Round 2 - The Make-Believe Mobile

The What

The Batmobile, the De Lorean, the A-Team van, the Knight Rider, the Ectomobile, the Mystery Machine, the Magic School Bus, the Starship Enterprise. What do all these things have in common? Why, they're all fictional vehicles of course!

For this challenge, we ask you to recreate a vehicle--loosely defined as anything that can move sackboy/girl from one point to another in space or time--from a movie, television show, video game, comic book, a real book (Jules Verne, anyone?), or any other popular media.

The Manual

You may use any material or sticker, including those from DLC.
The vehicle must move from a point A to a point B anywhere in the space/time continuum of create mode.
The inspiration for the entry must be made obvious. The judges will look for such things as faithful visual representation and faithful handling, so it is in your best interest to make your vehicle recognizable. Please state the reference vehicle in your post, along with the name of the level. Posting the reference image is recommended, but not required.
You can submit as many vehicles as you can produce within the given time frame.
Participants cannot win twice in a row, but winners of the previous round may submit entries for fun.
Judges may participate in the contest but are ineligible to claim the prize.
Participating levels must be posted on this thread by the deadline (see below).
If you're not sure what to name your level, call it 'LBPC Vehicle Contest'. Otherwise the title is up to you!
By posting your vehicle on this thread, you agree to the fine print stated below.

The Dead End
The deadline for this contest is 16 April 2010 at 11:59 PM GMT. Late vehicles will be sent to the pound.

The Shiny Rims

The contest winner will receive his or her choice of the following:

One FREE premium LBP DLC pack of the winner's choosing.* (This prize option is for NA (US and Canda) region games only. At this time we do not have the ability to send out EU or Asia region codes.)

-- OR --

One FREE month of LBPCentral donor status. No ads! Custom title! Bonus forum features! Juicy green dot next to your name! Did I mention, NO ADS?

Had enough? Well too bad, because there's more. The winner of this contest will be crowned the new Grease Monkey and will be given the option to be a judge for Round 3 of the next "You Want Me to Make WHAT??" contest.

* Premium LBP PSP DLC is defined as any of the available "level" or "theme" packs currently available for download, including (but not limited to) The Gardens Level Pack, The Savannah Level Pack, The Wedding Level Pack, The Canyons Level Pack, The Sack That Time Forgot Level Pack, or the Lurve Level Pack. Any additional DLC of equivalent or lesser value that is made available before the end of the contest may also be chosen as a prize option.

Bumper Sticker

A special thanks to salieri for coming up with this great idea, but more importantly, for the valuable lesson associated with it:

"I've found it's really developed my skills, trying to recreate something from existing images and plans, and there's the added challenge of making it look and feel familiar to people who already know it." --S
If you haven't already caught on, these contests not only set up friendly competition, but also help you become a better creator. Inventing new concepts from scratch can be downright overwhelming, and sometimes, recreating existing objects make creating much more doable. Afterall, some brilliant artists produce their masterpieces with a picture or object in front of them. So too do some brilliant creators of LBP.

Here are some great tutorials you might find useful to help you in the process:

How to Make Walking Objects and Vehicles (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=22802-How-To-Make-Walking-Objects-And-Vehicles)
How To: Vehicle Controls (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=24717-How-To-Vehicle-Controls&p=428076#post428076)

The Fine Print

By participating in this contest, you agree that you understand that the judges will make their decisions objectively, fairly, and in an unbiased manner. You also agree that there is no place for whining in an excellent contest such as this one, and any belly-aching or other distasteful behavior will result in public mockery and being pelted with soggy apricots. Finally, by participating you agree that the point of this whole thing, win or lose, is simply to have fun and enjoy yourself. This is, afterall, a video game.

Thank you. It just so happens that that was the case. What befuddled me was the wheel turned the right way... Physically, it should've made the vehicle go forward. However, I soon found myself going straight into a wall.

Awesome contest idea for this round! And here I thought you wouldn't be able to top cakes.

Well, you can top cakes of course, I mean do better than.... Oh nevermind.

salieri's advice under the Bumper Sticker really hits home. Way back in November 2008, I finally managed to break the seal on create mode by trying to recreate a Recognizer (http://www.fx.clemson.edu/~cdoehli/recognizer.jpg) from the movie Tron. It's great having a picture or template in front of you that you can work towards, and trying to make something look or work a certain way will expand your understanding of the create tools at your disposal.

I think I may actually have to submit a just-for-fun entry for this.

Hearing the Tron idea by Taffey got me super excited (my wife and I LOVE Tron )Tron FTW!

Most Tron objects lend themselves well to the LBP universe, although it's too bad we don't have VR material on the PSP. Still, it would be great to see a lightcycle (http://www.inertramblings.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/02/Tron_Lightcycles.jpg), tank (http://www.dansowter.com/images/tron/tank.png), solar sailer (http://www.jasonbennion.com/photos/albums/Misc/tron_solar_sailer.jpg), or even a grid bug (http://www.tron-sector.com/gallery/show.aspx?id=2055).

I've come to an important realization about centering wheels:

Centering wheels is a lot harder when the material it's bolted to is an asymmetrical material on the layer in front of the wheel. Especially because the bolt snaps to the center of the object in question... which is nowhere near the center of my wheel. I had to fool around with it for 5 minutes before it finally centered (more or less).

An easy way to center a bolt is by doing this:

If the wheel is in front or behind of the object you are connecting it to, then use the cursor, select the wheel and go back to the pop-it menu (Your screen stays in the middle of the object), select the bolt, don't move the cursor and place the bolt. TADA

I thought people would have figured this out by now

Hey SockFace,

Well, it depends. For instance, the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile isn't entirely fictional as it exists in real life, but it would still qualify as a reference vehicle. The point of the contest is to replicate an already existing vehicle with a touch of fantasy. Thus, you cannot just make a shopping trolley out of the blue, but if you have a picture of a crazy shopping trolley with a wacky design or amazing paint job or something we judges can compare your work to, then it would be okay.

Can I put more that one vehicle In a level.

Hey cory_7101995,

Yes, you can put more than one vehicle in one level as long as you specify what your reference was for both vehicles. And remember, quality, not quantity, will win you the prize!

Seeing as Doctor Who is returning to our UK screens this week, I decided I should make the Doctor's TARDIS, and with this there comes an issue, especially rule 2. This states that: The vehicle must move from a point A to a point B anywhere in the space/time continuum of create mode. My TARDIS does not move in space, it moves in time. You'll see what I mean when you play the level, but I am sure it is probably bending this rule to the point of a temporal hole in the fabric of time and space roughly the size of Auustralia. Anyway, maybe you'll award extra marks for being LittleBigger on the inside.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing this.

I had a few ideas for what to do as a 'just for fun' entry, but I decided to opt for something really simple, inspired by my envy of PS3 players who got the Sonic the Hedgehog DLC:

Level name: LBPC Vehicle Contest: Sonic Flying Machines
Creator: SalieriAAX

EDIT: OOPS! Forgot to cite my sources - got to set a good example.

Tornado:

Egg-o-matic
If you're not familiar with the old 2D Sonic Games, the Egg-o-matic reappears constantly throughout the games in different forms and with various modifications. The Eggcopter that I have made is not copied from a particular form but is supposed to be yet another variation in the spirit of the originals - the shape is basically as it is to improve the balance as it flies. Here are some examples of somestandard, unmodified egg-o-matics:

Heh, don't get too excited. They're very simple. I wanted to demonstrate what could be acheived without too much effort, rather than showing off. I also opted for NO MOVING PARTS, which was a tought call, but they were messing up the balance.

EDIT:

If anyone is making a land-based vehicle and wants to employ some slightly more advanced control methods to create the handling you want, I've published How To: Vehicle Controls (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=24717-How-To-Vehicle-Controls&p=428076#post428076) with a few ideas that you may find useful.

Anyways, I suck at making vehicles, but with salieri's guides, I made quite a good vehicle.

Wait, can the vehicle be made up? I made a spider-vehicle.
Or does this got to be based on something. I'm willing to make another vehicle if I didn't do this contest right...

Hey Spark,

Thanks for going outside your box to try and make a vehicle, which we all know you don't usually do. But that is part of the contest ! However, it does have to be "based on something." We're judging based on how well you accurately replicate the reference vehicle in both visuals and handling. So technically a made-up vehicle doesn't qualify, but I'm still curious to see your creation.

I was going to do that for a 'just for fun' entry. I don't really like Harry Potter at all, but a while ago I made a pretty accurate A3 Pacific Class 'Flying Scotsman' locomotive in green that looked really cool when I changed it to red (I'd recommend using some artistic licence, the 'Hall' Class locomotive that they used for the train in the movies is pretty ugly in stark profile). However, it had loads of moving parts and was pretty detailed, and by the time I'd made a station and some tracks for it to run on, it had started going haywire, so I ditched it, as it was cheating a bit to use a vehicle I'd already made anyway.

Good luck with yours though! I bloody love steam locomotives!

I love the Flinstones car! Not only does it have zero emissions, it also gives you a great workout!

EDIT: Hey R1LEY/Meatwad,

Yay, you can post now! Welcome to the boards, and thanks for the great entry last round.

So this contest you can make a vehicle AND an animal? You most absolutely can make an animal because it counts as a "vehicle" if it has transportation function (i.e., Mario's 4-cylinder muscle ride, YOSHI! )

People these days... never post pictures with good angles. *Sigh* I guess I should start searching more. But, I will find
bits of episodes on Youtube as a guide to making it.

BTW, I loved the Flintstones car. You made it work so well.

Wow, some epic entries already for this contest. All of them are excellent. Because I'm not judging, I have to say that my favorite so far has to be the Flintstone Car, especially with regards to the real-world accurate controls. My favorite method of travel, however, goes to the Tardis. Genius!

And now, in order of entries posted..... pictures!

It's Invader Zim's Voot Cruiser

Level Name: Zim's Voot Cruiser
By: Play_the_Nerd

My reference image:

Oh, I did not want to leave out Zim's Robot, GIR, so I made the cruiser look like his flying plush pig.

Here's a reference image of the pig:
http://www.rhumbaghost.com/journal_pics/gir_on_pig.jpg

I might make an actual flying pig, if it counts as a vehicle lol.

Hey everyone,

It's official, Cool Speed Sack Phalaina, the winner of Round 1 of the YWMTMW??, will be the third judge of this contest! Welcome Phalaina, and thanks for the fantastic entry last round.

The entries for Round 2 look great so far, but please keep them coming!

hey the judges will be judging solely on the vehicle and not the level itself right?

Technically only the vehicle will be judged and we won't hold it against anyone who doesn't include accessory objects. However, you must also recreate the function of the reference vehicle; this is a judging criteria. Thus, if you're making a time machine, it is necessary to add in a transformation of scenery to give the illusion of time-travelling. As another example, if your vehicle has anti-gravity capabilities--say a spider vehicle that can climb on walls and stick to ceilings--then you must make the walls and ceilings. Does that make sense?

And although beautifying your level isn't required, it may add a wow factor to your vehicle presentation, which is always a plus! Can't wait to try your vehicle!

Here's a reference image of the pig:
http://www.rhumbaghost.com/journal_pics/gir_on_pig.jpg

I might make an actual flying pig, if it counts as a vehicle lol.

Judging from that picture, the pig is a vehicle! You most certainly can make that into an entry.

Impressed with all the entries so far,

This happened to me also with my first try at creating my Voot Cruiser. I tried to edit it but it froze. So I restarted but I created a better looking version as my entry. So yeah Meatwad is right it's corrupted. Do you plan on remaking it though?

Sheesh, this is awesome! I can't keep up with all the entries. That's a very good thing. I'll grab screenshots of the latest and greatest ASAP.

In the meantime, I've made a just-for-fun entry. Why just-for-fun? Well, because it breaks the rules of course!

My entry is the T16 Skyhopper model that Luke plays with in A New Hope. I had originally created this, uh, vehicle as part of a puzzle that I ended up deleting from my first Star Bores level. So, I've put together this "deleted scene" as a mini level, complete with working puzzle mechanic. The level is currently live and will remain on the Community Moon only for another week or so. The level is called *contest entry* LBPC YWMTMW? Make-Believe Mobile. Download and play it while you can folks!

Here's a screenshot of the vehicle itself in my level:

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/YWMTMW-R2-Taffey-jff-T16.jpg

The "vehicle" operates exactly as it does in the movie, meaning that it's a model so you have to pick it up and fly it around yourself, preferably while making space ship noises with your mouth. Like any good model, you also have to put it together first!

My reference photos are below. The first shows the schematics of the model ship itself, while the second shows Luke playing with it by flying it around with his hand:

Perhaps an explanation of the controls is in order? I found the ship randomly stopping at certain points and I had no idea how to make it start again. Also, it told me to use the brake, but fails to explain how.

Also, I ran into a target when I failed to shoot it, and it collided with the stop stopping me dead in my tracks.

Hey Meatwad,

how do you insert a picture to reply?

If you already have a picture uploaded to an online server like Photobucket, all you have to do is insert the url of the image between the image wrap tag like so:

INSERT URL HERE

If you don't have a picture with you, then just make sure to list your PSN ID and level title, and we'll post a picture for you! Let me know if you need anything else.

Good luck,

xero11213 Perhaps an explanation of the controls is in order?
Yes is in that order but maybe I should try to give a more detailed explanation

Also, it told me to use the brake, but fails to explain how.
Yes perhaps was a mistake put the brake outside the cockpit

I found the ship randomly stopping at certain points and I had no idea how to make it start again
Yes it is assumed that automatically the ship start again, but sometimes don't do that and you have to press the brake.
Also, I ran into a target when I failed to shoot it, and it collided with the stop stopping me dead in my tracks
Yes I tried to make this not happen I put a magnetic key on the spaceship to destroy the targets but sometimes this not happen,I must say in my defense that I didn't tried to fix this issues because the principal objective was the spaceship and I thought that this not would happen to everybody.. and hmm.. and... nobody said that a spaceship from starfox would be easy to handle

Thanks for the advice

Wow, those are all such lovely entries ^^! It'll be so much fun to help judge them! And, Salieri and Taffey, those just-for-fun-vehicles were really awesome as well! Good luck to everyone, and great work!2010-04-13 15:08:00

I would've have entered, but I decided that two contest wins were good enough for right now. And besides, I'm too busy and there's no way I'll have enough time to top all of your entries (if it's even possible).

And... wow, this is the biggest contest yet! :hero:

Yes... a bit too big to compete with. Hmmm... I need to go now.

*Rushes away with new contest idea.*

Well, the deadline is tomorrow before midnight GMT, which is approximately 24 hours from now. However, if you can squeeze your entry in a little after the deadline, we will still consider it for judging. Does that sound good?

To everyone else, yes there's still about 24 Hours left in the contest! We have some amazing prizes to give away (look on the first page for details), and in addition, you will forever be glorified by having taken part in this epic contest. So put those greasy work clothes on and get working on those hot rides!

You can do it Epic MeatWad! XD I'm just about slightly more than halfway done as well. Technically, mine's just a just-for-fun entry but I'd like to beat that deadline ^^. We're making vehicles, after all, it's more fun to look at it like it was a race! 2010-04-16 02:10:00

There! Finally done! Yay! XD My just-for-fun entry's called: LBPC YWMTMW? Moflee Flight. I really like LocoRoco so I made a moflee bird ^^. I was going to make a buibui crane or plane, and I did start some... but this seemed more fun in the end. I think it sort of counts as a vehicle... Anyway, it was so much fun to make ! Now I REALLY want to finish an actual full level ^^!

Good luck everyone!

All right everyone, this contest is now officially closed! Thank you for all these great entries--judging will sure be tough this round!

Keep your eyes peeled for Round 3 because we have another treat for all you PSP sackboys and sackgirls. Stay tuned for the announcement of winners in the near future.

Looking for the meanest ride in town,
jeffcu28

P.S. Epic Meatwad you have until midnight US Pacific Time to turn in your entry, so put those fingers to good use. After that, I'm afraid we can't consider your entry for judging, but you're more than welcome to post it just for fun.

Hey everyone,

Before I announce the winner, I would like to thank each and everyone of you for making this a successful contest. Phalaina, salieri, and I were blown away by ALL the entries this round, and we hope you take this experience with you when creating new levels. With the talent showed here, I can only see a bright future for LBP PSP.

So without further ado...

Wait, did you know that we had a staggering 13 entries this round?

Now where was I? Oh, and the winner is (drumroll please):

***1st Place Winner***

rOckalOveEr x73's Up! house

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/cc3b02b0.jpg

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/f4ca0356.jpg

Congratulations rOckalOveEr x73! Your entry not only resembled the original Up! House with all its vibrant colors and endearingly traditional architecture, it also moved fluidly as it rose up freely into the sky, unbounded by the rigid and impersonal modern architecture around it. I will be in contact with you shortly to discuss your prize.

However, we received many great entries this round, so we would also like to reward 100 experience points to our two Honorable Mentions:

ali985's Flinstone car

famouscustard's TARDIS

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/YWMTMW-R2-famouscustard-Tardis1.jpg

Thanks again everyone, and please be on a lookout for Round 3 of the You Want Me To Make WHAT?? Contest.

Applauding,
