My contribution to LittleBigPlanet's society!

Archive: 16 posts

LittleBigPlanet really is a super good game. I think it's my favorite of this generation of gaming actually. It's one the games where I expressed myself the most and been active in the community the most (on this incredible forum!). Right now I am taking a break from the game because my frustrations overwheighted my pleasure juuuuuuuust by a little notch. I am also shorter in gaming time with many things going on in my life so it's actually a good time to have "less LBP". Not counting also my enormous backlog of games anyways.

So last week I've been plugging my PS3 in my PC and decided to immortalise my levels and also wanted to create a porte-folio of my stuff anyways. Since I am done with that, I thought i'd say goodbye for now by linking you all to those videos. Your feedback have been amazing and I grew better as a level design in parts because of your love. All those levels also have been splotlighted on their prime time and I am really thankful. I will actually remember this game for the rest of my life I am sure. So let me share with you my contribution to Little Big Planet's society, I will also share some thoughts on my work. If ever you're not too lazy you can also play them. I will be happy if I give some fun to even just one of you people!

Sack's In The City (adventure freeroaming level)

This level was my first I felt satisfied with. It was an interesting achievement for me and while the style didn't take off, it really felt original and fun to people it seems. The level is freeroaming, meaning that you can reach the board when you want to. It's also not linear because it's you who explores and decide wich task you want to complete. I also made sort of a "start room" (even with an optional tutorial), another thing that was very original but didn't take off as a trend

What didn't work so well in there was to explain to the player how I designed the difficulty. I wanted to have easy, normal and hard challenges in there so everybody can find something for their skill. What happened is that everybody were always trying the hardest challenge of all (Tower Challenge) and ended up frustrated. lol
Another thing I personally don't like (even if it's been rarely mentionned) is that there's too much backtracking if you try to do all the quests/task in one go.

Anyhow, all in all I really loved that level and it might even still be my favorite one for many aspects. I filmed each task you can do in the level seperately because it would be too long for mister Youtube.

Ultra Beginners And Girlfriends (platformer)

As I don't like to repeat myself and try to express different things through all my different levels, I thought that this time I should do an easy level. The valentine pack inspired me that one. I thought that kids and adults alike would find waffers, ice cream and chocolate a sweet theme for a "mainstream" level. The level actually succeeded at his job I think. I also held a score contest that went really well. Some people scored amazingly in there! Last thing but not the least, the comments on this level are pure gold. Would you imagine why? Looks like my snarky title (that is pure humor and a love tap to beginner female players and kids) sort of offended people! Amazing I tell you. This was fun times.

I don't have much negatives on this one. Sometimes I wish my main character (that ugly heart dude) would have echoed a little more because I actually created him to be ugly and narcissic in order to crack a smile on those kids and for adults to go WTF. It sort of didn't work that well

Crazy Train! (highscore challenge)

With this level I've taken the "highscore challenge" route but didn't want to do a level that looks like anything else I would have seen prior to it. It was a while that I wanted to experiment with scrolling backgrounds so I decided to do just that. Then I thought a train would compliment my "never ending scrolling background" really well. The end product has been EXTREMELY well received. My most popular and well received level BY FAR. The level also totally created a trend of train levels. It really was cool to witness that.

Not much negative out there either. Except for people that thought it was too hard. But for them I caved in and made a easier version --- that also have been super popular!

Sack's On The Beach (adventure, semi-freeroaming)

When I did Sack's In The City, my plans were WAY beyond what the thermo could let me. I originally wanted a boss and a beach envirronement to land to but I had to cut all that. I guess it was inevitable that I pulled off a sequel at some point.
So here again I went for an adventure level (still a rare kind of level, sadly) but wanted a full fledged boss with a patern ala Contra. I say "ala Contra" because it's a paintinator boss and it's inspired from the first boss of Contra Hard Corps on the Genesis. Another concept I wanted with this level is 3 parts that are really contrasting to each other. So you get a cavern with a Contra-like boss, a village and a Ghost Ship!

It was sad to see this level go on the cool pages though. It came out around the same time as Space Escape and both levels were the first generation of those "awesome 3 stars level" that are now legion. Multiple people also commented on the level about that and were extremely surprised this was 3 stars. Oh well !

A Bark In The Dark (multi-path platformer)

Sometimes you happen to fall on that really cool idea. A stroke of luck or simply a genuine moment, you will never know. I actually don't even remember what inspired me for this one and it ended up being one of my most inspired levels!! I wanted to make a level where you can explore different paths but wanted to make sure you don't lose the "platformer" feel. I didn't want backtracking either and each path had to be really different. Cherry on top is that idea, (genuine or stroke) of making a sidekick to Sackboy. Yup, there's a critter that joins our knitted friend, lighting up the way and giving some advice/directions.

This one is another level that was received extremely well by gamers but not so well by the freaking Cool level pages. Still scored a bit better than Sack's On The Beach though. I received some really cool comments about the sidekick critter too.
An odd detail about this level is that I couldn't even fill the thermometer! I never though I would see this happen but there's at least one quarter of the thermo that is still empty! go figure.

Space Sack's Adventure: The Blue Planet (platformer, metroid-style)

For this one I figured that I never really focused on visuals and atmosphere that much. I thought this would compliment the rest of my creations to, again, tackle something different, more ambiant, more visual than anything I've done before. I inspired myself from the highly atmospheric "Knytt" and "Knytt Stories" (google those free games, its awesome) and made the level progress "ala Metroid" in the mean that you gain abilities in order to proceed further in the level. All in all, I felt it was a winning combination, I really loved making that one.

There is something I won't forget about this level that didn't went really well. You see, I wanted to push LBP players to figure things out a bit more than usual. I didn't want to have hand holding, I wanted to favorise discovery and experimentation. For most people I guess it worked but there is a point where people were always getting stuck: They weren't figuring out they had to blow up the bridge in order to proceed. I tweaked it better along the way but I am still not perfectly satisfied with that part. I can't change it any more though because it would go against the "hand holding" concept I think. Oh Choices!!

So that's it (I guess that's enough). I suppose you all fell asleep already. Now those levels will contribute in finding myself a better job! And me, I will continue to take a break from the game I guess. I am actually enjoying taking that break because it's good for the gaming backlog

You will definetely see me around later though. I am not quiting completely. I will finish my new Swamp level at some point and will probably not resist the game if ever there's another major update (outside the boring motion controller).
Anyhow, thank you ALL. I really really enjoyed the time I've been super active outta here. LBP and you guys simply will leave an unforgettable mark in my memory. Thank you to be so awesome!

Aw man... but hey what a send off for yourself, and a great way to compile your intro-retro-spection. You built a real legacy of great ideas and fun adventures.

Take care, Ranger. Thanks for all the good levels, and if LBP2 does come along quick as it's supposed to, hopefully we'll both see each other on there.

Yeah I'm totally keeping my account here. I'm quiet these days but still lurking.

Tks bud. If a nice update or LBP2 comes around you can bet I'll be there!

It's nice you're enjoying the game again. Isn't it you who did the Mythicos series? I would stop by and try your new levels down the road. Don't underestimate your talent.

Great compilation of your work there, and I hope you find your way back soon... but I thought these kinds of "goodbye" threads were against the rules.2010-03-23 22:48:00

Sorry, Ranger, but unless you can tweak and spin this as not a goodbye thread, we are going to have to close it down. Maybe just take out the goodbyes?2010-03-24 12:58:00

One of my favorites! You definately made quite a few of the levels I spent the most time in - always had a knack for having a "certain something" in a level that always made me feel there was more to see.

Take care! I'm sure I'll see you on the PSN from time to time.

I personally think this thread is appropriate, as it definately represents what many of us have been thinking - quite a few of us "early" adopters have been slowing down quite a bit lately, and many more great creators have been filling in the gaps. It's not really goodbye.... but more of a "changing of the guard".

RangerZero's Sack's in the City was one of the first levels for which I wrote comments on the Spotlight, and is still one of my favorites.

Fair enough... I was just referring to this bit:

Wow... that is one hugely cool list Ranger!! I think anyone who has ever confronted the pop it menu in battle (LBP create mode) would be proud to have such an amazing list of levels as this. Congrats!!!

I hope you enjoy your leave of absence, break, or whatever you wish to call it and glad you are keeping your account here. I wish you a very much deserved a "rest". I think we all need one from time to time. Hopefully after a few months, you will find a short list of levels like from the spotlight or a favorite creator and pop the disc back in and do some happy gadding.

Stay in touch.. You can't run too far as you are still on my PSN list.

Yeah well, the prime intention of the thread is to share my portefolio and thoughts on my work. It's true I am taking a break from the game but it's not that goodbye thread we don't want to see here. I'm still around lurking, will probably finish my level in the making at some point and the LBP2 annoucement excited me.
I don't know, I feel for this site and the people here so I thought I'd share my thoughts and videos + trying to not get completely forgotten during my "vacation".
I also thought it would have been cheap to bump ALL my thread to add the videos...

I had fun with that game. If I ever buy it again, we'll play through it, since I know no one else on my friends list will be willing to tread old ground.

You don't really need to make a song and dance about leaving LBP... I'm sure you'll have the urge to play it again while it's sitting on your shelf.2010-03-24 16:35:00

Ranger,

Enjoy your break from LBP, I've had a lot of fun playing your levels. LBP is also easily my favorite game this gen, but since I like games in general and it's a HUGE time sink I must take frequent sabbaticals to play other things. I'm starting to feel the slight tugs from LBP trying to pull me back as we speak but I must resist until I've finished FF13 and GOW3 first! I don't know what LBP2 will be like...but I want it! I think this level summary thread was a nice idea.
