...whenever I open up a blank level I have no idea what to make. I don't know where to start, what theme I want, and I'm not really that creative. So I was wondering if anyone could help me get started and give me some ideas and stuff.2010-04-05 06:46:00

I have the same problem. For me to make something worthwhile, I need to have a plan before I decide to jump into the editor. My best advice is to plan some of it out first, then enter create mode. A good idea is to sketch some of your ideas out on paper, because there are times where I think of something great, but forget shortly after. Having everything on paper will keep you focused.2010-04-05 07:40:00

Sometimes it helps to sketch whatever you wanna make, makes it easer to do when you build it.

Try and start with simple stuff, don't try to make extra complex objects at the beggining, so you get used to the game and its features/ mechanics.

Think of what kind of level you wanna do, wether its a race, survival, plain plataforming or a story, that helps too.

Making story levels at first helps as well since it kinda "guides" you on what to do doepending on the story.

Hope these tips help.

I've thought about drawing stuff out on a piece of paper but it's hard to conquer that blank page.2010-04-05 21:44:00

Maybe you should try playing some other levels to think about a theme Pirate (how original...), western, cave, fantasy, science-fiction, ...2010-04-05 22:08:00

Well, it's hard to think of ideas for other people, you don't know the strengths or weaknesses or what you enjoy. So, here's a start.

What things do you enjoy other than LittleBigPlanet?

Answer that and we may be able to help you a little more..

^To this question I'd add: What do you like in REAL life? Wallking by a lake, fishing, sports, w/e comes to your mind.
And once you found something you like, add creativity to it, play a lot of levels to get somewhat inspired and stay cool..

You're overthinking it far too much.

I had the same problem when I first sat down to make a level. Your best bet is to just start building something. If you can't even think of a theme, just pick a material that you think looks cool and build an obstacle. It doesn't have to be anything complicated, even if its just a big gap you need to jump over. Then just think to yourself, "what would be fun to do next" if you were playing. Then build the second obstacle. After you get a few jumps built, you will slowly begin to shape the idea in your head. Maybe you'll find another material that looks cool with your first one. Then maybe you'll think of a more concrete theme and start adding in obstacles that compliment the theme specifically.

Even if you end up scraping the "level" you'll still gain all the experience. You aren't learning anything by staring at an empty shell. Just start building until inspiration strikes, and when that happens you'll actually have the skill set to create the level as you picture it.

All I can say is.... Welcome to the club!

Anyways, you could start buy building a random landscape. Don't even think about it. Just plop down a material, pick a random shape, and see what comes out. You spread the shape around and think "Hey, this looks like a moon." or "Hey, this could be some sand dunes." or "HOLY COW JELLO MOUNTAIN!!!**". Ya' know, whatever works.

**Note: I call dibs on making Jell-o Mountian now.

I made a couple of levels already but most get <20 plays and it makes me less motivated I guess.2010-04-06 07:35:00

Well, depending on if you want to create an idea yourself or not, I can always share one with you. I suffer from the exact opposite, I have so many ideas that I never really finish another level, though, I am trying to keep myself to one at the time.

BTW, what's your PSN? I can't see it, and I would like to check out your levels later on, when I get the time.

You can base your creativity on anything- your attitude, the season, and as Chuck_18mp said, what you do in real life.
Then there is this theorie: A fact established by MM is that 99% of the creativity of LBP are dream-based. So, what do you dream about? Was your last nap a dream or a nightmare? What do you wish to do or be someday? These may prove a good medicine to your creativity.
Her is one last theorie: base your ideas off other LBP facts that MM has mentioned. Often, ideas tend to grow from an inspiration.

You can also start from a simple idea. A concept, a theme, a storyline, a song...everything can be a basis.
Then, think about this same idea IN the LBP world. Think about the materials that would fit, the puzzle that would be cool, the characters you could cross related to the initial idea.
Then, open a blank level and start creating. And during you create the first elements, you will have new ideas for the followings.

It is how i create all my levels. To illustrate, my initial ideas for my levels: Zelda, white and black vs color, A black level with only lighting clues, Egypt, ET, LOTR, a giant wheel....

Your problem sounds familiar. I had the exact same problem when I started creating.

Picking a theme is really important and difficult. As other people said, pick a theme that you like, can't help much with that. One thing that helped me was creating from the finish to the start. In one of my levels I started by creating a boss-battle scene and built an environment for it.
