Why is everyone getting the YLOD?

Archive: 16 posts

I mean, practically 20% who post on these forums regularly, have had the YLOD...Does that mean this problem is getting more and more common?
(And please, explain to me what the cause of the YLOD is, because Google doesn't want to load for me today)

People who can't play PS3 typically go online to post about their gripes, which means you'll most likely be hearing from them on their favorite gaming forums/blogs/websites. I don't think you can say with any certainty that it's increasing or decreasing by analyzing the posts here, or on any other forum for that matter. If you take a look at this study (https://www.squaretrade.com/htm/pdf/SquareTrade_Xbox360_PS3_Wii_Reliability_0809.pdf), you'll find that 10% of PS3 users reported a problem within the first 2 years.

If I recall correctly it was a heat problem... After a few years the dust builds up, yeah? 2010-04-04 04:36:00

The problem does relate mainly to the original 60GB version... which we had.

The issue is an overheating problem as the original 60GB models ran a lot hotter than the newer versions. Eventually, together with dust accumulation and time, the heat causes the main CPU to become unattached leading to YLOD.

There are other reasons for YLOD but this is the most common I have become aware of.

Weirdly, our original 60GB version went down with Blue Ray reading problems and not YLOD.

TBH, knowing about YLOD, I'm kinda glad we have a newer model.

Kinda miss the PS2 emulator though..

WARNING: RANT AHEAD:

The YLoD (And RRoD) are both caused because Sony and Microsoft decided to go the Eco-Friendly cheapo route and use low-quality lead-free solder, which didn't work because it melted at a lower temperature then lead solder, which means the processor falls off the board = trashed console = wasted plastic and perfectly fine console parts. Sony got smart and went the GOOD Eco-Friendly route by using high quality Lead-Free solder. which killed the YLoD in newer models. Microsoft stayed the same + EPIC FAIL OF CONSOLE AND ENVIROMENT.
Bye.

I'm getting really scared for my PS3,
I have the original 60Gb PS3 and have had it almost since it came out. The scary part is I live in Austraia, which has a lot of dust and a lot of heat. Still it hasn't died so far

Weirdly, our original 60GB version went down with Blue Ray reading problems and not YLOD.

Blu-ray problems topped the category types of complaints for the original PS3s. The overheating had little to do with dust and more to do with the cheap coolant gel applied to the CPU drying and eventually cracking, leaving the processing unit with minimal cooling protection. That's my understanding, at least.

Go buy the extended warranty (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=101551&categoryId=8198552921644628396&storeId=10151&langId=-1) if you've purchased your PS3 in the last 6 months! I would recommend going the full 4 year extension, but that's just me. Your PS3's limited warranty is moot after a year.
