A littleBIG Retrospective

Archive: 15 posts

Ok, set the way back machine to say... 3 years ago... 2007. A time before LBP was the next big thing (pun intended) today i clicked on the "Last" button on the page select for "everything else little big planet" and read some posts from 2007. Some rather funny articles came up. Such as will you be able to die in LBP? and Will there be enemies? but my favorite was one where a user suggested the idea of little kids putting up inapropriate images to ruin someones reputation... everyone scoffed at him and said "that will NEVER happen" ... lol.

anyways, my point with this thread is: What did you think of LBP back in '07? Back when we had just gotten a glimpse. Did you think it was the next big thing? Did you forsee H4H? Did you forsee anything? This is just a thread to think about way back then. And to see what you all thought of our favorite passtime.

I didn't know about it? We'll, I think I might have heard of it once at that time. When I first saw the game, I wasn't too interested.2010-03-24 02:23:00

I can honestly say that when I heard you would be able to make games, I had NO idea the extent.

The first real glimpse I had of potential was on a short little video on the PS3 where they showed a person draw a circle, drop it on the ground... and it rolled. Seems fairly simple now, but at the time it was pretty incredible to watch. I had never seen the ability to mold a shape into a 3D object that could immediately interact with the environment.

the ONLY pre release vid i saw was at e3 i think. it had 3 sackboys running thru a firey bowsery castle of doom ( i am sure) and that was it. they said there would be a game editor, but i wasnt very impressed at the time.2010-03-24 02:45:00

I was hooked by the first videos of creating. Even though those videos showed a really small area that had a preset background in which you had to edit. Watching them make things blew my mind.2010-03-24 03:25:00

I think I remember first seeing it at the GDC conference in '07. Y'know, the same one where they coined the term "orange-vaulting". As soon as I saw the whole vid, I was hooked to get it. Also, I remember buying a PTOM magazine that had the dragon Sackboy on the cover (the one that was all gold and white).

Back then, I felt like LBP was gonna be like one of those RCT-esque sort of games, but with fewer sales and a much tighter, friendlier community...

Boy, alot has changed since then.

i wish mm had never sold their soul... the small, tight knit community is a thing of the past.2010-03-24 05:27:00

I remember thinking of it as a platform game with a cool editor to have fun, and nothing else.
I didn't trust the possibilities of the editor. I thought it would be quite simple, and never could imagine the quality levels are build today by users.
In fact I remeber buying the game, finished it, played a bit with the editor, played some user levels... and before Christmas the game was done for me.
It was in middle January when I decided to give a second chance to the editor xD

The first screen shots of the game didnt do anything for me at all lol.

It looked like another psn game until I first seen the game being showed off in demo form on gametrailers. Straight away It was top of my list on games I wanted to play.

The physics engine looked like it would be very fun just to make random things and see how they react with each other, with the sackboy customization being another factor that drawed my to the game. There were alot of comments posted about the vids how they were going to create mario, sonic etc. I thought wow... you can create characters from other games .

Well, I'd never heard of it back then. BUT, when I first heard it, it was my friend describing it to me... really badly . He was saying something about there being 3 planes (3 layers but he never said layers lol) so I was thinking, oh so it's just a plane flying game. Until I went to his house and played it, I was like wow, that's pretty awesome, you can make your own character. (Little did I know, you can make much much much more than that...)2010-03-24 23:22:00

flying fried foods aside, i think that it may have been impossible to see the true potential of this game. or at least believe its power.2010-03-25 22:30:00
