A fun platformer based on a Ratchet & Clank Up Your Arsenal vid-comic.

I have worked hard on this one, and I am curious to hear your thoughts on all elements.

That level definitely looks like a Ratchet and Clank world [and it even looks like Deja Q level from the 3rd installment too]. This looks promising. I'll check it out the next time I play LBP. Hope it goes well.2010-04-08 18:56:00

I played this level a few hours ago and it is exactly like the vid-comics level in "Ratchet and Clank Up Your Arsenal". It is definitely an one layer level and really feels like you're playing as Captain Qwark. The paintinator you designed with the decorations in this level really looks like one of the weapons from the Ratchet and Clank games and the Dr. Nefarious character design looks funny. The only flaw in this level is that it needs more camera zooms and the collapsing platform you safely landed after you hanged on to the rope needs to be more balanced. Awesome level.

That reminds me, I feel like playing "Ratchet and Clank Future A Crack In Time" again but this time in Challenge mode.

Thanks for the feebback (i'll check out your level asap).
I added more camera zoom outs (spanning entire Q block/cog section), and it plays and looks so much better, thank you. I added some extra cogs and visual tweaks because you now see more of the screen.
I thought people might have some trouble with that certain collapsing platform. I added a tiny but of invisible dark matter to wedge the platform to tilt up to the right angle so it is way easier to make the jump. It will be better for multiple players as well.
As for the paintinator, why dont more people do this?! I think it looks awesome, haha. I wish the decorations appeared on sackboy's gun also though.
Glad you enjoyed it.

this level is fantastic! i'm a big fan of Ratchet and Clank and this level really captured the feel of the Deja Q vid-comics. the scenery was brilliant and it looked just like the metropolis. i noticed the outside looks like it's moving out side a window which looked really effective. the Quark-style comment about the taxi was great. i thought that this concept was perfect for the one layer competition and you pulled it off well. 5 stars and a heartie from me!

if you have time, could you check out my level Dimension Warp and leave some F4F? i'd greatly appreciate it. thanks!

I checked this level out last night and here are my thoughts.

The level was beautiful and you really did feel like you were in the captain quirk video game. I liked that a lot. However, I eventually got incredibly frustrated with the level because of how "cheap" it was. The level was incredibly difficult, but I felt like it was a "cheap" difficulty rather than actual difficult difficulty. Truth be told at one point (probably 3/4 through the level as I had been playing it for a while) I just put it down because I was that frustrated. On that same note, once I got past some of the cheaper parts I had hoped I was done with them, but it quickly became repetitive as you kept bringing the same enemies back up. It's a great concept, but it was just too frustrating for me.

Well, I'm not the biggest Ratchet & Clank fan out there... but I am a fan of brightly coloured beautiful worlds... and this is it kids! It is so engrossing in information overload that I just now reading this--realized the level exists only on one layer... brilliant, I'm a fan of that!
Some solid platforming skills and timing for the unsolid timed platforms will be required to complete. Now while I may not be the best test of difficulty (understatement) I can not begin to think of how many 2, 3, 4, sack groups you are gonna make happy by just blasting everything that moves to bits! I had a butt-load of fun visiting this metropolis and plan to return again...

At this time I have no recommendations as my retinas are at just this moment being reattached... I need time to convalesce and recuperate.

This is what I want to hear. I dont find this level difficult at all, but that's because I made it.
What parts did you feel were "cheap"? The fire bugs? Or the spinny sub bosses?
I have placed explosion stickers where the bugs land to help the player. Perhaps I need to change it to something less subtle? I also had highlighted the paths of the bugs with thin glass at one stage, but it looked too jarring for me.
As I hate cheap deaths and would like to address this asap.

Left some feedback on your level too.

It sure is bright. Yellow in your face!
*understatement of the century*
"blasting everything that moves to bits" is what R&C is known for. I might add some new objects, just so players can blow them up.

Hello, F4F time.

I love the lettering in the beginning. Especially how you did "Q". Whoa. This level... is such a looker .

Pretty hard at some parts though. Took about 20 lives to get past the second zipline bit. Whew, I'm glad that's done lol. Very nice platforming construction after the checkpoint. Lmao, I like how you did the paintinator gun.

Wow, that was really enjoyable! I love the multi paintinator switches at the boss. I think it stays very true to the Rachet and Clank visually. I don't know about the story though as I've forgotten lol. 5/5 & hearted from me. Awesome work!

I'm gonna check out another level of yours cuz this one was so good. And wtf? this level only has 3 stars? BLASPHEMY! Certainly deserves more stars & plays. I'll be telling my friends about this one.

I played this level yesterday and it was really well designed as far as platforming and visually. I enjoyed the ziplines and thought they were a really neat innovative way to make the level more Ratchet and Clanky. It really did feel like a vid-comic and it was beautiful for a one layer level.I gave it :star::star::star::star::star: and I hope that you continue to make some more Ratchet and Clank levels beacause you have captured the essence of it extremely well. Good job dude!2010-04-10 22:02:00

20 lives? Thanks for the commitment!
Hahaha, I have had many complaints about that 2nd zipline platform being too difficult. So many now that I'll sacrifice the tribute a little and change it to a stable sponge for the players. Only a niche bunch have played the orginal version of this anyway, way less than I thought!
A little refresher on the story: Captain Qwark was Dr. Nefarious' enemy/rival back when Nef. was human!
Thanks for the other kind words, my levels are getting better with each one, (this is definitely my best visually) and my first three levels are quite tricky to complete! Only one person has completed "sound in space". har har.

Thankyou, I did enjoy creating this one, so there might be another R&C level from me someday.

---

Another note, I have updated the level with Qwark costume prize bubbles for anyone who manages to find all 6 Qwark tokens! Very good quality stickers, best in LBP. I'll post a picture of him when I get home.
Plus optional directions/intro from Qwark, just go to the left when you start the level.
Oh you can also get the Qwark logo from a prize bubble now!

Hi there, I played your level last night. It was a very good looking level, I liked the scenerary and I really did like the challenging gameplay.

I will have to try it again as I was only able to get to the second zip line because the platform you fall onto that falls down didn't reset. I think it may be a glitch because I know from earlier that they did reset when I wasn't quick enough and they fell down. I will post again when I get another chance to play it with better feedback.

I just thought you might want to know about the issue I experienced. While I replay it, can you check out my Retro Retribution level (link is in the sig). I'll be posting again soon!

Lol, I wanted to see more of the level so I wanted to get past that part no matter what.

I see.. it still doesn't ring a bell lol. I've only played Tools of Destruction . Even then I think I was only hellbent on upgrading my weapons LOL. And yeah, I played your sound in space level.. It's pretty hard LOL. I quit before I got to finish it though. It's pretty tricky x[

Ok now I finally finished your level. I thought it was actually quite fun. It shows that you can make a good level with one layer. I like the platforming bits and the enemies. I did think that after a while the two enemies got very annoying fighting them over and over again. I also think the dr. nefarious fight could be tweaked a bit as his jumping only seemed to happen on the right part of the room, it would be cool if you made it so he jumped more randomly or in different places because if you spawned to the left of him you were going to die.

Overall I thought the visuals and gameplay was very good. I would work on changing up the enemies a bit but that is my only real complaint. If you get a chance, can you check out Retro Retribution, I know I said it before but there is nothing wrong in repetition right?

To continue my feedback, you asked what parts were cheap and I considered the fire bugs incredibly cheap. I didn't see the "explosion stickers" at all and the placement of some of them along with the terrain made it frustrating for me. I'll take another look today and edit this post to give you specific locations.

I'm gonna go ahead and make this my re-review, since I don't think I went in depth enough on my first one. Also because you so kindly went very in depth in your review of my level.

1. In the beginning, I did not know to goto the left for the introduction the first time I played and I ventured there this time to find the intro. Maybe make the sensor radius larger?
2. The Q platforms just before the 2nd slider allow you to land on one of the bottom Q platforms if you miss the 2nd Q platform.
3. First frustrating point: The sliders are great and they really do look like the game. However, I know the game doesn't allow you to hang on to them at the end but in this case they go so fast that at one point it became frustrating. Let me elaborate: The 2nd slider you have makes you land EXACTLY on a platform that will fall seconds after you land on it. Meaning you must land perfectly, as I write this I still haven't passed that point and decided I'd come write it down before I forget. Additionally, when I finally landed on that platform correctly, I jumped to the next and then tryed for the 3rd and it seems as though you have to hit it PERFECTLY in order to get on that third platform and that was frustrating as well because I finally had gotten past that slider and then I died before I could get to the next checkpoint.
4. The fire bug spitter things are exactly what had annoyed me last time. I immediately remember why it felt frustrating to me after fighting the very first one. How you have the terrain set up it means that you can't really hit it with the gun without shooting straight up into the air or getting close to the edge. The problem with that is when you get close to the edge, EVERY time you get hit immediately by a firebug which either gets rid of your gun or kills you. As I write this I have died about 6 times on the first firebug.
5. The firebugs become quickly repetitive for me; but with the 3rd one you have the "terrain" also is very difficult to use as you have two spitting out at you and the only place to hide is right behind that wall. It'd be less frustrating if maybe the firebugs came out less frequently? either way it was difficult to hide behind that wall and with them constantly coming out it was hard to shoot the thing. I eventually realized that i could just skip it all together if i jumped on the elevator pad.
6. The 4th and 5th firebug is where I got really P.O.'d last time The terrain here really ticked me off because just like I said before you can't shoot it unless you get close to it, which usually gets you killed or takes away your weapon. But this one doesn't stop there, one of the bugs from either 4 or 5 constantly lands right where the gun is placed. Again, maybe lower the frequency to help alleviate this or change where they shoot at? not sure.
7. The 2nd "spinning shooter" was unusually difficult. I'm unsure if it is because of the tiny area you're confined to or if the opening is too small. But I died plenty of times on that. Wasn't AS frustrating since the spawn point was right there.
8. The nefarious battle was less than satisfying. Not sure what to improve here, but for some reason it wasn't satisfying to shoot at a boss that's the same size as you.

Now on to the good points:
1. I really liked the idea of the hidden bubbles that you need to collect. It was fun for me and they were really well placed (and looked great too!), and ACTUALLY made me want to replay it to get them all despite the fact that I found much of it very frustrating.
2. The level is fantastic looking and definately felt very much like ratchet and clank.
3. The humor at the end was good and matched up with ratchet and clank.
4. The other two "spinning shooters" weren't so bad to fight.
5. The sliders work really well except that they go so fast and its hard to land on that one platform.
6. The paintinator design was really cool and refreshing.
7. The disappearing Q platforms were fun to go through, and not too difficult.

-I hear you about the bugs. I have replaced some with a puzzle, I hope that helps beat the repetition a little.
-When I was building the boss I made sure his jumps spanned the whole room, I replayed it and it seems to be working fine for me. You can control your sackboy as he falls to avoid the boss, 5% of the time you happen to be falling at the same time the off centre plasma is firing, I might add a platform up there now that the gun is no longer infinite.

=============================================

To continue my feedback, you asked what parts were cheap and I considered the fire bugs incredibly cheap. I didn't see the "explosion stickers" at all and the placement of some of them along with the terrain made it frustrating for me. I'm gonna go ahead and make this my re-review, since I don't think I went in depth enough on my first one. Also because you so kindly went very in depth in your review of my level.
Thanks, I'll look into making the explosion stickers more visible.

1. In the beginning, I did not know to goto the left for the introduction the first time I played and I ventured there this time to find the intro. Maybe make the sensor radius larger?
You wern't inticed to go to the left by the point bubbles or Qwark cutout?

2. The Q platforms just before the 2nd slider allow you to land on one of the bottom Q platforms if you miss the 2nd Q platform.
Since that section was so difficult I left that in. And I was hoping the Qwark tokens/prize bubbles would make the player go for each one at least once the first time they played the section.

Yes, I saw a ton of people dying there so I sacrificed the recration a little, and changed that troublesome falling platform for a static one, with sponge, on an angle! I play tested it, and if you only hold R1 on the zipline you fall onto it and not off the edge. I also changed the colour of it so players would see that it is different to the rest.

I see your point about the "edge of the terrain". I'll increase the arc of the firebug so it wont hit you on the edge.

I purposely made some of the bugs skippable if people were having too much trouble or was a pacifist.
I'll decrease the frequency on both sets. And stop that cartain one form landing on the gun.
For the record those last two that are close together only take half as many shots to kill as the others.

7. The 2nd "spinning shooter" was unusually difficult. I'm unsure if it is because of the tiny area you're confined to or if the opening is too small. But I died plenty of times on that. Wasn't AS frustrating since the spawn point was right there.
Hmm. Did you move around (left to right) while you were fighting them? Or stay still and jump?

8. The nefarious battle was less than satisfying. Not sure what to improve here, but for some reason it wasn't satisfying to shoot at a boss that's the same size as you.
Haha. I knew I would get some stick for a small sized boss. But hey, hes not as small as the collector.
I guess he did have a giant mech though.
In the orginal Qwark platformer, Qwark can jump twice as high as sackboy (and Nef was twice as high too), so I had to shrink it for LBP, as I wanted the player to be able to jump over the boss like in the original.
I loved the Dr. Nefarious hologuise/skin in "A Crack in Time" as he looks so cute. So that's the main reason for his proportions.

Now on to the good points:
1. I really liked the idea of the hidden bubbles that you need to collect. It was fun for me and they were really well placed (and looked great too!), and ACTUALLY made me want to replay it to get them all despite the fact that I found much of it very frustrating.

6. The paintinator design was really cool and refreshing.
7. The disappearing Q platforms were fun to go through, and not too difficult.
1. Always good to hear.
2. Yay!
3. Whats a R&C level without the humor?
4. I'm happy with that, as these are my first enemies/sub-boss/boss ever.
5. Fixed! You can now slide to your hearts content!
6. I thought it looked cool. Glad others like it.
7. Just the balance I wanted.

Thanks so much for your in depth review. Much appreciated.

On the 2nd spinning shooter I think I did a combination of moving left to right AND standing still. Again, No idea why it was much more difficult than the other 2. And truthfully I don't even think I noticed the quark cutout or bubbles the first time (unsure why). Maybe I'm just an oddball or something 2010-04-12 14:02:00

Maybe you played the level while I was in the middle of adding the Qwark intro or something.

It had a visible paintball switch on the wall behind it, but nothing happened when it died and the switch went all the way down. It's the first one if there are more afterwards.

Hey I booted up your level and sat down with my paper and pen. Looks like page is still blank! I couldn't see anything that was broken, really lovely level! I loved the platforming it was lots of fun, I did scream a few times but in a good way! Only thing I thought was whatever those little black creatures were they looked more like rats! I think I remember them being called something else but anywho.. 5 stars + heart!2010-04-16 16:27:00

This level was definitely Qwark-tastic! I felt like playing those Qwark Mini games we all cherished and loved
The color use was brilliant
The gameplay was really good
Gun design, R&C style
A cute sense of humor like we all know from MR. Qwark
An amazing level overall.
Something every R&C fans should play.
:star::star::star::star::star: and a lovely heart

It was really Qwarkish. I really think you did a good job on this level. I haven't got a lot to say, that other haven't allready said.

I really like the emmited jump parts. The level was hard, so I was glad I got a great score. The paintinators were cool decorated. Really great design. I felt as if I played the old game from PS2.

The minibosses was fun and challenging. Challenging until you found out the pattern of its movements.

Why have you published the level twice?

Good. I hate broken levels.
Haha. Everyone has their own take on what the fire enemies are, I love it! I might encorporate an ambiguous criptid into my next level. Maybe take my animation (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/522150)a step further in LBP.

Pleased you liked the minibosses, as they took a while since it was the first enemy I have created, haha.
I have published it twice because it was originally a one-layer comp entry, but I still had thermo after the deadline and wanted to polish it up a bit more. I didn't want to risk disqualification so I republished it as a new level. Plus the one layer scoreboard didn't always work with multiple players.
I would definitely recommend buying (or at the very least renting!) the PS3 R&C games. They are pretty good.

Hi, I managed to get time to play your level this weekend. First of all, let me tell you that is LAME that you have only 3 stars. In fact, I played your level twice, and gave you 2x5* (for the shake of the equilibrium of the universe, you know ). I taged it "Platforms"

The level is cool, I liked it and it was fun. Nevertheless I have not played the game you used as inspiration, so perhaps I didn't understand some things of the level .

In more detail:

GOOD:
- the intro with the logo is awesome
- in general, the visual aspect is nice
- the platforms are fun. There is a good equilibrium between challenge and fun
- the difficult is correct
- final boss
- the customized gun is cool. You should give it as a prize

THINGS YOU COULD CONSIDER:
- although platforms are nice, they are a bit repetitive. You could try to add other elements, like something that you have to grab.
- the visual aspect is nice, but some areas looks a bit empty. I don't know exactly how you could improve it, and where... It's just that the level didn't give the feeling that it's perfect... I don't know if you know what I mean... Perhaps, adding areas where the sack have to move behind camera could improve this. Would be something similar to the paths I used extensively in my factory level
- regarding this last point, the level would be more complete if you had to play between several layers
- the boss is too easy. I told you it's cool that you have boss, but it is rather simple and too easy. I was killed just one time. I noticed some plasma balls behind, but they weren't dangeruous at all. You could increase easily the difficult adding more plasma balls, for example

Well, overall the level is really cool, but there is room for improvement in the gameplay (adding more elements) and the visual aspect (playing around several layers). It's sad that somehow people is punishing something of the level, but I don't know what can it be... suckers lol.

Better quit while you're a-HEAD!
One of my favorite R&C moments from one of my favorite R&C levels. This captures the feel of the original completely. The Nefarious fight was also Really well done (Though a lot easier than original Well done with the fitness course too, It was excatly alike! But that could be a bad thing, since people want to see original stuff. My friend I played this with seemed to be bothered by the fact that this was a "Rip-off". I didn't care for it, because this was so well-excecuted.
Great job! Will go on my hearted list(But I was in friends pod so not today)

I thank you for your feedback on my level once more, because I got to fix some glitches, but mainly because I got to play this awesome level!(BTW the glitches in B2 have been now fixed--- You need to pass the sea monster, not kill it)

You got the look and feel of Ratchet and Clank spot on here! The machinery and the colourful surroundings were awesome!

I loved how you used the syringes from the incredibles pack to make skyscrapers in the background!

The gameplay was nice and varied and wasn't too difficult. The hazards that spread apart due to the rockets were probably my favourite part of the level! I don't think i've seen anything like like that before, so nice one!

It was good to read some trademark R & C humour hear! Definitely a-Head of it time in that category!

The gameplay of the boss was pretty good but the design wasn't up to the standard of the rest of the level. Did you run out of thermo by this point?

Overall :star::star::star::star: and a heart!

Thanks for the feedback on my level!

Hey! I just played your level, thought it was very nice. I also love R&C.

Although some areas were very fun, I found that the camra angles were abit dodgy when I needed to shoot something.
The platforming was very good and I likes the boss. Although maybe he could get abit more difficult near the end?

All in all, it's a very fun level. 5 stars! Thanks for your feedback on mine.

Yeah, me too a little, but there have been some really good levels lately so I don't feel too bad.

I did republish it as another level, that has 5 stars atm As the (1LCE) version was published as a beta that I have contantly updated to fix minor errors and such.
Maybe I will give the gun away as a prize. It is fairly awesome.
I am aware the platforms/fire bugs can get a little repetitive, but I didn't want to change -too- much of the level as it is a bit of a tribute to Qwark and Insomniac.
I only used the front layer because this level was originally a entry to a "one-layer-only" comp. And the level I based it off worked well with one. I will definitely use a combination of all three in my next level.
Difficulty is really hard to get right. When I first published it, hardly anyone finished the darn level and said it was too hard, so I scaled it back a little in most areas. Originally the boss area didn't have the "safe" platform, but that led to cheap deaths which I now try to minimize.
Thanks for this, I really appreciate your in depth comments.

Haha, yeah mine too.
I do see your point in originality, I do prefer that. But since there were NO vid-comic recreations in LBP, it had to be done. I did change up a few things (adding qwark costume stickers/replaced bugs with a "puzzle"/secret areas/etc) to make it even more fun. Thanks for the kind words.

Yes, I did enjoy the colours in this one. I think I shall make my next level yellow.
Glad you noticed the syringes!
Yes the rocket/plasma was probably my favourite dynamic as I haven't seen much like it in LBP either.
HA! That pun is even worse than Qwarks!
As for the boss visuals, I just wanted to keep it simple and I was loving that reflective black tile material at the time. I suppose I could add some piping or something to the ground. I shall look into it, thanks!

By the cameras do you mean the small enemies or the spinning/plasma ones? or both?
Ok, so that's 3 people saying the boss is too easy. I'll revisit him to ramp it up a little.

I've been a fan of Insomniac and the Ratchet series since R&C1 in 2002 (the Morph-a-Ray commercial made it a definite buy for me, back in the day), so to say that this level does good justice to the ingenuity of that game is great. The vid-comics were all so very fun in Up Your Arsenal, and you've got a great tribute to it in this level. The design is spot on, the Quark text at the beginning is pretty in-character, and the platforming translates really well to the LBP-style. I tend to agree with a previous poster who mentioned that the last bug-sphere lasted kinda long (which reminds me, those are replicated really well, too).

I enjoyed running around your level knowing where most of the secrets are, and the extra secrets and differences from the original was some nice creative-control on your part. I gave this five stars. Nice work!

I've been praying for a Ratchet & Clank level pack for so long! I think that the R&C universe would translate really well into LBP levels, and this makes me want it more. Think of the awesome materials, music, and maybe a new powerup that they could give us... oh well, a guy can dream.

Also,

Very Fun Ratchet and Clank level it stands out by far from all the rest
Love the platforming and difficult creatures very challenging to beat
One part in the level does lag when you fall for the first time onto the elctrifyed plasma
platform below it was very difficult since it was lagging everytime I died
I give this level a 4 of 5 love the level ty for the feedback on my level also

OK, I'm loading the level right now, first off, your badge looks really cool, the black background really makes the Q stand out.

It's done loading now, it looks really clean cut, and i like how you decorated your score bubbles. I read the speech bubble, so I'll try to find the secrets. I just died, I like how you used plasmafied material instead of electricity, fire, or gas.

I'm at the second checkpoint, I like the stickered object from the Incredibles pack. I like the timed platforms that fall if you stay on them too long, very challenging.

The taxi part is cool, it's fun, and the speech bubble made me laugh. I love how you decorated the paintanator. I like the new enemies. I just found one of the secret spots.

I like how you showed how many shots were left for the rotating enemies. The puzzle where you have to rotate the wheel to get the mag key to the mag key switch is fun, and I like how you added the music. Lol,I is smart.

I'm fighting Dr, Nefarious now, it's a cool boss idea. I ;ike the health gauge you made for him, that is ingenious. I defeated him,I love the dialogue. I found all the secrets but one.

I rated it :star::star::star::star::star:, hearted it, and tagged it beautiful.

Do you think for the unlockable costume pieces, if it each green token unlocked one part of the costume?
Did you like the all or nothing approach to the prizes?
Or would you prefer getting one piece for each green token you find? (which seems to be the norm in LBP levels)

Yeah, those R&C commericals are definitely my favourite kind of advertising.
Yay, I hoped people who played the original would like having that inside knowledge to help their collecting/score.
Yes. I think I will lessen the hits on the last spinning bug thing.
Insomniac + MM = win.

Yeah, I did notice the lag sometimes.
Next time I use plasma I will try to find an interesting way to shoot it to eliminiate it.

Yes, I seem to prefer plasma deaths as they are way less common than fire/gas/electricity/spikes. MM should add some more hazards I think.
Glad you enjoyed all the little elements.

Here is my review in return for your feedback on my level.

Okay, first off all, I had a blast playing this level. Very fun and smooth. But then I was a bit disappointed when I realized that this level is a remake. That means that all those great obstacles weren't your ideas.

But well, thinking of the level as a remake... it was flawlessly well-done. I checked a YouTube video that showed the original level, and boy, your level is absolutely spot-on. You emulated all the colours and the structures so accurately that it is impressive. You also made a great use of prize bubbles and stickers to make the different kinds of pick-ups. Overall, I am certain that this is as close as you could get to reproducing that level using the LBP engine. It is an impressive display of technical skills.

But the thing is, in my opinion levels shouldn't only pack technical content, but also design content. What I mean is, your level works flawlessly, looks great and is really fun to play... but you weren't the one who designed the gameplay. When I judge a level, I always take into account the author's design skills. You know, having surprising ideas for platforming obstacles and such. And the design of your level is not yours, but another person's. Your level feels more like a display of technical skills rather than like a display of creativity.

So, how do I rate such a level? I felt tempted to rate your level :star::star::star:, but I realized that deciding to "port" a level over to LBP for people to play is in a way a display of creative initiative. Plus, your level was, again, a blast to play. It is a fun addition to the LBP level library. It would feel a bit unfair to rate it 3 stars. So, I am going to rate your level :star::star::star::star:. Awesome remake, but, again, it would have been twice as awesome if it had been spawned by a user's imagination.

Now, a technical problem that I found. I was playing this with another player, right? Well, in one of the areas after the puzzle (not sure if it was right after the puzzle or a bit later) where the path is closed by a descending door, we had a problem. I passed through the door and the path closed, but my friend was lots behind m, and the door closed on him. He got stuk. Not only that, I got immediately killed after the door was closed, so I didn't get to touch the checkpoint. So, my friend got stuck behind the closed door, and we thought that we wouldn't be able to finih the level. We managed to go on by respawning and exploiting the location of one of the checkpoints. You should work on making your level more smooth for multiplayer.

I totally see where you coming from in regards to remakes/ports, and support you and your rating system. While LBP handles remakes well, I too enjoy seeing original levels spawned from imagination just as much as the IPs were know and love.

As for the technical issue, once the boss entry door closes, the boss checkpoint is activated, so secondary players just need to pop themselves to progress.
Personally I don't care for magic mouths explaining how to do things (ex. tap r1, pop self if this breaks, etc) as I feel it breaks the immersion somewhat. I'll see if I can add a laser to the left (which activates after the door closes) to cater for the multiplayers here. I should have done this before.

Thanks for the review in return, much appreciated.
You will be happy to know my next level will support multiplayer and be 100% original.
OK, so I will have a few references throughout, so more like 99% original. haha.

EDIT:
- Shortened last buig sphere's HP.
- Fixed 2 player boss entry point.
- Added some decoration in boss room.

I wasn't quite sure how to rate this level...I really don't enjoy the paintinator/infinite lives gameplay mechanic...but at the same time was happy to have those infinite lives because I died...and died a lot!

You may wish to just chaulk this up to my lack of aiming skill but I felt the paintinator sections were a little too random...stuff comes flying out with seeminly no discernable pattern...I felt many of my deaths were cheap and unfair. The camera also seemed a little off in the areas with the red spiny things that shoot the electrified white thingys along the ground...I would have liked to see my feet...I also had no idea what was aimng for...I just shot into the air as fast as I could.

I did like the visuals and platforming sections with the Q blocks. I got a chuckle from slim-cognito and the 3d exhaust stickers on the paintinator. The small bits of dialog were also good. The secrets were also well done and fun to look for. For a LBP remake of the R&C mini-game I thought it was quite well done.

Because of the paintinator I also didn't have fun with the final boss fight...I found running out of ammo pretty annoying...I didn't know you could set the ammo for the paint gun.

Anyway, I ended up giving the level 5 stars just because I'm a terrible judge of whether the paintinator sections were good or not, but the rest of the level was certainly great so you got the benefit of the doubt.

* Minor error in 2nd quark speech bubble in the begining, "wil" is missing a L.

Thanks for playing!
On the topic of random fire bugs: There are explosion stickers on the ground where the bugs land, so avoid those areas. I might have to go back and replace them with something more visible.
And i'll look into the cameras again (I tried lowering them once before, but I then the enemy went out of screen sometimes) for the spinning things. As for the layer having no indication what part to shoot, I felt it didn't matter as if the aimed for the center, they would hit the outer bugs (paint switches) anyway.
Ah the ammo on the boss. Since the original emitted the limted ammo gun, I decided to do the same to shake the player up a little. I couldn't make the guns fall like the original (as only one layer) so I just built everything around the central stable gun pickup.
I'll have to fix the typo too! I thought that looked weird.

It looks great. Hopefully I can remember to check this out when i get back to my PS3. Hey and if that Quark logo isn't a prize in the current level, can you make it a prize? That looks great!
Don't worry, it's already a prize! It's in the same location as the health upgrade in the original.
Looks like your a fan of Qwark judging by your avatar!

EDIT: Lowered all three sphere cameras (good call on that, looks much better) and fixed typos.

Hey, I played it, and here's my feedback:

1) The setting, visually, is captured perfectly here. You did a good job simulating blocks coming outward towards the camera, and your paintinators look a lot like the flamethrowers from the other vid-comics. Visually, mission accomplished.

2) I found a glitch where one of your spinning, fire-shooting swarms had one bug break and then the health bar slowly drained on its own until it died. I didn't do anything and it died.

3) It's really hard, harder than the vid comic it's based on. I don't know if you meant it to be as hard as it is. Almost every platform jump requires the player to hold X as long as possible, and flaming bugs seem to come at ridiculous angles and kill the player out of nowhere.

4) The sound design is lacking. For a level like this, it's important to remember the original score and try to choose songs to emulate it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNys5GoZ7_k&feature=related

5) You might want to consider rebuilding your Nefarious. His design looks sort of... amateur. I understand you were trying to make a sackboy version of Nefarious, but it just looks cheesy. Maybe I've just played too many crappy levels with creatures made to look similar to that, and I've come to associate that look with crappy levels.

As nitpicky as I sound, this is all merely constructive criticism. I really enjoyed the level. I rated 5 Stars and Hearted it. *Butt Pat*

Beautiful level, good atmosphere
I don't know the universe of Ratchet & Clank but all your artworks look fine !
The gameplay is pleasant, platforming, bosses difficulty is well balanced
Good idea to show a life bar for the big boss
Maybe I would add more ambiant musics
Anyway I gave a :star::star::star::star::star: and a deserved <3

Awesome level!
The end boss definitely needs improvement. He's not very much like the boss in the vid-comic.
I have a question for you. How did you make the sackboy reflection right before Nefarious?

F4F: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=27684-ZOMG!-Survive-the-Zombie-Takeover!
1) Yay. =)
2) Oh. When I was building them, I was using cardboard and they broke contantly. I changed it to metal and didn't have any problems after that. Sorry that happened, must have been that LBP nuance of the 0.01% breakage. I wish small sized materials worked the same as large ones. :/
3) Yeah, long after the build I realised I made a mistake in the early platforms. I have since learnt then to ease the player into the difficulty curve a lot more. You can see where the flaming bugs will land, there is an explosion sticker for each one. Someone else commented on this, I'll go back and try something a little more visible.
4) Mmm, yes. I did have trouble choosing the music as there isn't much sci-fi themed music that tickles my fancy. So in the end I just chose some fun music that I have always enjoyed. I will experiement with the music tracks (and sfx) in my next level.
5) Heh, cut-outs. Some love em, some hate em. I'm still on the fence about them.
*goes to make a thread*

Thanks for the constructive criticism. It means a lot and helps me become a better creator. >=) *determined*

Yeah, as Nive commented, this level was originally for a one-layer only contest.
Use of all three layers is also one of my priorities for my next level.

Awesome level!
The end boss definitely needs improvement. He's not very much like the boss in the vid-comic.
I have a question for you. How did you make the sackboy reflection right before Nefarious?
Yes. I found it very hard to emulate the boss. It didn't transfer to LBP well, and I'm sure my limited logic skills played a part.
In the end I simplified it, and made my favourite element (jumping over the boss) a key one.
As for the reflection, it's simply a "milk bottle" object in the layer behind. =)

Thanks again for all the great feedback.
I'll be sure to check out your levels, F4F or not.

I played the level again (I played an early version, several months ago). It is much better now!!!

Unfortunatelly I haven't too many things to comment about this level:

- only one layer is too simple, I love to play in several layers (but it was for a conquest, so you had to fit that )
- as many people has noticed before, the music does not fit too much

Besides that, the level is great visually, with great design, and great gameplay, great and well hidden secrets... :star::star::star::star::star: and <3

By the way, I have noticed just now you are being rated :star::star::star::star::star: with thousand of plays. Congratulations! that's not easy at all. I can't wait to see the new level you are preparing

Thanks, it means a lot to me that you took the time to replay after the fixes.
Yes, I republished it under a new level, mainly to shed the harsher 1LCE competition/beta ratings after I added some crucial game changing fixes. I am very happy with the stats as they stand, it's not up to the ridiculous cool page numbers, but I prefer a decent heart/play ratio over sheer play count. My ultimate goal would be to take that #1 level spot on the "ratchet clank" search.
Thanks for the level comment too, love getting those. I added that gun as a prize because of your comment. =)
As for my next level, I'm aiming to make it my best level ever, and to prove I don't need to rely on established IPs.
Thanks again for the comments!

I'm a big R&C fan (played 'em all) and I've gotta say you captured the look and spirit of that great series perfectly. I can't really find anything wrong with the level at all. It played smoothly, it looked great, it was packed with secret areas and it really felt like R&C in 2D. Love what you did with the paintinator...it looked just like Ratchets blaster from the games. If there's any criticism it's that the music didn't quite fit, but I don't know if there's a better alternative given the poor selection of tunes with LBP. Also, I was hoping to find some gold bolts. Perhaps you could place some in the secret areas?

Anyhow, I can't wait to see what you can do with an R&C level once the grapple gun is available as a power-up in LBP2.

Excellent stuff! :star::star::star::star::star:<3

Yes, I'm sure LBP will have some fitting music for these types of levels. Not to mention taking it further with the music editor.
As Blackfalcon stated, there was no gold bolts in the original, but there are the 7 green prize bubbles hidden throughout, plus a few areas with bubbles you can blow up to get into.
I might just make another R&C level in LBP2 (won't know until I play it of course), and I'll be sure to have Ratchet as the protagonist and definitely hide some gold bolts if I make that one. Looking foward to playing around with the grapple.
Thanks for checking it out.

Anyways, for your second addition to your R & C series, I think the addition of a point system for the bubbles/points you collect. This should be much easier to incorporate because you mainly use the one layer. It could easily side scroll along your character but the biggest challenge would for it to follow vertically...2010-11-01 00:58:00

Yeah, definitely going to add some combos. Only reason I didn't have them/many in this level, is that I wanted to keep the #50 token/bubble count/position the same as in the original.
Oh yes, and I am going to experiment with sidescrolling/HUD mechanics in LBP2. The follower tool will make it a breeze for the vertical movement.
Possibly weapon upgrades too (someone had made a great functional one already in the beta).
Thanks again for the review, I added a link in the OP.

So here is my review for your level. And stuff.

I remember playing this game in Up your Arsenal. This seemed to be quite the accurate recreation. The visuals were good, the gameplay was good, everything worked fine, and the Qwark costume is a neat incentive. Here's a few things to consider improving upon:

-The enemies looks a bit odd. As in I have no idea what they are supposed to be. I don't remember what the enemies looked like in the original Deja Q vidcomic, but maybe you could make them a bit more detailed.

-Sometimes the minibosses with their spreading plasma ends up having both the plasma balls go the same way (left every time for me).

-Nefarious didn't really look much like himself, aside from the jewel for his head. Maybe you could make him thinner and add some more detail if possible.

-I thought the choice for Qwark's voice in the speech bubbles didn't sound much like him. I haven't really checked out all the voices recently, but maybe you could get something a bit better.

Really nice, especially considering it's a remake of a game and restrained by the LBP engine. 4 stars.

Thanks for the play and review.
The enemies are supposed to be flying bug insects. They are not excessively detailed as no stickers show up when placed on a fire hazard. I could add a thin layer, but then they might make contact with various blades of grass and such details.
It would be too much hassle to change every one (LBP2's dynamic emitter would be so helpful, arg..), so I'll just have to keep it in mind on my next levels.

Hmm, this only happened to me when I shot the hazard with the paintinator (I should have made the hazard out of a heavier material).
Surely it doesn't spawn backwards or anything right?
I'll have another play through just in case. Just checked, worked fine for me. I'll wait for your reply as to what happened.

Ha, ok, I get it. No one likes my Nefarious.
I'll have another play around with the thin layer, and see if any other decorations work.
Or perhaps remodel his head. The small size is killing me, never again shall I work so small!
EDIT: Modified his jawline a little.

Qwark's voice. Aww, I thought it quite suited him.
I went through all the voices when creating them, I think my final options were the current one, or silent.
But I'll take another look through them anyway.
EDIT: Yeah, no other voice even comes close to the real Qwark. I feel I chose the best one.

Very good level, the bosses were challenging but not frustrating and the platforming on the retracting and falling platforms was great. However, some of the parts where fireballs are emitted kind of slow down the flow since you have to establish their patterns before you try to advance. This is definitely a worthwhile remake of the original2011-01-29 22:41:00
