Tera Cota (Spotlighted!!)

Archive: 25 posts

Tera CotaVelcroJonze
Cardboard Chaos!! Created using only paper materials.... well, mostly.
A couple weeks ago I did a small section in Fastbro's Imagithon level called Tera Cota. I have had a few messages asking me if I planned on doing anything else with what I had. Well.... here is the rest. I originally did my piece using different materials, but I republished using mostly basic materials and I liked the look , so I went with it. This is not a long level, but it has a bit of exploration and many nooks and crannies to find point bubbles. Speaking of bubbles, I placed them in strategic locations for some great bubble chains if the high score is your thing.

As always your feedback is most welcome, and if you come across any problems, please let me know.

Thanks and enjoy!!

Grrrrr.... Every Wednesday and Thursday I am without my PSP, and for some reason everyone has decided to publish their levels now (Xenon, Spok, and now you!)! I am super excited to check this out seeing as I LOVED your Fort Sugar levels and Timber Canyon! Sorry that I will not be able to play it or leave feedback until Friday :-(2010-04-01 02:26:00

Oh, I am sorry to hear that Poo, I would go nuts without my psp for a whole two days.

I normally like to publish on Sunday's, for some reason I get a lot of quick plays on Sunday, but I just couldn't wait to publish this. I am working on an Easter level for a contest Shadow Sake is putting on over in the Gamespot lbp psp forums. I know how I am, and I would not be able to peacefully work on that if I had this one sitting on the back burner.

I hope you like this one as well Poo!!

Am I always usually the first to put feedback?
Anyways, here you go!

This level was DIFFERENT. Honestly man, I thought it would be like Timber Canyon, or Fort Sugar.
Although, it was different than the two (counting fort sugar series as 1) You put a shock on my face.
You did it again. You made everything different.
I wonder if the next level is different than the rest again.

I liked the scenery so much, even though it consisted of basic materials.
I was enjoying the level, but once it ended, I was sad. I didn't want the happy level to end so soon.
That's how much I liked it. I didn't want it to go away.
So I'll be replaying it again, of coarse. It had fun platforming skills.
I enjoyed how the switches open a secret land form on the back layer.

Collecting the score bubbles do make up for the level being short, but I enjoyed it all the way.
I didn't expect a level so soon too! My guess is that we'll be seeing each other at the 36th spotlight
Yes, I said it, I'm sure you'll get spotlight again.

My favorite part was the hill looking things that some rise and some decrease down.
It was something new, well you had it on Timber Canyon, but this was when you barely land on it then it started to move. which made it seem different and unnoticeable. (Even though I noticed it)
I'm wondering if the levels all seem the same, but just different textures...
Anyways, the level was beyond different and I gave you 5 stars :star::star::star::star::star: and I think a heart....
Not sure, well I'll remember to add one.

Thanks for the feedback and the heart Spark. I do wish I could make a good long level that was consistently fun throughout the entirety like some creators I know, you included.

For some reason I get to a point, and the level just tells me that's enough, leave them wanting more. This was honestly never intended to be a level. I started working on the piece for Fastbro on a Saturday night, and didn't put my psp down until it was finished, maybe four hours later. Then my OCD kicked in, and I had to put more and more in it. I'm glad you thought this was something completely different even with mostly basic materials, that is a great compliment.

It's always great getting feedback from you Bro!!

And here is to another Spotlight together, well ....hopefully for me, you are a shoe in.

Thanks Spark, for all you do in the lbp community, the fantastic levels you create, for the great advise you give to anyone who asks, your honestly, and for being a friend!!

Hey VJ-

Mmmm, this one tastes like cardboard! Now I know what a level would be like if it was built entirely inside a cereal box.

More cool stuff here as always. It just wouldn't be a VJ level without vertically mounted 2-way switches and automated Sackboy catapults, and thankfully both are here in abundance. I like how you used the Metropolis background primarily for the background noises, and it was a particularly good fit with the Metropolis music - no surprise there. One of my favorite different things you did was the inclusion of "hidden" areas of point bubbles that you can't get to after flipping a switch to progress through the level. The "angled piston" section is a good example of this. I also liked how spikes started showing up towards the end of the level - the subtle ramp up in difficulty is a nice touch. As you mentioned in your first post, there are lots of possible score bubble combos as well which add tons of replay value.

There isn't much at all I didn't like, so you've forced me to be picky. The "explosion" sound (or is is "big impact"?) you used throughout somehow feels out of place - perhaps it's too sudden and/or not subtle enough. I was thinking maybe one of the quieter environmental or mechanical noises would be better, but that's purely a personal taste kind of thing. I also wasn't totally sure why you could see though the back of the level during the section right at the end, but I figured perhaps it was to represent a "level under construction" type of thing. It's not a bad thing at all, it just had me wondering.

A predictable 5 stars and a heart!

EDIT:I forgot to ask, is the spelling of your level name intentional, or did you mean "Terracotta?"
Tera could mean Toxicology Excellence for Risk Assessment or perhaps the Topfree Equal Rights Association (no, I didn't make that up).
Cota is likely in reference to the Columbus Ohio Transportation Authority, or it could be the Children's Organ Transplant Association. Weird.

i loved the smoothness and over all flow of the level. it had me impressed how stunningly clever you were in making such a small space be so entertaining. it was an interesting idea to use cardboard as the main material and did not make it dull at all. obviously the shortness was dissapointing, but it left an excellent impression. i loved the part with the blocks that sink and the blocks that rose. it kept me on my toes and presented very nice platforming elements.

i gave u five stars and a heart

Well, I'm finally here to post feedback. I was so excited to check this level out since I really like your style. I am just going to talk about what I thought of the level as I played :-)

Well, the level starts off with a nice nod to Fort Sugar with the player spawning into a line of point bubbles

I LOVED how everything shifted when you grab the first switch. It was a very nice transition and looked awesome!

The platforms that slowly move when you land on them felt very unique and I liked the idea a lot. And this was followed up by the staple of all VelcroJonze levels: The platforms that shoot you all over the place

Great camera angles as always :-) It's always a pleasure to play your levels simply because the camera is so good :-)

I can haz secrtz??? I just found the secret block that you pull out to get the motherload of point bubbles! Secret side path FTW! I see that there are all kinds of secret areas in this level! I love it!

I got to the section with the hanging bocks that raise you into the spikes when you land on them. I love that mechanic :-)

There is a section where you go to the left and there are clumps of point bubbles. There is one clump that is too high to reach, but when you jump for it there is a small cave in and they fall down to you. Excellent little detail!

Wow, I jumped for a platform and it was pulled away, which basically turned me into a pinball which was shot here, there, and everywhere :-P Awesome stuff, and an excellent ending to the level.

This is another incredible level, and I love how you managed to implement new mechanics into it that were not in any of your previous levels, while still including some of the mechanics that I know and love which have become staples of VelcroJonze levels Awesome work!!!

Just played this and all I can say is WOW! so many interesting tricks layered over each other perfectly. I love how you can use one area multiple times, revealing new pieces with every action. Not to mention the way you used the materials to give it a very earthen tone. If there was any critique it would be that I want more of it.

Thanks to everyone who left feedback, and I promise to make another post very soon and acknowledge everyone who did.

I am moving into a new house this week and between the packing, unpacking, fixing things, breaking things, cleaning things, I haven't had a lot of free time the last couple days.

I am glad this level has been so well received.

Another great level Velcro! The desgin was effective and Ioved to see the return of your trademark sackboy-gets-flung-around sections. I would have liked it to be longer, but the well placed bubbles and extras made me go back and play again, so that made up for it. Once again another brilliant level, 5 stars and a heart. Maybe next time you could make a level entirely out of cheese?!

Cheese would be an interesting material to build with, I assume it would be grabbable.

Thanks for playing my level and the heart buddy!!

Thanks for the feedback and the heart Taffey.

The piece of background that shows up toward the end was a result of me stretching the the thin layer in the back to it's literal breaking point. I had pulled on that thing the entire level making proccess and by the time I got it there, every time I tried to move it, my game would freeze on me. All I could do was cut it off as even as I could. I decided to add glass and make it a window toward the outside world. The name tera cota is a color of paint that I used one time when I was sand blasting metal pipes. It was a real mellow brownish color and I remember it was spelled with only one R and one T. When I was making the piece for Fastbro the name just popped in my head.

Glad you liked my level Bro, If someone had told me a couple months ago that you would be playing one of my levels and liking it, I would not have believed it. This is so cool!!!

Thanks for playing my level Xacktar, I am so glad that you like the fact that I kept the same set piece, can I even call it that? But continued the level building off of it and it reveals a little more as you get higher.

I was hoping this would be something people would like.

Thanks again!!

More like struggling on an Easter level.

I might pull out of the contest and see if I can just judge.

There is an Easter pack on the psn now, it has just stickers and costumes though.

Loved this level! You just keep getting better and better. Sonic team needs to hire you pronto, so you can show them how to have speed in a level without sacrificing gameplay. Your bubble layouts are masterful. Its fun just figuring out all the combos. (thanks Memorex for nudging me to seek everyone of them out.) Keep up the great work . I can't wait for the next level.

5 stars and a heart and congrats on the spot light!

Thanks buddy, I really appreciate the kind words.

I'm glad you like the way I placed the bubbles, there are some good combos you can get going, my favorite one to try and get is at the end, and your on the last rising platform below the spikes and you can get on the on the top of that one section with all the piles of bubbles. I actually put a camera there so you could get a look at all the bubbles and make a plan of attack.

I've noticed you and Memorex have been going back and forth on the highs score on this level. That is so cool!!

Thanks again my friend!!

Hey velcrojonze. Im in absolute awe of your lbp skills. Every single level of yours taht i have played i have ended up giving you 5 stars and a heart. This level was no different. The materials you used in the level perfectly complemented each other and made the level an absolute delight to just look at. Also, the platforming was excellent and not too hard and not too easy. I thought the lenght of the level was fine and made the level short and sweet. Congrats on the spotlight by the way and cannot wait for the next level from you.2010-04-07 06:36:00
