New Manga Character: Kasai

Seeing as Anime/ Manga seems all the rage here with certain members, I thought I'd have a go at creating my own character.

"Kasai" is a Japanese girls name literally meaning "conflagration (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/conflagration)".

Thanks for the kind comments.

Its not drawn unfortunately, but it is original.

As with so many comic characters now, it has been produced in 3D with plenty of Photoshop aftertouches.

The character is new, but I suspect that someone down the ages has produced something similar.

If anyone says they'd give it a chance, that good enough for me!

a new anime character = win win win in my book as anime is awesomes. that front cover looks great and i would watch it too as long as it had subs my manderin japanese isnt yet upto speed.

about the first pic the main focal is nice but the rest seems kinda tacky? try add in a stock bg or something?

for the new one did you draw it? Some of the skin tones are a little too harsh but its still got nice little details and the proportions are good too.

Thanks for this - I know this is your area, so I appreciate the feedback.

I know what you mean about the tackyness of the main image - I might try to simplify it and improve the background. I'm not keen on stock images but I might try them for a bit if I'm struggling.

The new one is done in pretty much using the same programs - just a cartoon render engine instead, so I guess you could say I cheated... again

Good point about skin tones - I'll work on that now.

I was also thinking about doing a desktop wallpaper if anyone is interested?

Well don't expect me to comment on the actual work because I know absolutely nothing about that but what I do know is that to a simple onlooker and anime fan like myself it looks flippin' awesome.

Nice backstory with it too. However I think you have just made a rod for your own back there as I now demand to see and read the entire story. You can either do it as a storyboard on here or as an LBP level. Your choice Rhy, no pressure. Just let me know when it's done.		2010-04-06 22:19:00

rhy my character wont be as good as yours, and like bleach anime had a stuff kon, (mod soul, stuffed lion) i got my inspiration from that for mine, so in this sig is my stuffed one. I called him stuffy (couldnt think of a name)

it looks quite epic

You can really recognize the font you used though...... i was like: "oh right, that font"
don't know if that is a good thing.

and i don't know about the text being all yellow, maybe try white... or other colors? :o

Sorrow - your new sig is really cool.. reminds me of the Simpsons episode... "I shall call him.. Stitchface!". Don't know if anyone has seen that..

Yar - thanks for the feedback - valid as usual. Yeah the font is a bit common, so I'll try something different. As for the font colour, I'll have to play with that - tried white and it looked a bit washed out.

As requested, I am starting to make a storyboard...

This is a front cover I made and was wandering if anyone thought it was any good?

So, I'm going to give my spat of criticism, since I'm like that with everybody [ Even my own work ]

I agree with what monsthar said, about it being cliched.

I have seen dozens of dozens of characters who have this sort of 'angsty past' and their only mission in life is to seek justice for what happened to them back then. Of course, If I just happened to find/gain the power to find justice for something that happened years ago that made me angsty, I'd try and do something about it [ depending on the power I find/gain ] But I would not dedicate my whole life to find justice for my dead parents or something. Its just, too one-sided. If you want, I could offer some advice to change the character, but I want you to ask me that before I start firing off :]

Appearance wise, any appearance is fine, As long as theres diversity among groups of characters, I'm good. The only thing that bothers me is the anatomy of your character on your second post. Try practicing making the anatomy of humans with simple sketches, or something. A great appeal of any work is when proportions are right and equal.

Other than that, the first and third picture looks great :] You sure have talent.

Also, if your making a comic, then it's called manga

If its animated, then its anime.

Just stating that because I don't know wether its a animation or not lol

Thanks for all the comments - I need them to improve, whilst still retaining my own style.

1st attempt at page one has been scrapped - not my usual style and I wasn't happy with it.

I've been working on page 1, although it's not finished...

I've now changed the skin tone a bit to look more realistic.

Yarbone - thanks for the font comment - certainly an improvement on the last!

Her hair is meant to be pretty "spikey", in stark contrast to her "other" side which will have flat hair; however, I will move it about a bit ... in the wind

I can see this thread devolving into numerous unconnected images, so I've created an index on the first post with each page and it's progress (with links to the original high res images), if you feel the need to have a peek.

I've re-done the front cover tonight. The story is more undefined and dark....and less clich?d! I do at least now have an idea in my head of where the character is going and why.

Hmm... still clich?d huh? Well I guess that's what doing marketing does to you!

Only the front cover is 3D looking "game" style. Other than a few highlight pages, the remainder will be 2D.

I wish!

I can draw reasonably well, but not in cartoon style and certainly not at the speed I can produce these at. These are all 3D created images with Photoshop aftertouches to composite and adjust lighting/effects.

looks nice, angle and extent of the arm, and the direction the following flame, and the posture of the body seem odd though, for something as actiony as decapitating a charging brute with a big axe you may wanna put a little more power into the stance and follow threw, also the one leaning on his axe appears to be in front of the big guys axe lol not sure if that's intend but it looks off Otherwise it looks great though, just nit picks2010-04-14 03:27:00
