Dimension Warptrip090
http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/6502/aphoto10.jpgDo you think there are other worlds out there, beyond our dimension? What if there was a way to get there? What if there was a machine that could take you on a new adventure in another dimension?
Hello everybody! I'm here with a new level, an action adventure/puzzler that will satisfy those gaming taste buds. Take an adventure to another dimension in the Dimensional Warp Alteration In Normality system to a world without colour, a world filled with puzzles and action. Lets just hope nothing goes wrong...

I'm willing to do any amount of F4F (just don't go mad and give me 20 levels to give feedback for). Just enjoy this level and all it has to offer!

Have fun!

Any level called "Dimension Warp" by somebody with "trip" in their name gets my attention, as I love surreal type levels, so I just had to try this.

For the first few minutes I wondered about the name, as it seemed like it was just plasma, machines and such (well built and cool looking, but unexpected). And then - poof - I'm in crazy outline world! I absolutely love the design of this part. I'm a huge fan of seeing things like this that are both simple and complex at the same time. The fact that I took a second trip back there was an added bonus, too. I probably would have gotten the high score, but on the first race, the booster thing that shoots me up (in the warp world) broke and wouldn't turn or fire. I was just stuck inside of it as it pointed up so I wasted a bunch of time. I explodified myself and it fixed itself, but maybe there's some sort of glitch there that may need looking in to. My only other complaint was the part with the mario-like horizontal platforms on circular tracks. They seemed pretty slow and tedious, and it was the only part of the level where I felt "oh man, not another one of these jumps". Overall 5 stars from me, and I don't 5 star too many levels!

As far as F4F, I'd love you to try my Frozen in Time series, but be warned they are extremely long open-ended levels. You can save your 'progress' often but they are several hours long, so I won't be offended if you decide to pass on them

thanks tanarri69 for the feedback!

i am dumbstruck at the bug you found in the circular booster. it doesn't make sense how it would happen as i've never experienced it. but i'll still look into it as it seems pretty major (to me anyway).

as for the platforms, although i've never found them slow, i might spice them up.

again, thanks for the feedback. i'll play your levels as soon as i can but don't be surprised if it takes me a while to get back to you.

Hello. I've just played your level. It looks amazing. It must have been a big logically work. The outline world is crazy, and it is very cool. How many hours have you spend on it?

I was just stucked in the first race. The place where you get fired up. It's excactly the same place as tanarri. You must deal with this..

Anyway I rated it 5 stars, and I'll give it the chance another time. Would you like to try my level based on the Dragon Ball series? It's called Dragon Ball - First Book. I've made a topic about it in here. Check my creations.

I just got through playing your level and I mean... wow!

Cool Things:

- Everything!
- I really like the look and feel of the place before you jump dimensions. The effects on everything from as small as the rising floor panels to as big as the huge teleporter are just masterfully put together.
- The other dimension is just as vibrant in its own way, I really dig the aesthetic. At first I was afraid that the platforming would be too simple but I was soon proven wrong!
- The theatrics behind behind the major teleporter made me giddy
- Even your minor teleporters are the best teleporters I've come across so far

Suggestions:

- I really wish I could offer something more constructive, but your level is so well put together it's just really hard to find something to suggest. I did think the gravity sections at the very start were kinda unnecessary, just there for the sake of being there. Once you get into your level though, you don't really remember how you get there, you just enjoy the ride! : D

I didn't experience the problem with the booster that tanarri and ghik did, it all went smoothly for me.

Bottom line: Easily 5-starred and hearted. Fantastic!

Since you're doing F4F, can you check out my level "Sackboy 2109: A Dystopian Tale"?

thanks Elijah and ghik16!

i still don't understand the booster bug. if someone could run through exactly what you did and what happened, it might help me out.

@Elijah
those gravity things was just me mucking about. the level started out as me experimenting with concepts and glitches but it evolved into a full blown level.

i'll address this booster bug although i may just have to replace it.

UPDATE - BUG FIX

fixed the booster bug. seems that if you grabbed the bottom, it would fire, you'd stay where you were and it would wait for you to get out before it would reset, because of the nature of the logic. fixed it so you get in, it fires and then it resets.

thanks for bringing this bug to my attention!

Hello Trip,
I played your level today and made some small notes.

First of all, I like how most of your interactive stuff works,
Your version of the grabswitch works nicely and its more than often only the start of something else,
a platform that raises, a new pathway.. etc its nice.. you really know something has changed pulling the switch.
I like how your dimension warp machine works, its a little long but since you only see it happen two times its okay.

The b/w parts where a little simple, sometimes when you fell down you could see small pieces of dark matter.
(If you make darkmatter really small it becomes invissible, make it thin layer and hold l1/l2 and glue, this way the object will float and the dm wont be vissible)

Just when the b/w part got interesting you pulled me out by the warp device malfuntion..
that was done very well, as you now really want to fix the teleporter.
(yes.. deminsion warp device teleporter machine thingy)
I liked that it crashed and you had to fix the machine.

I would suggest you should experiment a little more with the lighting in your level (or next level).
Also, but this is personally.. I would like to know why I am playing around with a warp device, and why it made me go to the b/w world.
The gameplay is very basic but I am sure the somewhat younger lbp-ers should really like it!

gave it 4 stars and marked it fun.

If you have the time in the near future,
I will be releasing 3 new levels this sunday/monday, So if you would like to check at least one of them out I would really appreciate it!

cheers,

Luos

thanks luos for the feedback!

i didn't realise that the dark matter was visible but ill sort it out. as for why you're testing a big machine - there is no back story. your just there, testing it.

ill look out for your levels next week.

Positives:
I loved your innovative use of piston physics in the high gravity area! The sound effects are also very well done. I liked the dimension warp machine a lot. The progression of the little parts coming online was really nice. I have never seen anything like the outline black/white platforming area before! What a wonderful concept! I also think the length of gameplay was just about perfect.

Suggestions:
The ending seemed to be a little abrupt. Not sure what I was expecting, perhaps a trip back to the normal dimension to end things?

Bugs:
In the black outline portion I was able to get underneath the flipper object in one of the cresent circles, in the first race portion. I got crushed by it

Concepts: 5/5:
Machinery: 5/5:
Gameplay 4/5:

Overall: 5/5+H and hearted you. Loved this level.

thanks dragontamer!

the black and white anti-colour trick is quite an old one. search "anti-color" and you'll find some great levels! ever since the way to make it was patched, it seems to have disappeared...

as for being crushed, i suppose it was lucky that a checkpoint was nearby.

the ending was going to be that you go back to the normal dimension but the thermo overheated. one day i might be able to make some room and fit it in though.

thanks again for the feedback!

hey man. I just got through your level. It was very fun! I've seen the black and white effect you used before in previous levels, but you did a really good job of implementing it here. I like that there was also a reason behind the black and white. It added a lot of depth to the level, bringing it from a simple platformer to an all out adventure. Your use of the gravity glitches, the combined materials and use of lights as platforms was also real neat. Seeing those glitches used well is rare but it really makes a level shine when it's done right. I gave your level 5 stars. It was great fun, thanks!2010-04-03 19:26:00

@Elijah
those gravity things was just me mucking about. the level started out as me experimenting with concepts and glitches but it evolved into a full blown level.

Unfortunately the beginning felt very much like this to me... demonstrations, moving into menial tasks, basic platforming. But I gotta say even though I was initially a little bored... you got some really smooth mechanics moving behind the scenes... I LOVED the switch that slid down the left-side wall... steps appeared with lights and sound... flashing on touch... very very slick and nice! It really made me feel like you skated in the beginning.

The machine itself is very nice but personally feel the start-up sequence was over-dramatized, especially the second time... it's long, and the player is anxious. Just a thought! I think it is brilliant the two races are the way to score in this level... My first play through I completed with a score of 0.!!! I absolutely had to play again! It was mandatory! That's your bread and butter here... that and your very very very very cool effect. I liked it a lot-- so will lots of others. I would have liked to see some 'visionary' gameplay elements to match your 'visionary' design... but I want the world, don't mind me! Nice work Sir... You got yourself a winner of a level. I am really looking forward to what comes next... no pressure!

It's not necessary but if youd like to check out my latest level the thread is here https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=24744-The-MUPPET-Level

thanks Gravel for the feedback.

it is weird for me how a level which started out as me seeing what i could do with a mechanical futuristic theme evolved into what it is now. that said, without the beginning part, i feel that part of the gameplay fun would be lost. you've got to get to the machine somehow and through gravity chambers and mechanical zones seemed fitting.

thanks again for the feedback, really helpful! i'll definitely check out your Muppet level - i love the Muppets!

Ditto. Perhaps this section could be cut down or moved into a separate introduction level, since I think it adversely affects the replay value of the main part of the level, which would be the black and white 'anti-color' section.

On the subject of the anti-color section, there's a lot of other materials you can use besides the gas-glitched sponge. Come check out my collection of anti-color materials to add a bit more variety to that section, for example, you could use different materials to give different visual cues, so it's clearer as to whether you're supposed to grab something or not.

thanks Aya but i'd rather keep the anti-colour what it is - anti-colour; plain black and white. the "demonstrations" at the beginning i feel need to stay there as without them there's a large gap of how you get to the machine in this lab. although the focus is on the black and white, you can still enjoy playing with the bombs and jumping on light. it adds to the atmosphere of the setting, inside this lab, and that helps make a major jump from a futuristic setting to a simplistic world with no colour. i've tried the level without the beginning and it's not the same. there's no fun or atmosphere. but thanks for the input all the same. 2010-04-04 18:10:00

What I'm suggesting wouldn't alter that, it would still be plain black and white. Might be easier to show you rather than attempt to explain.

i'll take you up on that offer.

So basically, that board I gave you is a material to gas color matrix. The glitch was that you take a material, gas it, capture it, then optionally change the gas color, and delethalize.

Problem is it was only possible to do between patches 1.07 (Roquefort) and 1.11 (Gouda), and was fixed in 1.12 (Cornish Yarg), and it's no longer possible to patch back to any version between those, so that's pretty much all I've managed to find so far.

Just played through this one. I had a blast. I really liked the futuristic stuff in the beginning, and I thought your machine was very cool. I actually really enjoyed watching the start up sequence. I also always liked the anti color levels, and I think you did a great job of implementing that look. I'm sorry, I don't really have any constructive criticism though, as I pretty much enjoyed everything. Great work!!!

Could you give me some feedback on my LBP Paint Factory?

i've updated the level a bit. thanks to Aya and the materials they gave me, i've made the anti-color sections a little more interesting. everything your supposed to grab is now thick and black and pretty obvious. plus, some things are now un-grabbable. also used another stitch pattern for certain things. hope you like!

In the level description you have spelt "our's" when it should be just "ours"
Teleporters are coolies. Nice look about them.
After the "modified gravity" section there are some platforms that rise up. How did you make them? They look awesome! This was the most impressive part of the level for me.
I would paint over the checkpoints, as brown wood didn't match the style of the level.
Loved those silo type things. I -had- to take the decorations off to see how they were made.
Ha! The quick piston is a lovely idea to hide the ugly red X. I might have to incorporate this into my level.
Warp room looked a little cluttered with different coloured decorations compared with the simplicity of the first part of the level.
The ferris wheels got boring because they were too slow for my taste. That whole section would benefit from a faster pace.
I got no points on the first race. Maybe extend the limit?
At one point there is a large spinning circle. It was hard to see that it was spinning at all, maybe add a little black cutout shape to indicate movement to the player?
The second phase of black and white was better because there was more interesting gameplay involved. I liked swinging and waiting for the gates to open.

Could have done with a bit more story, (for example why did you go to that dimension/etc) for some motivation.
But big machine sequence was coolio, and sound effects were used well also.
Nice level overall, fun level for some relaxing platforming.

thanks for the feed back, midnight_heist!

i didn't know if it was our's or ours. i flipped a coin in the end. but i'll change it to ours. those platforms are quite easy to make. if you take a spotlight and shrink the radius to practically 0, it goes all force field like. as for the cluttered warp room, the machine's supposed to look busy and futuristic but not cluttered. i might clear it up. but thanks again for the feedback!

So I just finished your level and I really did enjoy it a lot. I thought that both "worlds" were done very well. I really liked the overly dramatic warp sequence. I wouldn't have go faster for anything.

My suggestions are that the beginning is a little long or it feels a little irrelevant. I think it has great mechanics, don't get me wrong. The way all of it works is amazing but I felt like the best part of this level was the actual transportation idea and the anti color world. I would maybe change the beginning so it fits more with the whole "other world" theme. Maybe it could feature some scientists explaining how the machine works, or if the things you have to do were things you had to do later in the anti color world.

I still really liked the level and gave it a five stars. If you have a chance can you check out my Retro Retribution level? (link is in my sig)

Hey, I gave it a shot and thought it was a fun level. I haven't had LBP that long and I'm pretty sure the anti colour glitch was passed it's peak when I joined in so I haven't see much of it. I thought it looked really nice and simple in the other dimension, I'm not sure on how things work exactly in the glitch so I can't really comment. The platforming in those parts was nice but very easy, that's my only complaint, I'd have liked to see more challenging parts but that's just personal preference. The incinerator bit I thought maybe add a few candle flames to when it's burning the fuses to make it look more fiery. But other than that I didn't notice anything else. Seems you've worked out the bugs and any flaws with the feedback you've received from others. 2010-04-17 23:24:00

i've always wanted to do a simple, non-challenging platformer and using anti-colour seemed a good way to present it in an interesting way.

So I'm leaving F4F. B)

From start; I think that you did a really good job on the inside bit with all the machinery, but the bomb bit seemed just a teeny bit empty. :/
The layering of decoration was nice, and the warp bit was cool - perhaps replace the fairy lights with something else? Or cover them up with something.
The no color world was cool, but just a teeny bit bland, because even though there isn't any color, there could still be decoration. I also would've liked some bomb puzzles in this bit as well.
Going back to the building was fun to do and was really original. Destroying the fuses was pretty cool and I liked destroying them in an incinerator. > Kinda like Portal.
At the end, it seemed like you didn't have any thermo left and had to put the scoreboard in as an afterthought. Oh well. You could do a sequel?

Anyway, I gave the level a 5stars, because it was really fun and the visuals were cool.

Great level. The echo part is something I have never experienced in LBP before and the teleporting parts are as radical as the explosive ones in Poms' "The Bunker 2". The visuals are neatly polished but I would like to see a bit more by adding a few more decorations and materials. Overall this level deserves 5 stars and a heart.

Play and F4F "The Hero Chronicles LV3 Action Mansion" when you get a chance.

After all, it was very entertaining. The start area with it's tech-zones low garvity, gravitay etc. were nice and interesting. I'm not sure how you realise the "jump higher effect" but it's cool stuff! The warp enginge is really cool. I love the effect when it's engaging power. The other dimension looks awesome too - I'm not sure if this style is soooo new, but the look is always great and "different" from most of the other community-levels. The back-warp during the engine-malfunction comes very unexpected :-) it's a great idea to bring more action into this level. The engine where you have to "incinerate" two blocks is great!

But there is also a "but" in this feedback: I feel a bit lost in this world because I don't know much about this other dimension - I prefer levels with a bit more depth of story to get more in touch with the adventure. And the scoreboard comes absolutely unexpected and without a great showdown or some sort of a "story-" or "level-finish". This scoreboard-area is very boring in my view. It could be much more impressive, maybe with some sort of dimension-shifting color-fading - b/w to color and back to b/w, etc etc...

So far as I can see, the tech side of this level is very nice - I just miss a bit more of a story-line there.

Nevertheless, great work!:star::star::star::star:star and <3

A good, original level this one. Visually everything looked crisp, and in some areas very impressive too. I liked the way you used the old anticolour glitch to represent the abstract dimension and how it contrasted with the "real" world areas. The teleport system was a cool touch throughout, especially the huge teleport room where you made great use of sound/lighting/global fx to show the "jump" to the abstract world. Unfortunately I suck at platforming, so I never reached any of the closing race gates with time left on the clock, but still it was fun trying. Anticolour world felt very surreal and disorienting, just the way a strange dimension should be. I didn't like the way the level ended though, still stuck in the abstract dimension, as I was expecting to return "home" after completing that section. It would have ended the story more conclusively I think. I also felt maybe you could do a bit more with the gravity manipulation, as the first section of the level felt more like a showcase for the gravity glitch rather than offering any challenge. Of course, this section was well implemented as a showcase, but you could have ran with the ball a little further I thought. (I know of a cool enhancement for that gravity glitch, which can get you massive airtime, so just PM me if you want to know the details).

Anyways...although i felt there were small improvements that could be made in places, nothing felt broken, unintuitive or frustrating to play, and I felt the level stood out enough from the crowd of "Quest For The Mystical MacGuffin" type levels to be a must play. So I rated you 5 stars and hearted the level for repeat playthroughs. Nice job, keep up the good work.

BTW...if you get the chance then please try out my new level Scrumpy Sack featured in the Cool Levels forum.

Woah! I thought this thread was dead! I left for a week on holiday and...this! Such a nice surprise filled with great feedback!

Well, I thought there could be a second level. It wouldn't be any time soon, seeing as I'll have to think up something new to spice it up, although I do have a few ideas! It could finish of where you left off. I could also throw in a bit of a story in there.

Thanks for the feedback and nice comments, NEO and Ungreth (everyone as well!), it's nice to know people are still playing this!

Hi, I played the level today. It's refreshing to see a level with very simple visuals and gameplay. After having played complex levels, with too much decoration, too long and hard, this has been a really nice experience.

Furthermore, a whole level in black/white would be boring, but the idea of the teleporting machine is very good to avoid you getting you bored. In particular, the part when the machine gets broken and you have to come back to real world to fix it is an awesome idea!

The puzzles in the very beginning are good, and in fact rememberme some puzzles I have used in my last level (which is, by the way, pretty similar in the visual aspect to your "real" world).

The only small comments I would do are regarding the beginning of the level. The music doesn't fit too much in the sci-fi atmosphere of the level. Also, the level seems too empty sometimes in the real world. You could try to add more decoration, or at least to change the colour of the MGS metal you use (I used white stickers, for example). The teleporting machine was awesome though

:star::star::star::star::star: from me for this refreshing and really fun level.

If you have time it would be great if you could give me some feedback in my "Tanks factory 2" level. As you will notice the visual aspect (at least in the part where you are in a new factory) is somehow similar to this level.

PD: I also played some of your levels and tutorials. Very good job in general. Keep the good work

Maybe you could add some things out there? 5 stars and a heart! XD

Yeah, I know. It's supposed to be a bit like space, except black and white.

And with air.

Pretty cool level.

Loved the visual design of the alternate dimension and the mechanisms in the regular world. The line-drawn car made me lol. I don't think I have seen anything quite like it before.

I recorded a video of the level:

Great stuff, gave it :star::star::star::star::star: and a <3.
