monstahr's all-in-one guide to starting out!

Archive: 23 posts

I know I'm unknown around here, but I have posted this elsewhere, and I used to be... somewhat of a presence on PlanetRenders, so I think what's here applies. Some things may be outdated, and I reference anime a bit and I don''ttttt watch it anymore. I hope it doesn't come across as condescending. The forum I originally posted this on was full of dummies. Not like here. This is all truth though. Feel free to ignore it... AT YOUR PERIL.

This is intended to help people who want to get a kickstart into the crazzzaaaay world of innernet graffick.

------------------------------------------------------------------

First, you're gonna need resources.

Get Mozilla Firefox. Internet Explorer sucks. Good job! You're on your way!

Most of the sites you're gonna use require registration. To reduce spam in your normal e-mail account, set up another. like SUPERGRAFFIX666@hotmail.com

Renders you can find at planetrenders.net, though I'm sure most of you know that. You have to make an account, yes, but I'm pretty sure it's the biggest source of renders around. Also note that when you find a render you like, you have to SAVE the image file, copying and pasting will lose the transparency.

Planet Renders (http://www.planetrenders.net)
Game Renders (http://www.gamerenders.com)
Anime Render (http://www.animerender.com)

Stock images are found all over, but beware of things like google images. Copyright infringement could land you in trouble. Safe sites are stock packs on deviantart (yes, you gotta make an account, and when you do, just search stock of whatever you want) and stock.xchng (another registration, but well worth it, lots of stock images here). I find last.fm to be good for musician pictures. I dunno if you can access them or not without an account. You should get an account anyway, last.fm is the bomb. Also, beware that stocks here tend to be smaller, and some may be copyrighted. Anime stocks best come from wallpapers. You can find a lot of these at anime paper. Anime Stocks has stills from actual episodes if you wish, but the quality isn't too great. It's down at the moment.

deviantART (http://www.deviantart.com)
Resurgere (http://resurgere.deviantart.com/)
stock.xchng (http://www.sxc.hu)
last.fm (http://last.fm)
and ONLY as a last ditch resort, look CAREFULLY for copyrights on any image, I am not responsible for any issues:
Google Images (http://images.google.com)

As you're starting out, you're probably going to WANT to look for super cool fonts. You don't have to. The default ones are fine for pretty much everything. If you still feel the need for some reason, try dafont. No registration necessary.

dafont (http://dafont.com)

And brushes. Deviantart is your best bet, again. Just search what brushes you want. Splatter, grunge, tech, smudge, whatever.

deviantART (http://www.deviantart.com)

A great resource for resources (lolz) is the PlanetRenders forum. You have to make another account, in addition to the one you made for the render gallery. It's confusing, I know. But once you sign up and sign in, you have access to tons of resources, for free. Renders, C4Ds, brushes, vector shapes, tutorials, smudge settings, stock images. You really can't go wrong with signing up here. People often post downloads to packs of stocks or links to 'stockbuckets'. Beware, they may contain dA copyrighted images.

PlanetRenders Forums (http://planetrenders.net/forums/index.php?act=idx)

Looks like you're pretty much set for resources, neh? Alright, rad. Time to make better stuff. Your Planet Renders Forum account comes in handy again, here. Get a bunch of tutorials. A lot of the free ones are just as good as the ones that you gotta pay for, so don't worry about that. Look them over. It's not necessary to follow each and every one, but it's handy when you're wondering how to do some sort of effect. Also in the free resources section are PSDs. These are invaluable sources of inspiration for many, as they're more hands-on than just tutorials.

Next: Make stuff! Yeah, pick a suitable canvas size, get your render, or stock, or whatever, and fool around. Voila, perfect art! Get a photobucket account, and upload your super sig. Hm, what do the folks online think about your masterpiece, you wonder? You could post it on a site much like this. Marriland is blessed with a couple skilled designer folk. Protip: don't bother. Or at least don't post it JUST on here. The longer you solely post on a site like this, the more you will be convinced that you are EL33T GREFFIXER OF HIGH SKILLZ when in all likelihood, you are not. It's the truth. Eat it.

Photobucket (http://www.photobucket.com)

Instead, back to Planet Renders! Scroll down, there's a Graphics Critique forum. Post your super awesome signatures for everyone to see. Suddenly, you aren't so great. People will readily tell you that the colors are awful, the border has to go, the compo is atrocious. Oh no! But don't give up! These guys aren't just hatin' on your sweet skills. They're giving you tips to improve. Listen to them. If you get offended, say so, but no one will take you seriously. It's actually very amusing. So understand that when you start out, you are a novice.

(hint: the fact that you made something in gimp rather than photoshop won't mean anything to anyone)

Now that your ego's been ripped to shreds, go back to photoshop or gimp and rework the sig, using the suggestions. If someone's comment is vague, don't be afraid of asking them to explain, as long as you aren't doing this defensively. Re-upload, re-post, and bam, instant improvement! Or not, depending on whether or not you took advice well.

Final Tips
-Your name doesn't need to be in any sig you make. Neither does a border. Rippers probably won't want your beginning sigs, and if they did, it wouldn't be hard to remove your name.
-Bikini-clad babes are excellent, but they alone don't make a sig 'hot'
-Check the 'Most Inspirational Small Art' thread stickied in Planet Renders' design talk subforum. It's got really good stuff. Really.
-People on the internet are generally friendly enough to help you out; send a PM if you wanna know how some smudging is done, or where you can find a certain stock.
-Most of the graphics community has a MSN messenger account, so you'd better get on board, boy-o. Just don't annoy people. And don't tell them I sent you.
-The vast majority of designers are novices on sites such as these. Hold your praise for someone who deserves it.
-THE INTERNET IS SERIOUS BUSINESS

I also liked this line:

The longer you solely post on a site like this, the more you will be convinced that you are EL33T GREFFIXER OF HIGH SKILLZ when in all likelihood, you are not. It's the truth. Eat it.

Hey man I played your level today and it was really good I love the way everything works together the colors the characters they are very good. Also I love the way you use Mr. Media Molecule everywhere the colors were really nice.

What I hope you can fix is the puzzle/gameplay because there are a lot of parts of the level that I just grab stuff (I am not saying that I dont like grabbing things in LBP but it get annoying) I think you should create a puzzle that wound be really nice

Overall score.

Visualization: :star::star::star::star::star:
Music: :star::star::star::star::star:
gameplay/puzzle: :star::star::star::star:
Originality: :star::star::star::star::star:

I gave this level a 5 star it was really good I love it but you need to create some more gameplay/puzzle
