Card-Bored FINAL BETA

Archive: 25 posts

Card-BoredPixelParagon, additional help by Inanimacy
This is a collaborative effort between Inanimacy and I, to see if a level constructed entirely, and I mean entirely, out of cardboard and polystyrene could be fun.
We are in the final BETA phase.

To play it you must search for "Card-Bored Key level", the password is 4 - 1 - 2.
If we get any feedback at all, positive or negative, we will expand upon the level. Thanks!
Also, this is the first level I've made even though I've been playing for over a year.

Looks good.

Sackcast did a contest like this many months ago where you had to make a level using only 3 basic materials ( dark matter, cardboard and dissolve ). That also included all logic switches used throughout the level which meant a lot of tweaking for me as I used glass in all my switches. By the way my PLASMAVILLE level actually ended up winning ( sorry shameless plug ).

I'll have to play this asap anyway. BTW what is the rain in the screenshot made of ?

I understand its a beta but it was an incredibly tedious level. You're right the 2p on that first bit is messed up, so i tryed it by myself (instead of with my bro). The camera angle also is annoying on that (regardless of how many players). It got repetitive after dying ~10 times on that first bit. I went on and continued to play but it was incredibly annoying that once I died I had to start over. There was no direction after it started raining so I went left and died the first time. It looks great as far as the cardboard theme goes but there's a lot of annoyances you should work out before this gets published.2010-03-26 23:37:00

@mrvista: Glass. It would be just weird raining cardboard.

Thanks for the feedback, I guess I'll replace that right now.

I haven't played it myself yet because mrsv is logged on but I got her to play it with Icey.

I must say from a bystanders point of view it looked very good. You had some nice looking ideas in there and considering the limited materials it had quite a good look to it aswell.

They managed to get through that first pipe at the 2nd attempt which was ok. Well one did anyway. I'd like to see more of this.

I'm not so sure about having to start from the beginning again though each time you die. I think that would get very annoying after a while. I'm a massive fan of lots of checkpoints as I hate having to redo parts I've already done in any level or any game for that matter. Having to finish the level on one life is harking back to olden times and I hated that about the old games. I like to think we've progressed from that for the better with the advent of checkpoints. If you have 'em use 'em I say.

Thanks for the feedbaack guys.

UPDATE 1.01
-Camera angle changed on flume.
-Rain changed to styrofoam.
-Camera angle changed at end.
-Changed "placeholder platform"

Be on the lookout for more updates!
Also, mr.v, I'm thinking of embedding logic that gives you 3 lives before sending you to the continue screen, but so far it's been a little complex to make.

That sounds like the key glitch . Welcome to the club, we can't unlock levels....

alright, thanks for inviting me into the game! from what i played it was well done, but i found that there weren't many warnings about what was going to happen. like i had no idea i was supposed to jump at the big slide part, until i was in mid-air and it told me to jump lol. maybe put a sign on the way down.

that's really the only thing i could think of, maybe make it longer, it would do everyone good since you end up caught in the level, expecting more, and then it's over.

<------please check out any of my creations

Well I think we've got most of the issues sorted out, now it's time to expand. But first, I'll have to check out your guy's stuff.

Also, if the initial release gets enough attention, we'll try to make a sequel.

UPDATE 1.03
-Minor detail changes
-Addition tweaks to flume
-Wall added to right of "rocket ride" to prevent overjumps
-Added (incomplete) boat race

Hey Arkei, finally got to play this

I actually didnt mind the visuals when you used all the different cardboards together, it didnt look bad. But when i got to the section where your jumping onto floating platforms in the rain, there was only the regular kind of cardboard, which doesnt look good at all.I also saw the speech bubble that said you were planning on expanding that section, i think theres enough. I would suggest mixing them all the way through. I liked the pipe chute at the start in comination with the downhill jump portion. The race at the end where you use the sticker to boost is pretty neat, i liked that.

Not bad so far, keep it up! Can you checkout my Gangsta life of Detroit level? Thanks

There were no other cardboards. Everything is plain cardboard and polystyrene stickered white. Thanks for the feedback, though.2010-03-29 00:19:00

Just played your level twice and liked it.

PRO:
-It's simple design looks suprisingly good.
-Really liked the platform elements. Jumping undearneath the spiked ceilings etc. Good stuff.
-The sticker-driven boats were very innovative.

CON:
-Couldn't find a scoreboard. After the boatrace the water just drained and the rest of the floor was empty.
-It's hard to jump into the boats, because of the flags.
-I played your level twice, once by myself, and then with 4 players at one. With four players some of the platforming action becomes rather difficult and frustrating. (Camera follows the first one that falls all the way down.) Could perhaps be fixed by raising the deadly gas.

If you have the time for 4F4, my new level is called "Lost Shrine of the Bunraku Monks" (link in signature)

Actually, I had all of those things fixed, but I forgot to publish. I'll republish tomorrow as soon as I can.

UPDATE 1.04
-Removed flags from boats
-Zoomed out most of the camera angles
-Gas raised on floating platforms
-Added cardboard variety
-Scoreboard added

Sorry it took so long to publish the update, I had to leave again. Also, even though I mentioned so there is still no scoreboard. I'll get that as soon as I can. (notice how often I say that and not do it?)

UPDATE 1.05 (coming soon)
-Various aesthetic changes
-(hopefully) additional obstacles

And for all of you people still waiting for feedback on your levels, I'm getting on it.

I'm actually adding a theme to the level, so the visual changes will be made on making it look like an abandoned city.

Javi_Haguse and I have talked about doing a cardboard only level for some time now so I'm really interested to see what you've done. I'll be sure to check this out.2010-04-04 00:33:00

So far things look really good! The platforming has a nice flow to it, though I thought that the section in between the two windmills with the platforms that bounce and the spikes could be a bit easier if you fiddled with the springs a little bit. The whole thing looked very nice for being made from one material, though you did choose cardboard, everyone's favorite basic material. So...yeah, the platforming was very satisfying and it was just a fun level. It looked like it would be a lot of fun with 2 or more players. Too bad I have no friends

Anyway, I gave this 4 stars and a heart.

Woah! You're doing F4F. Well, if that's the case.....

Could you check out my level, Waffleworld Prologue in my sig?

Thanks for all the feedback guys! Just posting to let you know that the update has been released, and that this is now the final beta. The key level's combination has been changed to 4 - 1 - 2, because someone uploaded a picture of the combination onto the level. >_>
UPDATE 1.05
-Major aesthetic changes.
-Changed sticker-boats back to grab switch boats
-Updated windmill section.
-Updated lift ride.
-Added rain sounds.

Unfortunately, the thermo won't allow for any new additions. If the initial releases's feedback from the community is positive, we might work on a sequel.
