The Great Flood

I am thinking of making a level based on my knowledge of mythology. It will be based on a mixture of Indian and Japanese Mythology. The level although, takes place in Japan.

So this is how the story basically goes:

You play the role of a fisherman. While fishing at the docks, your line starts getting tugged. You reel your line in, and you catch a fish! Suddenly, the fish begs you not to eat him. It tells you that if you take care of him, it will save your life from a Great Flood that will occur in a week. The Great Flood will destroy all life.

You take the fish home and it speaks of the cause of the Flood. The fish says that the flood that will occur, is the fault of "Susanoo" the Japanese God of the Sea and Storms. It tells you that the God challenged his sister, "Amaterasu" the Japanese Goddess of the Sun, to a friendly battle. Susanoo won and Amaterasu loss. The Goddess hid from all beings due to her embarrassment.

As a punishment, Susanoo was forced to leave the Heavens by their creator "Izanagi" Susanoo was so enraged, that he created a Gigantic Flood to destroy all mankind.

After the story, the fish tells you to gather supplies and make a boat. Once the flood comes and the water spreads , the fish will pull the boat high into the mountains where and thus you will survive with some "Seeds of Life" to re-establish life on Earth.

*How did you get those seeds? From the "Tree of Life" of course!*


Did you get any of that? Well if you didn't, then here's a few generalized statements:


You find a magic fish.

It tells you a Great Flood is coming and it will wipe out Mankind.

The fish tells you that the flood was cause by a Japanese God and Goddess. And, that they challenged each other to a battle.

The Goddess loss and hid due to embarrassment.

Susanoo was punished and banned from the Heavens by Izanagi.

Susanoo was enraged and then created a Gigantic Flood that will destroy all life and will occur in a week.

The fish advises you to make a boat.

Once you do, he will pull your boat up into the mountains once the Flood comes.

Then you will use the "Seeds of Life" to re-establish life on Earth.

(You get the seeds from the Tree of Life which you will go to at one point in the level.)		2010-04-03 10:21:00

The flood is a myth that is told in many cultures. It is well known through Noah's Ark in the biblical terms. Take a look at the "Flood Myth" link in my second post.

It may take me more than a month to finish this level. So don't expect any news from this levels progress anytime soon. Oh, I still don't have The Islands DLC so I'll have to start next Saturday. That DLC is crucial to this level.2010-04-03 11:21:00

Too complicated to understand? or to make? Because if you think this is complicated to make, then patience and hard work is what's needed. Like for example BulletBill's The Great Labyrinth project, now that will take a lot of effort, but it can be done.

This project sounds epic. The story alone will make this worth playing, and if you can pull off a ZEN vibe it would really make the level.

This sounds great! I'm always looking forward to Japanese-type levels. I recommend Sha-Ja's Asian levels for more inspiration.

Thanks 3B. Sha-Ja's levels will work really awesome for some more inspiration for my level design.

EDIT: I did not want to make another post, so here's a small update for everyone:

So far I have a lot of notes and sketches for the level design. I have also added more parts to the story, which is a secret for now.... I still haven't got The Islands DLC, but for sure I'll get it when the weekend hits. That's it for now.		2010-04-07 07:43:00

*Ahem*, well so far here's what I got:

The dock where you fish. There are moving waves so don't worry about that. I also got the fishing rod in and what-not. I have also added in the island that you take a small fisherman's boat to, to get the "Seeds of Life". There is also a fish market near the docks.

This is what I'm going to add in:
The town - I am not sure how to make it look like an old type of Japan look, you know before Japan got all techy. Any ideas?
The mountain - Not sure what to name it, but it is unclimbable. So, you'll have to wait for the flood to come so it can raise your boat up and the fish will tow you towards the mountain top.
Now for the flood - I was thinking of a huge wave? I am not sure exactly how its going to lift the boat up.
Building the boat - When you're on the island where you get the seeds, you'll do some challenges and task to get the materials you need for the boat.

And that's about it, although I had more written down on paper, which I can't seem to find.		2010-04-12 09:54:00

as for naming the mountain, if it doesnt name it within the myth then you could call it "Yama" which simply means mountain in japanese

attach a piston to the fish which in turn is attached to the boat by an rod. time everything right so that the water(blue gas?) moves up at the right time along w/ the fish and the boat

An Update!:

So I know you guys/girls, have been waiting for this level, which right now looks like a 1000 pieced Jigsaw puzzle with the all the pieces scattered on the floor. Okay what that basically meant is that this level isn't coming out anytime soon. I've been sketching puzzles, obstacles, level design, and much more this past month.

If you guys did not know, I lost a lot of work on this level because it got corrupted a while back. So I had to restard with a small piece of back-up. So just be patience and I'll try to make this level EPIC. I'll post some pictures soon!		2010-05-30 09:20:00
