New Material: Uranium

Archive: 13 posts

I was thinking about a new material for LittleBigPlanet and how its properties would affect the environment around it. Please read carefully.

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES
__________________________________________________

What I came up with was uranium, this material would be described as extremely heavy and reactive to water. When placed on a balanced scale with regular stone on one end and uranium on the other, the uraniums weight would be greater then the regular stone causing the scale to tip to the uranium side. Also when uranium is submerged into water, it will produce thick steam from the waters surface causing a wood platform floating on the water lift up from the steams force, the lighter the material the better it will lift from the steam (WOOD<CARDBOARD<POLYSTYRENE<SACKPERSON<FLOATY).

PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
__________________________________________________

The uranium material would look similar to the regular stone material exept with green illuminating embers all around it, like the fire hazard but green embers instead of red embers, without flames, and will not burn you.

TWEAK
__________________________________________________

Yes; this material can be tweaked! You can tweak the reactivity level which will modify the steam thickness/force when submerged into water and the radiation zone which will modify the distance of steam the water will produce apart from the submerged uranium and above the water. There is also a time option which can modify the duration of steam production when submerged into water.

USES
__________________________________________________

Uranium could be usefull as a timed bridge so Sackpeople could only reach the other end of the water when the uranium is submerged causing steam to lift the platform for the player to cross successfully and it could also be used in logic for a turbine to be propelled by the steam therefore can operate a machine of some sort.

What do you think of the idea? Got any more ideas for uses? Please reply and tell me what you think! Thanks.

You can create this material. It would be a fake material, but it's still possible to create.2010-03-25 17:29:00

Well i wonder why sackboy wouldn't get radiation poisoning if it's uranium. He would sprout 4 extra arms and start to become zombiefied immediately if he touched it It sounds like a good material and it would be cool to see it implemented in nuclear reactor themed level.2010-03-25 19:39:00

I get what your saying and I think its a cool idea...but...I think it should affect sackboy/sackgirl if they either get too close to it or stand within a certain radius for too long. (This could in effect be a 'timed' material without needing a timer) I guess similar to Ice but tweaked to prevent any of the 'hang ups' Ice had. Hummm

I really like the idea of it's steam property as this could indeed power different types of 'machines' or mechanisms, would create new a different obstacles and possibilities.

Sounds exciting I'd say

cant wait to make a time machine with 2.08 gigawats. (any bttf fans out there to correct my wattage? XD)2010-03-25 19:48:00

Sounds like a great innovation-- but I'm not sure I'd wait for the official release... This sounds pretty easy to fake right now... even down to the ember effect!

Build a good level around the play mechanic... give "Uranium" away as the prize. Sounds like maxi-plays to me, if its done right.

maybe it would also have a timed damage like in Half Life. It could cause a little damage over time, like swimming with no scuba. so if sackboy came in contact, or within an illuminated (color tweakable/size tweakable) radius it would hurt him a little, and over time, kill him???2010-03-25 23:11:00

Well i wonder why sackboy wouldn't get radiation poisoning if it's uranium.

In realty, uranium is no more then an extrememly heavy and water-reactive ore. When processed into a waste product and its atomic structure infects the Human body, that is when it becomes fatal.

You can research "depleted uranium" and you'll know why!

Well if your going to get all technical then I don't want to play!

LOL (jk)

I see what your saying, but does it really not give off radiation once it has been processed for use in a reactor?

Seems to me that it would...in its raw state maybe not so much, but once it has been enriched I would think so...and no I didn't do a search about it, that would be too easy!

I still like the idea as a whole though!

Exactly! Here's a pic of a uranium ore. :kz:

I think it sounds like a great idea. Just don't attempt to mine it from Australia I've never seen a pic of actual uranium.. looks like Kryptonite.
If you could create a way to deplete it (maybe a contact or combination with another material?) it could add a whole new world of timed avoiding-death scenarios without the need for excessive logic.

It'd be hard to apply it to good use because water affects the entire level, making it difficult for precision usage of the steaming effect. Right? But I love the idea of a new hazard. I'd rather have radiation as an applicable hazard though, like you can irridiate an object just like you can electrocute something.2010-06-28 00:42:00
