Explore old temple ruins in the critter cave in search for lost treasure!
Hello everyone

I just put my demo of critter cave online.
This was just some fooling around with the 3d glitch tool and some other stuff that I wanted to try out and it evolved over time into a short level.

I feel it's pretty fun and starts off with some nice puzzle gameplay and evolves into a climbing / platforming / exploring gameplay near the second half.

I'd love to hear some opinions on how this turned out because I'm planning to use some skills I learned here in my upcoming level based around saw (which is going to be awesome).

Features:

+ 3d background while climbing / hanging on a rope to give a sense of scale and depth
+ rope grabbing feature
+ nice puzzle in the beginning
+ some platforming gameplay involving rotating wheels
+3d foreground graphics to show off an old bridge near the end

not all sound effects have been added so far, but I 'm planning to do this in the near future together with adding a giant boss battle involving a big squid (if the level scores decent enough).

thanks in advance

Hi Freddy

First off, the reason no one is reviewing this game (at a guess) is you need to get the ball rolling by reviewing other peoples F$F games.

There were alot of really neat touches to this game, it was INTUATIVE which is a massice bonus, never once was I stuck at what I was supposed to do, yet puzzles werent too easy, they make you think, but not get annoyed with them. LOve the use of cameras to show what each lever/button etc does.
I could list all the parts I really liked, but that would be boring for others to read.
(was writing this as my partner played, we now got stuck, and have to admit defeat. The room with the two giants gogs, where you have to pull the two levers to get them rotating, the sting at the top right which I assume you have to grab to get up has NOTHING to grab onto, its really hard to get on the cog anyway, and then to have to keep trying to see if there is anything there takes alot of time, must have tried 20 times, sorry about that.

REALLY nice game, really enjoyed it, but because it cant be finished, I only gave it 4 stars, do let me know what I was doing wrong, or wether the game indeed IS broke.

wow thanks I'll check out the last scene, maybe something broke or it is indeed a bit too tricky.

just wondering, did you like the 3d glitch effect in the cave with the rope ?

Yeah the 3d background is cool, as for the rope, it was my least favorite part. Its not origional, and I find annoying (LOL, I bet that wasnt the answer you were hoping for ?) ((I assume you mean the rope part where you swing across monkey bar stylie right?

EDIT, sorry forgot to say, could you F4F TANKINATOR please.

yes indeed that's the scene lol :-) Like I said , this whole level actually started from a simple experiment with the 3d glitch. Out of that, this level somehow was created :-)
I wanted to try that glitch to create a sense of depth to the rope scene to make it more exciting.

I will make the last scene a bit easier with some sponge material to grab instead of thin air rope.

I'll play your f4f level as well of course :-)

Very good level,it could use alittle more detail through. The part with the wheel and the fire,i think the fire was too close to the grabbable area so most times trying to jump to the rope i ended up dieing.Besides that the level was awesome, and the puzzles were great. The 3d parts were pretty awesome too.2010-04-09 05:07:00

-Loved the vine decorations at the start.
-Could have used a shortcut on the second chest/switch.
-When it said use rope, I didnt see the horiztonal one. Iwas drawn to the colourful decoration and tried to grab it.
-I rope swing after the cogs looked nice. I would have preferred even spacing on the second cog. (ex. sponge, sponge, fire, repeat) as mixing it up really put me off and I didn't notice the 2 sponge parts until my third attempt. haha. But that's totally up to you as it is a personal preference really.
-Bridge in 3D was the most impressive feature, looked really nice. Worth the play just to see that.
-Some of the early platforms are not difficult to see, but could be much clearer with more lighting/stickering.

I look foward to the full level.

Played your level yesterday. Promising stuff.
-Effective background visuals. Nice structures.
-Well executed & not to hard puzzles.
-It had a sort of Tomb Raider-vibe to it. Good pacing.
-In places the caves felt a little empty, perhaps you could add some more details. (decorations, stickers?)

I'll be certain to check it out again, when you add the boss.

If you are up for F4F, it would be great if you could check out one of my levels.

Good level overall, but could easily be made better. 5 stars for effort, and for making a good level!

-On the second chest (The one to reach the switch after swinging on the chandeliers) there is nothing to keep it from falling down, which would make it impossible to continue.
-It'd be better to keep a consistent pattern on the wheels.
-The 3-D layer glitch was handled nicely.
-The caves in certain areas feel incredibly empty, so added decorations/stickers would help. (like what pickled-punk said)

Keep up the good work, and I'm sure to check the full version!
