[Bug] incredibles pack light / gassed

Archive: 17 posts

Aya pointed out to me yesterday that the light object from the incredibles pack has a significantly wider beam than the spotlight, which could make for interesting ambient lighting, however, I've just come across a couple of bugs with gassifying it.

It still has mass. It is affected by gravity and so will fall when you unpause the level, unlike normal gassed objects.
It still has physical presence. At least the circular bracket part does. other objects cannot pass through it as it's physical presence will collide.
It also cannot be ungassified
It cannot be ungassed - probably the most important one, as you cannot tweak the light settings without ungassing, and so you won't be able to tweak this object

It seems that light object is made out of a checkpoint thickness piece of material for the circular bracket and a thick layer piece for the lampshade (note, the lampshade is NOT golfball thickness, as you might expect by looking at it, but is fully thick and overlaps with the bracket).

It is the bracket that is still affected by normal physics (has weight and collides), so if there is a way to separate the two, then that could be used to overcome this I guess. Because of this, the gassed lamp can still pass through checkpoint thickness material.

I've not done too much testing / investigation into this, I just thought I'd bring it to your attention, before anyone gets stung by this

Edit - sehven's solution:

You can crush the backplate by setting it on a theck layer object and then bringing another heavy theck layer object down on top of it. As far as I can tell, there's no way to crush the lamp and keep the backplate, but even if you could, it'd be invisible, so there's really no point. You can also crush it after gassing the lamp, which will leave you with a fully gassified lamp.

Interesting. I haven't even had a chance to play with the new stuffs yet, and you've already broken the Matrix, Neo. Kudos on that.2010-04-09 14:06:00

It never occurred to me that you could turn a spotlight to gas and it would still be a light source...this will be very useful! Doh!2010-04-09 14:30:00

When I made the gallery level I also noticed something about that drill. Not necessarily a bug but I stuck a square of dark matter behind it about halfway up the spiral to hold it up in the air yet it still spins !2010-04-09 14:37:00

I noticed if you stick the decoration (forgotten the name, it's red) on the flat bit at the top of the drill it goes really wide... I think this may be a very buggy pack...2010-04-09 14:57:00

So does this mean that decorations will rotate around the z axis if placed on the drill?

Yup.. we made quite a funny spinning monster of sorts out of it last night while messing around in create.

On topic.. I'm wondering how it is on thermo being a 3d object? While I would like the wider spot, if it is more expensive it could be a deal breaker in some uses unless you could get to just the light itself.

Yeah it works great on the drill. I've also seen this done by placing decorations on the paintinator, the jetpack, and other item enhancements to allow them to rotate in the z axis. You could get the same effect by hiding one of those underneath the drill, and it probably wouldn't be as buggy

Makes sense, the drill doesn't physically move as it rotates, it's just a visual thing.

I think what you are seeing is actually quite a common interaction between mesh objects and decorations. I get similar things with story mode objects. I don't think there is any cause to call this a particularly buggy pack

Not meaning to be rude, but I split this off from general discussion of the incredibles pack in order to highlight a specific bug that might actually cause people issues in their level creation. I'd rather this wasn't just random observations of things that exist in the pack

Yes! and it sells the look completely... covered it in feathers (way cool) and now I can't wait to use it underwater...

edit: erm... sorry rtm... noted.

Yeah, I've used decorations on the remove enhancement object to create a creature with invisible dissolve underneath so it can be shot.

Back on topic: does the drill turn automatically (without attaching anything) ?

Haha. Guys, this is not even close to being back on topic. To remind you, this was the topic:

Interesting. I still haven't got to mess about with the incredibles stuff yet.
See how this light looks.

I'll have another play with this later. Can you not just gas both 'pieces' of it?

Edit: Apparently not. This is indeed kinda weird.

It cannot be ungassed - probably the most important one, as you cannot tweak the light settings without ungassing, and so you won't be able to tweak this object

I already noticed this, but I assumed that as long as you tweak it correctly before you gas it, then it's no big deal.

Makes sense, the drill doesn't physically move as it rotates, it's just a visual thing.

I tried explaining this before (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=24581-Absolutely-Incredible-News!&p=435529#post435529), but maybe I didn't do it very well.

From a gameplay POV, the only difference between the new drill, and, say, the powerup remover, is that one is a hazard object, and the other is etherial. When you want Z-axis decoration rotation, just pick whichever of the two best suits your needs.

I'd rather this wasn't just random observations of things that exist in the pack

If you didn't think that was going to happen, then you must be very new to these forums.

Sorry I'm two weeks late with this, but I never really hang out in the "everything else" section.

The backplate is indeed checkpoint thick (theck) and the lamp is thick. You can crush the backplate by setting it on a theck layer object and then bringing another heavy theck layer object down on top of it. As far as I can tell, there's no way to crush the lamp and keep the backplate, but even if you could, it'd be invisible, so there's really no point.
