Need help creating balloon-like effect

Archive: 6 posts

So for my level I have been trying to create an area in which there are a bunch of flowers floating upwards that sackboy can grab on and be pulled upwards towards a higher platform. However, I also want sackboy to weigh it down so that he doesn't fly up forever. I plan to have the flowers come from several emmiters below.

Of course, my first thought was to simply attach a balloon to a sponge by a really long string. However I found that sackboy far outweighed the balloon and would plummet down much too fast. But if I made the balloon much bigger then the sponge would go whizzing by too fast as well. I'm looking for a slow ascent and slow descent.

My next thought was to use pink floaty, but initially I had the same problems as with the balloons. Then I realized that part of the problem was that sackboy's weight was such a large percentage compared to the sponge+floaty, that he was having too drastic of an effect. So I made the floaty really large and then embedded some metal, so that it would still float up rather slowly, but when sackboy jumped and grabbed on his weight would have a much smaller effect and he would be pulled up by the initial velocity, but would eventually slow it and begin to fall.

This was exactly what I was looking for, but I had a new problem. Because I had to make the floaty so big, if I had more then a few flowers close to each other, the floatys up top would bump into each other altering your movement. So... any thoughts on how I might be able to get around this, or use a different mechanism to get the same effect?

you could use invisible winches

I thought about it, and tinkered with it for a bit, but decided against winches for a few reasons. First, I want to have a steady stream of these floating up which I'm not sure I could accomplish without just emitting/demitting the object. But also, I would need to use a more complex set of logic then is worth the effort in order to create the "floating" effect I'm looking for.

You could use your first idea and just use winches and DM to regulate the up speed. still using emitters. just adding winch and dark matter to the object.2010-04-09 20:22:00

You could use the overlap glitch (either by using the dark matter/emitter method (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/entry.php?1041-Emitter-Blocking-Theory), or the compression tool (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=24434-Merging-Objects-or-Materials-aka-Compression-Tool)) to make your floaty and metal extra dense. Then you could make them much smaller and still get the same effect as with the big one.2010-04-10 07:07:00

Although I had never heard of that, it sounds like a perfect workaround. I'll give that a try tomorrow when I have some time to experiment.
