Well guys, after being inspired I spent the weekend creating as close as possible, world 1-4 from Super Mario Bros. This is the first time you do a castle level in the game. Don't expect anything very difficult, but enjoy a trip down memory lane as you experience the closest representation I could make of this level.

One way that I hope I can help you feel like you are playing a retro game is by using a sack boy tracker and a camera to keep you in the middle of the screen at all times. I also have it so that if you do die for the first three quarters of the level you have to start from the beginning like the original game. I did add a check point before bowser so you wouldn't have to help cut down on frustration. Luckily, this is a shorter level so it shouldn't be too much trouble.

I spent a lot of time on creating the 8-bit characters and feel. To make bowser or toad I used a small grid, made cardboard boxes at the smallest size and used them as pixels. The end result is that what you see in the level is an exact replica of their 8 bit counter parts. As you can see in the picture above and this picture of toad.

I also wanted to let you know that this was my first level that actually filled up the whole thermometer. I think it is because of all the shapes that are created from trying to make a true pixel style. I wish I could do more (the "bridge" under bowser is not what it looked like in the original game and I wanted to create the lava too) but I ran out of thermo.

EDIT: The sound system is in place! I found a sound effect I like and have placed it in! Hope you enjoy it.

Overall, I hope you enjoy my attempt to do a mario level. I think that I may make an original level that is all on the first layer and keep it pixelated too. (just got to be more careful of the thermo). Please leave any feed back and if you guys like it or not.

Here is also a video play through thanks to memodrix!

For comparison sake, here is a video of someone playing the original.

So one fire stick thing is off so I think I will switch that, also the coin blocks are invisible in the original. As you can see, the original can be beat in 30 seconds, mine might take slightly longer because sackboy can't move as fast as mario.

This looks very detailed and i like it, although i am wondering how you got the question marks on the points boxes is that a custom shape you made?2010-03-29 12:03:00

If I had to guess I would say he did it with careful use of the small grid?

Looks fun! I'll try playing it later, if I can get to my PS3

Did I played this level before? The pictures you posted look familiar. Either way, they look like good levels. I'll play this level the next time I play LBP. I hope it goes well and hope it feels like a Mario level.2010-03-29 17:31:00

To do the coin box's I used the small grid, and going pixel by pixel by looking at a very zoomed in image of a coin box from the original, created it. Then I took a picture of it. Then in the level I took a "block" and put a piece of dissolve stuck onto the front. I put my sticker of the image of the question mark, attached a proximity switch and an emitter to emit a score bubble, hooked the proximity switch to the dissolve and voila, a coin box!2010-03-29 19:03:00

That was a fun level and the pixelated fire and characters are good too. The level feels really short though but at least you told us that the thermo went full. Here's my suggestion, make Bowser jump a bit higher, and make the bridge dissolve faster after you're behind Bowser.2010-03-30 18:39:00

Well, that is the actual length of the original level. No joke, I found a "map" that someone had made and I copied it so what you played would be exactly how long it would have been in the original. The only slight difference is that the coin boxes at the end are closer together and the little "pits" at the end that you can use to avoid the plasma balls would have been three more "blocks" deep. I may tweak bowser's jump, but I do think you are right about the bridge going a bit slow. I can speed that up.2010-03-30 20:45:00

Just updated it so now when you jump their is a jump sound effect! I also sped up the time it takes for the bridge to disappear after you beat bowser. Enjoy!2010-04-04 04:01:00

HAHA! The jump sound effect is just phenomenal! This level is cute the looker if you ask me, an almost exact copy of the original (cept for the blocks you can't make invisible). The #1 best part is when you hit the switch-bowser doesn't just fall in, he waits for the blocks to fall first (just like mario). Just that sets it apart from all the other bowser boss fights I've seen. Mario is definatley a used topic in LBP but you spruced it up enough to justify him 2010-04-04 15:55:00

This level looks great! I don't remember World 1-4, that much, because I allways spring to world five. You know there's the hidden Arena in 1-2. I look forward to try it!2010-04-06 22:08:00

My returned F4F.

I can't comment on the authenticity of it as I've never played the original but I'm guessing you got it pretty much spot on.

I was going to say it was just too short but having read the previous posts about the thermo and the actual level length that's understandable.

I did have a lot of trouble with Bowser the first time I played it. It took me ages to get close enough and when I did he crushed me when I tried to go under him. 2nd play though I did it first time. I don't know if I was particularly unlucky first time or lucky the 2nd or if you changed anything.

The coin boxes and rotating fire things were all excellent.

Overall very good work and a nice level of difficulty albeit very short. If you plan on doing more like this it would be nice if you could find a workaround to free up more thermo. I know it wouldn't look quite as good but it may be worth making stickers of the most intricate parts and the brickwork and using them instead.

I'll look into the sticker thing. The hard part was getting one that was repeatable. The other hard part was just those fire spinners, they sucked up a ton of thermo for some reason.2010-04-07 01:01:00

Hey. Great level. And it a bit short, but of course it is, because it's the actual level. I really like the way the camera follows. A thing that could have been Unique is if you couldn't get back, as in the real Mario. I also found a problem with Bowser. The fire he emitted couldn't hit you, unless you jump. Sackboy would just bow down, when Bowser spitted fire.2010-04-07 16:43:00

Today is your lucky day Shebhnt, I have devised a device that will allow you to put invisible blocks in your Mario levels. My PSN is LordCanti07 and the Level that contains this devilish contraption is called Invisible Box Item. It should be in south america if you are looking at my levels. It moves nicely along grids and is totally invisble in game but not as invisible while editing. In order to move it around after it is already placed you just have to highlight the area around the 2 emitters that should be tiny but still visible. I really hope you decide to use this in your mario levels. Also I already have it set to emit a box like you have in your levels and a point bubble for points of course. Have fun.

I will check that out tonight if I get a chance! Thanks for the help. My only worry is about the thermo since it is already full, I might not be able to fit these in but I will look into them for maybe future levels.2010-04-07 19:18:00

I don't think they took up really any thermo. They prolly use less Dark Matter than you got going on your current ones.2010-04-07 19:19:00
