I thought of this a while ago, but working like the magnetic key switches- like the key is attracted to the switch, and you can set radius, power, and positive / negative charge. and if you wanted the whole block to be magnetised, you just surround the edges with keys.

When they are close enough the magnetic key is activated emitting a small piece of material into a small hole in the magnet, this is attached to another small piece of material in the object it's being attracted to via a stiff rod. They are now attached. It's pretty **** hard to do though...
