Where do you get your insperation?

Just curious where you guys get your inspiration for your levels. I'vw recently been getting a lot from retro games (80s/90s) I was thinking of making a level with similar gameplay to Sonic 2's Wing Fortress...2010-03-23 21:31:00

I think it's no surprise that I get my ideas from movies... or rather I just rip them off outright. I did create a golf level on the PS3 for the golf course challenge, however, but my groundskeeper character is straight out of Caddy Shack. Video games are also a pretty good source of material for me, although more from a gameplay and pacing perspective (e.g., the Oddworld series). It's not that I can't come up with any ideas of my own, but everyone else's are much better than mine. I do have fun playing the "what if" game. Take something everybody knows, turn it on its head, and see how that changes the story.

(Pssssssst: insp e i ration.)

I don't think that I am really inspired by a specific game, but I'm sure that I wouldn't be making RPG/Adventure levels like I do now if it wasn't for the fact that I have been completely addicted to them since the SNES (I can't say the NES because I wasn't allowed to get into console gaming until the Genesis. But Commander Keen and the old side scrolling Duke Nukem were freaking awesome on the PC in the late 80's/early 90's! ...*crickets chirping*.... hello... anyone??? Yeah, I was still playing my dad's Atari when you were finishing up the NES era. For some reason the Atari didn't qualify as a console). Games like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, The Tales Series, Shining Force, Golden Sun, Zelda, ok... I'll stop, but yeah, I love RPG/Adventures :-) But I have not (and probably will not) just rip off of a game. The closest I have ever come to using a single series as inspiration was Shallow Springs, and I actually didn't try to base that off of Silent Hill. I just added a few elements that I love about silent hill into it (The sounds, the "Welcome to Shallow Springs",...).2010-03-24 14:52:00

My ideas in general come to me in the middle of Latin class. Most don't have a particular origin, as many of my ideas are just platformers with no real story. But my master idea, the real horror level I'm making, that has a few sources. The general insanity of my character comes from the most amazing concept album, Alesana's The Emptiness. I have been listening to this album since I 'obtained' it (read: pirated it). It's quite possibly the best story album I've ever heard, plus they even made a booklet for it to expand the themes. A picture below (from the lyrics booklet) to show just how twisted it is:

So yeah, most of my ideas for real story levels come to me from really scary crap. Don't expect to see real kid-friendly story levels coming from me.

I play my psp alot when travelling such as train, bus or car journeys and I get alot of my ideas seeing things such as scenery which I incorporate into my levels, alot of it helps when making a theme for a level which I can then work around with a bit of good old creativity 2010-03-24 18:16:00

Anywhere at first. But then once I get my idea. I build on it. I do research, I go back to where I got that initial inspiration and see if anything flows in my head.2010-03-25 00:33:00

Great question Fastbro! So where do I get my inspiration? Well, I don't. Inspiration gets me. What I mean is that I don't force myself to get inspired, but rather, cultivate those moments of epiphany. With Zen, I never intended to actively emulate Okami. Instead, it coincided with a class I was taking on Ancient China. It all started with the idea of ink figures on a scroll as platforms, and the story and orbs followed as a somewhat literal translation of Ancient Chinese philosophy.

My best advice would be to pick a tangible object that you find beautiful and interesting, regardless of how others might think of it, and base an entire level on that object: the more uncanny the better. Aside from ink paintings in Zen and exotic flowers in Bird of Paradise, I have also considered Faberge eggs and vector art as foundations for levels. And who knows, maybe you'll see these in the near future!

In my opinion, the best levels come from those creators with the most motivation, a motivation that tests itself during the process of creation. If you absolutely love something that most disregard, you'll not only inject passion to your work but also have a distinct aesthetic from others...

Well I get all of my inspiration here, from other creators(which I thank for helping me), other levels, video games, and other stuff that flow into my head while I'm at school. But sadly, I do not have any official levels published due to crashes that somehow delete my levels from the community moon But, I am working on one. I was also working on a mini-game level, but that did NOT work out as planned. I'd like to thank Taffey for helping me with it, but the 2.04 update just didn't fix the pistons in my level 2010-03-26 09:50:00

I get my insperations from watching reality television shows (Total Wipeout, Ninja Warrior, Takeshi's Castle) like televison shows with contestants that have to overcome obstacles. or I look around the Community Moon, find a level I really like and if I end up hearting it (I usually do!) then I go to My Moon and re-create it and make it better (different materials, better dialog etc.) then I republish it. Or i just think of a level and make it 50% of the time LOL2010-03-28 14:32:00

Oh, I almost forgot my creator influences... defiantly Sha-Ja and jackofcourse, the two best platformer creators of LBP PSP. For specific levels, Subject #117 was inspired by Poo's Shallow Springs, and Mad Mechanism was inspired by FULLGORR's Euphoric Physics.2010-03-28 15:32:00

I play a lot of user created levels. If I see something I think is really neat or that I really like, I'll modify it or create an idea based off of it. That isn't to say I rip off other people's ideas, I just get my inspiration from the brilliant works of others.

Also, sometimes things just come to me. This is usually the case in my levels' stories. Too bad I lost the level I was working on to the infamous corrupted data bug.

Ah, but didn't the original rising lava concept come from 3B? (BlueBulletBill) You should give him credit too.

Recently, I've been getting inspiration from old Game Boy Colour games. Especially Gex Enter the Gecko. 2D games can give some exciting gameplay ideas. I really recommend you guys playing Game Boy Colour games. 2010-03-29 20:29:00

Yes he did, indeed.
Although, unlike I, I didn't know B3 did the exact thing before, until later.
