taken in create mode. It's short but sweet I like to think.

The King and Queen have been 'tranced' into becoming the new faces of evil in Little Big Planet. Of course someone else is behind it all.. In this first chapter you discover the damage that they can cause with a mysterious flying device and it's this that inspires you to go on a a new quest. You have to find out exactly what is going on and stop this evil from taking over all of Little Big Planet, and obviously save the King and Queen in the process!

Hopefully it doesn't break any rules

Feedback greatly appreciated so I can make it the best it can be.

I'd rate it as very easy, it is gardens after all

Just noticed typo in title!

It's 'Malevolence unfolds in The gardens' Anyone know how to edit title?! I'll search now though agh!
Edit: Figured out how to edit it myself, whew!

Thanks!

Well I'm sure most people that are going to play this have played by now. I recorded a play through of it for anyone that just wants to take a look at it in action, it is a short level so a trailer would be really short! So this is the whole thing. Story wise doesn't really kick in until halfway so if you don't want spoilage turn it off and go play!

Ok thanks?.. lol. There's a bug at the end that was fairly rare in create mode and then testing in play. But since publishing it has happened to me both times i played argh. So I'm tweaking things but no guarantee it's perfectly working so if you find the racer gets stuck when he chases you let me know.

Wow I played again and it happened! What the? This is so frustrating becuase the fix involves having to move so much crap so I can emit something back in the right place, ugh.

Edit: Think it's fixed now thankfully.

Hey, just played it. It was very good. I really liked how you used all the different parts of gardens. I thought the platforming was great. I thought it wasn't too difficult but still had enough of a challenge to feel rewarding. I really like the evil king and queen. I thought they were done very well. Also, the evil racer was very cool.

My one concern is that after you get chased, I don't know if the scoreboard is suppose to come down right away. I ended up walking around, I even went all the way back to the start looking for it. I eventually climbed back up to find it but I think that there needs to be some way to indicate where it is because I was very confused after it was over.

Overall it was very good, I gave it five stars. When you get a chance can you check out my Retro Retribution level? (link in my sig)

Shebhnt thanks for the feedback, sure I'll check your level out later. I know what you mean about the scoreboard, if you read all the text and then skip it would seem to take longer. Waiting for the text box to disappear itself would result in it appearing faster or so it would seem (at least I'm thinking you pressed circle after reading). I guess I am being very generous time wise in case someone reads very slow, but tweaking the timing shouldn't be hard, I will go to that when I start up LBP in a few minutes. Thanks! I also think I will add invisible boundaries or something because I really don't want someone wandering all the way around the place!

Thanks Oddmania!

I had a few plans to my Fantastical adventure and one that I scrapped was this story idea! I couldn't get it to straighten out in the long Run...
Anyway: I look forward to playing!

Lol well it's taken pretty much from a game called Toonstruck but twisted for LBP. I like how it came out but making a full length level with everything would be a better way of expanding it. I really enjoyed it and had a real laugh when I had someone else in OC with me and we were chatting about the possible storyline. They seriously did not want the King and Queen to die so I had them die just to wind them up but they wound up coming back as cyborgs! Alas I think it would be much more LBP if they came back in one piece.

Hope you enjoy playing.

Played your level this afternoon. I liked it.

-Good catchy title.
-The visuals were nice (I especially liked the grass you created, looked good).
-Gameplay was easy but fun. You used the vertical area well. I liked the hidden area with scorebubbles.
-The transformation of the level was a nice suprise. Well executed and funny.

Two small things:
-There was an invisible wall on one of the rocks in the beginning. It looks like you can jump on & over it, but you are held back on top. Perhaps you can make the rock a little higher, so you don't notice the invisible wall.
-Also, I managed to kill myself in the mushroom-area (slipped between the mushgrooms and squashed).

All in all: cool little level that demands a sequel!

If you have the time for F4F it would be great if you could take a look at one of my levels.

Heh thanks for the feedback! I will look into making the rock taller if I can find it, perhaps it's the one just above the windmill? I really am not a fan of that mushroom area so it might just get a little face lift. I'll check out one of your levels in a while for sure.2010-04-11 21:37:00

Ya know whats funny... I see you just posted in my thread...

Well I played yours first, last night so I win! Ha Ha!

Not gonna hit you with any feedback... 5 stars and hearted... Pick a tag! Brilliant, Ingenious, Inspired, Artistic, Boss! What a great amount of planning and detail went into this level... really well planned-out!

You created one of my favourite ALL-TIME cut-scene story telling sequences!

Inspired brilliance! Platforming was tough but never difficult-- which is difficult to do! I am very impressed. Unfortunately as soon as the story starts, the level is over...

So there you have it, my only complaint is wanting more...

Gravel thanks for that, really made my day! I appreciate the kind words really. It is for a mini level contest but I have to admit after getting through it I wanted more myself A sequel is on the cards definitely. I really want to expand on it but with a whole level to play it out. You know the King and Queen want more destruction so I think I have to let them have it! I would really like to do a level on each theme and have the machine zap maybe even an entire area. I am playing with the idea of taking a level, sketching it out in it's entirety and then making an evil version of it. I'll see though, a few other things I want to make first, don't know if I can hold out that long though!2010-04-12 19:37:00

Played it an hour ago. :kz:
Good:
-Nice visuals
-Looks and feels like the Gardens
-Non-linear
Bad:
-The length didn't satisfy me. I wanted more!
-Some arrows pointing where to go might be nice, so I can go the opposite direction!

Overall, It's a nice level, like something MM would make.

Thanks for the comments Jazve. I will look into adding some arrows, that would make it really MM! I get the length issue but there's nothing I could do about it, I will make a sequel for sure and hopefully satisfy the general hunger for more 2010-04-13 04:19:00

I think this is another strike by OneEyedBanshee! It looks really good! I'm intruiged to play the level. Few days ago I also made a the Gardens themed-level for the PSP. I don't know if you've got the PSP version, but to return feedback you could play that. I would like you to try my level called: Dragon Ball - First Book. (on the PS3) And post feedback on my thread.

PROS

I think you captured the spirit of the gardens theme perfectly here! The visuals aren't particularly complex but they work really well and has that Mm feeling to it. I loved the design of the two types of grass you used. The use of stickers in the level was great, especially on the spaceship. I don't usually like it when people use Mm made objects, but it seems right to include them in the level. The Evil King & Queen were great, and looked sufficiently different from the original designs. I liked how you used the stickers from the monster pack to replace the crowd object. The point bubbles in the level were spaced out nicely which i sometimes find tricky!

There was no lack of gameplay, with virtually no areas where you're just running in a straight line. The mini puzzle at the start was great where you have to wait for the branch to come down so u can get under the bridge. I also liked that custom made switch at the top.

CONS

"Malevolence" was a little on the short side. I'm not sure there was enough there that could've filled the thermometer, but probably wrong though!

The scoreboard seemed to appear in an odd place. (struggling to think of bad things here! xD)

The bird that you can grab to the left of 2 mushrooms got stuck, and I ended up falling back down so I had to restart. A close level gate would be handy too because areas like the water mill can be tricky with more than one person due to the camera.

OVERALL

A great level with a good balance between visuals and gameplay that has that Mm feeling.

:star::star::star::star: Hearted the level and you as an author! Thanks again for playing mine!

Hi, I played the level. I found it funny, ovearall :star::star::star::star:.

Good things:
- nice visuals
- nice ambientation
- funny
- good gameplay
- great characters

Things that could be improved:
- you feel you are playing yet another Mm level. This can be good... or can be seen as a lack of originality. In general is not bad idea, but not sure whether is a good idea do create more levels in this path
- the level is little bit short. Did you fill the thermometer?
- you could consider adding some puzzle besides the excelent gameplay

Ovearll I enjoyed the level. Nice work. Since you are doing F4F, would you like to take a look and give me your opinion abut my last level, "The tank factory"?

It's short because it is an entry for piggablings mini level contest (garden theme, hence the mm style. I also feel the gardens isn't puzzle heavy, it's leisurely platforming so that's all I wanted in this level), I had limited space folks! There is thermo left but I have no use for it really, I wanted to add more but it felt too cramped then when I messed around. I wouldn't mind doing a sequel but I was just doing an intro here, the next one would be completely corrupted.

Rhys I usually forget about the close level gate, must have slipped my mind here. Not that I'm a fan of how it looks I'll try squeeze it in somewhere hidden. Good find on the bird, not sure how to fix it off the top of my head but I'll go have a look and see what I can do, not good having to restart, even though it is short! XD And really, is the scoreboard an issue?! lol

Onturenio I appreciate your opinion but the visuals are like that only becuase of the contest, normally I don't go near MM stuff, I just felt this would be something different and fun compared to other more original time consuming stuff I've worked on. I don't plan on making a habit of this but certainly I would like to follow it up with something. And yes I will give your level a shot in a few minutes and let you know what I think!

Haha. Okay, you shouldn't buy it then. It breaks easily, and you can't really have advanced logic. Edit mode is really annoying to use. But I like the community though. It's small, but very helpful.

I've played your level now. It was very humoristic. Especially the end.. Very funny. It was great that you had all the Gardens characters in it. And they all changed to evil. Really funny. The look of the level was decent too, and you've really catched the essence of the Gardens.

I rated it 5 stars for being humoristic and giving a good experience. The only thing I could point out it that, not everyone have got english as there first language, so some of the cut-scenes could be slowed down. I missed some of the parts.. Unfortunately I just have to play the level again to get in everything.

Looked great so I had to play it!
As usual I'll note stuff as I play then summarise.

-Looks great where you first start. I had to get that stash of bubbles up to the left, while attempting to get them, I fell in the water (more point bubbles yay), I thought I was stuck until I saw the rock in the back layer so I could get out. Well done.
I dont know why but there is a small grass ledge in the middle layer (right of the windmill) that you can't see and hampers the player a little. Oh. I see why it's there now, haha. Didn't expect those thin layers to move, nice! I don't know if you need the ledge to the right when there is one of the left, but that's up to you.
- Up top, nice switch.
-Humpty Dumpty's magic mouth blocks the view of his face.
- The plank of wood stopping the wheel. Why did it dissolve after I pulled it?
- Ok the king and queen entrance was a bit random, but nice cutscenes. Spaceship looked 3D. :o
- Humpty's "ARRGGHH...somethingsomething" MM went by too quick. Maybe I was running too fast. Because I missed that, I didn't get to see his face.
- Little Xim looks AWESOME! You should totally give him away as a prize!

Aww, the end.

The thing I most liked about this level is that had tons of gameplay, by that I dont mean a ton of switches. Even if it was just going to A-B there are all these great angles that test your jumping skills.
This level brought a little lighthearted fun from LBP which I have missed.
And by looking at the thread images again, it looks like I missed the bird/bat transformation. Replayed it, I see that guy is optional and a little out of the way.
Loved the stickering and visuals too. I know this is just a mini level, I would love to see a sequel!
Trifecta on this one, 5 stars, level heart, author heart.

I'll look into Dumpty too, you mean the text box and not the actual mouth right?
Yes, correct.

Thanks midnight heist! I have to play my level and read your review in the process I think to fully get what you mean. The waterwheel plank dissolves because originally it was sponge and could get caught and pushed back into the waterwheel thus blocking it from working and the way I have the logic setup the wheel has to rotate a bit to trigger some mag switches. I will look into keeping it from dissolving though, maybe as dissolve it will delete itself if it gets caught since that's the lightest of the materials. Maybe I will add a speech after the transformation of bird just before that area when you take the other two birds up. I notice lots of people run straight past that! I'll look into Dumpty too, you mean the text box and not the actual mouth right? I'll see what I can do there and yeah I think you have to stay in a certain area to see Dumptys second mouth. I'll be sure to check your level out tomorrow when I'm on LBP! Thanks again for the review it made me laugh and also raises a few interesting and often overlooked issues. 2010-04-16 05:17:00

brilliant work! really fantastic!

this level feels just like the gardens (expanded, of course, and a lot more depth) until the scary king and queen turn everything evil. the change from good to evil was really well done. i was actually quite upset when dumpty was shattered. anyway, great work! i can't flaw it, which is a good thing . and congrats on being spotlighted too!

could you do a little bit of F4F on my level Dimension Warp? there's a link to its page in my sig. i'd appreciate it!

... Wow...
(trembles in awe) it was amazing...
By the way, when you see the cutscene with the King and Queen in their ufo ship or something, look to the King's side, you'll get a surprise...
For those who are too lazy to try and find out, here's a little hint :
Hey, there's someone made of cardboard... looks like he came from the snowy Wilderness

Wow! This level was simply awe-inspiring

I couldn't find anything about it I didn't like (except the length, of course )
Really, the visuals were soooo beautiful and definitely reminiscent of the Gardens and the switch over to bad was awesome!
The gameplay was simple, but really fun.
The story was a great twist on the Garden theme and I thought it was very interesting
I would love to see a level series on this (as I'm sure everyone else who posted here would ) and I wanted to play MORE lol

I loved this level and I'm sure you'll win the contest

I played this earlier, and I'm really impressed! This level is waaayyy cooler than The Gardens. The visuals were amazing, you even had the flower rocking back and forward. The story was pretty cool too, it was un-expected, and unique. The gameplay was also very good, and the level flowed through perfectly. The machine that the king and the queen were in was really good too. Overall, this was a great level, good luck with the contest.

Obviously the main aspect of this level was the visuals, and they were top notch! You managed to capture the feel of the Gardens brilliantly while giving it your own personal twist. Interesting story and good solid platforming. Changing the scenery was quite impressive!
