Doodle World
Archive: 12 posts
Have you ever sat at school and doodled absentmindedly on what was meant to be your maths hwk? What if your doodle people could actually move around and explore your pen made world? Well they can now thanks to LBP! Im gunna create a world of ink. I must say the inspiration also came from the ZEN level. Any ideas or ppl willing to help? :] | 2010-04-03 07:46:00 Author: Alismuffin Posts: 1328 |
Well your level will mostly be made of cardboard (mostly graphing paper) Also maybe you can make the players use a pen to "draw" stuff to overcome obstacles. Like the concept in Jeff's level ZEN, when you use the brush to paint the next part of the level on the scroll. A lot of ideas for your level will be found in ZEN. That's all I got for now. So you got a lot of ideas from your inspiration already. EDIT: I got another idea! Maybe, you can use special colored ink that will lead you to secrets in the level or whatever you want to use it for. Might be a little hard to do, but you are very excellent in mechanics so I'm sure it's no problem for you! | 2010-04-03 08:25:00 Author: TheNerd Posts: 840 |
Hey ali985, This sounds like a cool idea! I'm flattered that ZEN inspired you, but I can see the aesthetics of this project taking a life of its own. Instead of a blank, antiqued canvas, it would be awesome if you could somehow recreate a notebook-type background. Fortunately, there are tons of stickers to help you achieve this look. For instance, you can create the illusion of a loose leaf notebook paper by adding holes on the side with the "shadow circle" sticker, and you can even add the post-it notes and coffee stain stickers for an authentic look. As for the lines, you can use the grid pattern technique Arrestor used in his level Trapped Transition (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=23175-Trapped-Transition-*Spotlighted*) to make it look like graphing paper. However, I think it would look better if it has the wide/college-ruled effect of a notebook paper. You can do this by layering thin horizontal strips of blue material in front of a crisp white material like basic polystyrene. Red vertical lines would make cool left and right margins. These don't have to be just for looks. The lines can serve as architectural elements for gameplay. For instance, the thin blue horizontal lines can be on a thick layer so a sackperson can walk on it, and the red marginal lines can serve as walls. As for doodles, you can certainly borrow the ink platforming technique I used in ZEN. Instead of making chunky figures though, you should emphasize the pen strokes of the doodles by making them thin. For example, just focus on the outlines like I did on the mountains in my level. You can also emphasize the sketchiness by using doodle stickers behind the platform strokes like the crosshatch sticker. I also like the idea of doodling as an escape to math. I do love math, but it can be boring sometimes . That said, I think you should mix some numbers and functions along with the doodles. Numbers on thick layers can make great platforming challenges like rOckalOvEer x73 did in A curious sack (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=23721-A-curious-Sack). Giant pencils, erasers, crayons, protractors, rulers, pins, and various other school supplies could also make interesting obstacles and platforming sections. I hope you find this helpful! yea! definately gunna be made out of paper materials. Oh yes i thought of that too XD! like draw up a car or a platform. also use an eraser to erase doors. yea thats a good idea! like different coloured pens do different stuff and you have to use the right pens for the right places. thanks alot! | 2010-04-03 08:59:00 Author: Alismuffin Posts: 1328 |
thanks so much for all ur advice jeffcu8! i will most definately use those ideas and yes i was going to go with the random numbers/equations all over the place, perhaps even as evil creatures? >D i was also considering making my own custom switches so that they fit in with the theme. this would be done w/ outlines, a loose bolt and a magnetic key | 2010-04-03 09:07:00 Author: Alismuffin Posts: 1328 |

I like it ! I always imagined numbers to have sinister personalities... And the custom switches idea sounds just as great. I have yet to play your Swamplands level, but it seems like switch-based gameplay is your style. I'm really interested to see what you come up with, so get creatin' doodlin'! Popping the evil brain of 8, jeffcu28 Shouldn't you be popping 7? Since 7-8-9! | 2010-04-03 18:54:00 Author: Silver39 Posts: 1703 |
Hey Ali985! It seems that you are really with all your levels such as the magical forest and the sackula series, that you have not been making this awesome idea for a level. It's really annoying as i've just had a brilliant idea that I could do for my series of levels. unfortunately, it is sort of the same as this idea, except that you would be the main character, and you would fight and work your way through a page in a workbook in different classes. would I be able to make this idea? Or would it seem a bit too much like pilfering your idea? | 2010-04-30 17:53:00 Author: The Forgotten Posts: 316 |
I just had a thought, how about having different writing tools throughout the level, and by grabbing them you create the drawings, which are what you walk on, making you seem like a doodle! You could hide something like a red crayon that would make a secret area be unlocked, or perhaps make a bridge over some traps. The only thing I could see limiting this is that the doodle stickers are mostly chalk, but I assume you could just make them with black material or by painting black dots. | 2010-05-02 23:21:00 Author: Archy1121 Posts: 8 |
@The Forgotten: go for it! i may get around to making this level but im not sure. If u want we could both make the level together? Two heads are better than one! and i have a great way worked out so as we can both work on it. up to u tho | 2010-05-03 04:54:00 Author: Alismuffin Posts: 1328 |

Similar to my suggestion, but I'll let it slide.... | 2010-05-05 10:59:00 Author: TheNerd Posts: 840 |
Perhaps you could use stick men as enemies? And the platforms would be really random shapes. Maybe have ink splotches in places that spin round and you can grab them to get over gaps. | 2010-05-13 17:08:00 Author: Unknown User |
