Disappearing decorations
Archive: 13 posts
hey there, I've noticed for quite some time that the decorations you stick on objects can disappear for no apparant reason. I've been getting around this for the past 5 levels of mine now by just replacing the decorations that disappear last thing before i publish, but it's starting to bug me because some decorations are very tricky to place. A decoration normally disappears for me when i do the following things - Glue an object to the object that has a decoration on it. - copy / paste the object (the copy will not bring over all decorations. sometimes it does, sometimes it doesnt) - edit the decorated object in any way (smearing material, vertex tool) This doesn't always happen, and it it doesn't seem to happen to every decorations. I've got absolutely no clue as to why they would do this. anyone know? | 2010-04-06 21:51:00 Author: Duffluc Posts: 402 |
yeah i had this on a level. had to get rid of them in the end. it also happens when you save an object too. | 2010-04-06 21:52:00 Author: trip090 Posts: 1562 |
In my experience, decorations placed on the left side of an object tend to disappear in this way exactly as you describe. This doesn't seem to happen with decorations placed on the right side or the front of an object. I haven't noticed whether decorations placed at the top or bottom of an object will do this also. | 2010-04-06 21:56:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
Are these decorations stuck on the front of the object, or on the sides / top / bottom. I have had various problems with decorations although it seems to be far more stable with decorations on the front of objects now, but on the sides you will often find that they vanish. edit, interesting gilgamesh. I've certainly seen it occur on the RHS as well though. | 2010-04-06 21:57:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
You're both right on the money, Gilgamesh and rtm. The decorations tend to disappear the most when on the left side of the object. I have seen decorations disappear on the right and front too, but for the most part it happens when on the left. What's weird is that they will disappear even you you seemingly haven't touched the object. I'm guessing that this is just some odd glitch that's gotta be worked around, and there's no way of preventing it besides not decorating the sides of your objects. | 2010-04-06 22:03:00 Author: Duffluc Posts: 402 |
Well, I've mostly dealt with simple block-like objects and nothing too complex. My best experimentation came with a sideways door I had made (a thin rectangle basically) with a handle on it (on the left side). When attempting to copy this door, the handle would disappear from the copy. The same would happen when gluing the door to another object. However, if I made a copy and flipped the copy before placing it, the handle would remain where it was (but on the right side now). This was also true if I made copies of the flipped copy. My theory is that something in the way objects are regrouped internally causes decorations to disappear. I can only guess that the game attempts to regroup objects from left to right (possibly from top to bottom also), but since the decoration is evaluated before the object it is "glued" to, it becomes an illegal decoration (since decorations can't exist without an object to glue onto) and thus disappears. Gluing, copying, emitting or modifying the object probably forces the game engine to perform this "regrouping" operation. This is pure guesswork on my behalf though, but it seems to be the most plausible theory. | 2010-04-06 22:12:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
I had this too in my new level. The decorations always disappeared from the left side of the sub doors when captured and I had to replace them all in the level. It isn't new though. It was a problem in the beta many months ago that was reported and they were supposed to have fixed it but it seems to have reappeared again. | 2010-04-06 22:24:00 Author: mistervista Posts: 2210 |
Out of curiousity, what happens if you stick the decoration on the right hand side and then flip horizontally? | 2010-04-06 22:53:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
If you flip the original object horizontally then the decorations don't disappear, I think. That cant be said for horizontally flipped copies though. That's an interesting theory, Gilgamesh. If that's the case, then it looks like a patch would be required to fix the problem... | 2010-04-06 23:02:00 Author: Duffluc Posts: 402 |
SO if you place it on the right, flip it and then copy it, the decorations vanish? This suggests it's the actual position of the decoration when copied that makes a difference (which is kinda surprising IMO, but I can't explain why ). Logically then, you should be able to flip the object so they are on the right, then copy it, then flip it back. | 2010-04-06 23:09:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
that should work, but the problem persists when you put decorations on both sides of the object That's whats really been messing me up lately. Oh well, I guess there's no way around it. | 2010-04-07 02:41:00 Author: Duffluc Posts: 402 |
I get this all the time, it's sooo annoying. I tend to try and use bolts, rather than glue if poss, to attach further items to a decorated object. Plus if I need to make a copy of something, I emit it rather than paste it. Not ideal, but better than recreating the item from scratch every time. | 2010-04-07 19:47:00 Author: Kiminski Posts: 545 |
Thanks for the tips, Kiminski. I didn't really ever think of using tricks like that to get around this glitch! | 2010-04-08 00:04:00 Author: Duffluc Posts: 402 |
