Atomic Assistance (Pictures Included)

Atomic Assistance- Publishing at 7pm GMTLadyLyn1
'Atomic Assistance' is a two player level set in a post-apocalyptic setting. You must use your wits, and your partner, to make it to the center of the desolate city. Work together as a team and you might just make it there... I doubt many actually will.
A key level will need to be played first in order to play the actual level; this is to ensure no lonely gadders become disheartened on entering the level alone.

'Atomic Assistance' comes with a warning:

It is not suitable for; women, children, those of a 'nervous disposition' or heart conditions. Only the bravest of men should attempt this mission.

I would like to thank everyone who helped me test the level... and there was a lot of testing! Also a special thanks to FlyingHaggis for the creation and help of the airship.

Here are some screen shots to whet your appetite:

Now go grab a partner and get into that city!

Great Level.
The visuals are very good and the atmoshere is brilliant.
The puzzles were done very well and were different from alot of 2 player puzzles that I have seen.

I think I may have got a bit confused on a couple of the puzzles if I wasn't playing with someone who knew what they were doing but thats mainly because I haven't played many other 2 player levels.

I definately recommend playing it.

5 stars and a heart.

This was a great level and to tell the truth is one of the best 2p levels ever. The game-play was really tricky this made the level even better. Also the visuals were amazing i loved the style, good job! keep up!2010-03-24 21:58:00

This level is wonderful. Probably the second best 2player level ever. ( You beat Jack, but he beat you too ) Seriously, This is really really good stuff. Brilliant layout, great visuals. Awesome use of the 3D glitch and most of all, FUN!!2010-03-24 23:18:00

Haha cheers, although I don't think mine and Jack's can really be compared... apart from both having 'Assistance' in the name. Mine's a lot more puzzle based, whereas Jack's are platformers.

Also, I wouldn't count your own level out as one of the best?

Played this with Compher earlier and had a great time. We both loved the intro level with the bomb being raised and then dropping. Very cool! And then the actually level was a lot of fun as well. I think you picked a fantastic theme and pulled it off very nicely. The level looked really, really good.

Gameplay was a lot of fun as well. I really liked the part with the cannons, where one player shoots across and then shoots the button to fire their buddy across too. I did find the part with the jet pack and bomb conveyor a bit confusing. It wasn't really hard though and we solved it very quickly, but it just felt strange. Maybe it was the camera angles or something.

Anyway, overall I liked it a lot, but I wished there was more!

Great job!

Yeah the jet pack has a more direct camera angle... and although the puzzle isn't particularly challenging, it has been known to confuse people- most had trouble 'placing' the bomb, they much preferred to explode it in the collection chamber.

Anyway thanks for the play through... it's good to know you enjoyed it. Plus I'd much prefer that it was too short than too long anyway.

@Steve: I've republished the intro now with a different key. Maybe that one will work!

Played this last night and whilst there was nothing specifically wrong with it, it did very much feel like the gameplay

didn't really mesh that well with the visuals (more below)
Wasn't anywhere near as impressive as the visuals

Visually it was great, you got a fantastic sense of the dark murkiness and the destruction etc. However, everything was dingy and murky and the key gamplay elements were, in many places, visually indistinct from the surroundings. This resulted in having to take a moment or two to scan around the scenery to find the switch you need to pull. I'd recommend shebhnt's blog for some guidance on how to use visual aspects of the levels as more than simply aesthetics.

There are times when looking around the screen / environment to solve a puzzle, generally when you have slightly subtle environmental puzzles and you are lookg more for ways to use the objects around you to solve the puzzle, NOT when you are simply looking for a lever / grabbable switch that is semi-hidden in the murkiness of the level.

This leads me on to point two which is that most of the gameplay is pretty stock. There are places where you move away from it, but almost all of the level follows the standard 2-player formats of "2 buttons, 2 players, AND gate" or "player 1 presses button to let player 2 through, then player 2 presses button to let player 1 through". No matter how you wrap those two things up, they just simply aren't very interesting. Pulling a lever in 1 player doesn't make for interesting puzzles (stretching the word there), there's no reason why doing it in 2 player would either (especially in a level that claims to be challenging ).

All in all it's still a 5 star effort, without doubt, on the basis of the visuals and I suppose I am being mildly harsh on the gameplay because of that - the gamplay wasn't bad, I think an appropriate term would be uninspired.

There was a distinct point that could do with a tweak though: When you enter the building with the door that needs to be powered, there is a lever which was not even on screen - we only found it because I was jumping back and forth tapping R1 and I heard my sackboy grab something behind a wall. We genuinely thought the level had broken!

@rtm:

Thanks for ur feedback and i completely agree.. I did focus a lot more on the visuals on this level rather than the gameplay. Having said that, I am always looking to improve my levels and will read shebhnt's blog for some inspiration. Tbh, I did get quite annoyed at myself cos i just couldn't think up some really unique 2 player sets. Still it won't be too hard to rebuild a couple of the (Player 1 moves Player 2 with a switch and Player 2 moves Player 1 with a switch etc) basic sections with something a little more inspiring.

Also, with that lever you couldn't find... i've changed that now to a sensor switch so that's sorted.

Thanks again for your feedback

A few updates:

No switch necessary to access power in the factory.

A huge glitch was accidentally uploaded yesterday- was impossible to finish the level- now been fixed.

Camera angles changed on the closing air ship flight.

Also out of interest, do people think it would be better if unlocked the level?

I'd say leave it another day or 2, to let it build up a more stable base and then unlock with the title edited with a [2p] qualifier (if it doesn't already have one)2010-03-26 14:32:00

Alright, im being bold... and giving it a short time unlocked to see how it does.

It's only on page 22 of cool pages so it won't get much attention there anyway... if there were any of you who couldn't access the level before and want a shot at it, nows your time!

Ok, played the level.

I'm too lazy to write a long post, so...

I didn't have anyone who wanted to do it with me, so I did it myself using two controllers. I really liked the level, however I found the whole level too easy, and the only challenge was some parts where I had to press alot of buttons at the same time, which would have been no problem if I were playing with someone... So yeah.. No challenge at all, and that kind of disapointed me. It's a great level, anyway, tho

Right im gettin the general gist that the level is a bit too easy, and i've been askin around seeing how people think I could improve it.

How would people feel, if the entire level was a race... and therefore the players were instantly put under more pressure for all the tasks.

The race gate could be set in the game... so everyone races. Or only added for people who completed the level with a sticker switch??? Opinions on that?

At first I loved the level, until the bit where a jetpacker lifts a paintinatorer! I was so proud of myself for thinking of that, curse you faster creator!!!

It was an awesome level, brilliant use of 3d glitch, design was spot on and really enjoyed (most of) the puzzles. Special effects were excellent! And loved the blimp!
