Level reviews, by Oerjeke

Archive: 18 posts

Got a level that needs to be reviewed? Just send a message and I'll try to make it justice by reviewing it.
Pretty simple. So, just send me a PM, write a request on my profile or ask in this topic and I'll make as accurate review as possible.

I will judge the "graphics", gameplay, atmosphere, sound-design, fun-factor and everything else that the level has, but won't add any images unless the creator sends me some (it's a pain in the *ss to take PROPER images and then transfer 'em into my laptop)

So, notify me if you want your level reviewed.

Sure thingy. I'll play the level once I have time...probably tonight. Speaking of my sig and avatar, do you want a Gonzo review (just kidding, gonna' make a proper one)

EDIT:

I'll write the reviews in the order I'm asked to make them. I'll probably have both reviews done tomorrow at some point. I'll play the levels a couple of times and then give my judgement.

Desperados of Tupelo town - by pickled-punk

For the startes, the layout is very, very random and not in a good way. It was sometimes hard to know where I was supposed to go which can be pretty frustrating at times. Also, the switches were most of the time just like "Ok, what did that do?" and the scoreboard was a bit of hard to get (by the way, the zip-line backfired) to since there was a block of dissolving material covering the entry point and at first I had no idea what to do. Another "What am I supposed to do"- moment was at the... spinning contraption from the canyon levels part. I knew I had to activate it, but didn't know how to. Luckily I found a way, but since the arrow pointing to the switch direction was under somewhat blurry water (btw, where can I add the spoiler-tags?) so it was a bit hard to notice at first. But the biggest problem was that the level was pretty boring.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't HATE this level, not at all. I've played a lot worse levels, but this level had too many flaws in it to be enjoyable.

However, I liked that you tried to make those "secret" places to hide some prizes, but you should really get the basics properly done before moving on to the prizes.

In conclusion, not too good level, but certainly not horrible.

Looks: 3/5
Sound: 2/5
Gameplay: 3/5
Re-play value: 1/5

I gave it 2 stars.

Crypt's Canyon - by Dr_Vab

Wow, this is a really nice level. Nice platforming, good visuals and good use of the physics engine. This level was challenging and I died a couple of because of my clumsiness. This level really reminded a Mm level. My only two negative opinions were that it was too short and the music at the start. I'm really getting sick of that tune
Another thing that I liked was the fact that it had no water in it. Just because we have water, doesn't mean that we need to put it everywhere and this level did fine without a single drop of it.

The story wasn't obviously a big part of the level, which is kinda sad since I like story driven levels, but the gameplay makes up for it.

In conclusion, a great level, the story is a bit lacky/not existing but the gameplay makes up for it.

Looks: 5/5
Sound: 3/5
Gameplay: 5/5
Re-play value: 4/5

I gave it 5/5 + <3

Can't wait for the sequel, man *thumbs up*

Thanks for the quick review! I'm glad you enjoyed, and yes I know it was quite short it was because of the thermo, but the sequel should be quite a bit longer, I have a lot of unused ideas from the first one that I'm planning to use.

Once again thanks for the review

Pardon me for not being too good with my deadlines, but since weekends are the only days that I have time to play, it's not too easy to play the levels, make the reviews and make my own levels in just 2-3 days. I hope you understand, but still, I'm sorry. The reviews (that I promised to do last Monday -.-) are coming out this weekend.

World 1-4 by shebhnt

Not being such a big Super Mario fan myself, I'm definetly the target audience for this level, but it didn't stop me from enjoying it. Of course - as usual - the level has it's pros and cons.

Let's start with the pros:
The visuals were nice and really gave a feeling that it was a tributary level for the Super Mario series. I'm glad that you didn't use the plasma balls as those fire-rods and you even used the front view camera, which was - in my opinion - a very good choice. Instead, you used a "pixelated" version just like in the original game. And you definetly get a plus for putting Toad in there...giving me the finger...just like in the original (it's true, check for yourself)

And now we come to the unpleasant part, the cons.

The first thing that I knew I was going to mention in this review, was the use of music. I won't lie to you, it was quite terrible. Maybe I'm just knit-picking since I'm a very musical person, but that doesn't change the fact that the music was certainly unfitting. The second thing that I didn't like, was the fact that it was too easy. Now don't get me wrong, I HATE frustrating levels (even though some people worship the creators who make themselves pull out their own hair from anger) but this was just way too easy and short. And now, for the last thing I didn't like (which I'm pretty sure is just knit-picking) is the bridge breaking speed. It's just way too slow.

And that's my opinion of the level "World 1-4"
In a nutshell:
"A very good looking tribute to the world's most famous plumber, which unfortunately suffers from the lack of challenge and fitting music"

Graphics: 5/5 - Very good looking and fitting
Sound: 1/5 - Bad. Just bad. The music should definetly be changed
Gameplay: 3/5 - Nothing special, but it works
Replay value: 3/5 - A very quick level, that is fun to play.

Overall: 3.5 out of 5

Heya I seem to be having trouble getting plays/feedback/review on my newly posted level series, called Frozen in Time. There are three full levels done and they are EXTREMELY long (the post alone telling about it was a few pages long, in the level thread). If you have time, and if you like open-ended puzzle/platformer Metroid-style levels, I would love a review =)2010-04-09 18:45:00

sweet, thanks =) If you run low on time, I need feedback most on parts 2/3. They are the ones that are recently made, and you can start from either pt 1 or pt 2, meaning you can choose to skip the first one although it would fill in more of the story.2010-04-09 22:16:00

I took a little peek at part 1 and it might take some time. I don't wanna rush it.

Will take a look at that. And I'll decide which parts I want to review. If the level seems like it's story driven or tries to make a story, I'll add it to the review. But as I said, I'll take a look.
