Puzzle Rooms [1P]SneakySteve1983
http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=14316A puzzle level where the aim is to complete each rooms puzzle to progress to the next.
I've just published a puzzle level and would like to get some feedback.
I recently published a beta version of it and the feedback that I got was quite good so I decided to carry it on.

There are many different rooms and many different doors.
Different coloured doors have different properties. These doors are used to complete puzzles.
For example the white coloured doors need to be activated with a paintgun.

I've gone for quite a clean look to the level using the white and dark wood to make most of the level.
They seem to look good together in my opinion.

The puzzles hopefully aren't too difficult or confusing.

I'll still be working on more rooms to add on to the end so if anyone has any ideas then I would like to hear them.

If you would like me to give some feedback on your levels then leave the name of the level and I will play it as soon as I get a moment.

Many Thanks.

I'm going to try this out! It sounds a lot like what I was talking in my blog post about color (link is in the sig). I can't wait to see what you came up with!2010-03-23 02:13:00

I like that!
Very clean design, good puzzles, in particular those that span multiple rooms.
You strike a very nice balance between too easy and too hard, the puzzles are all very well executed.
The later rooms reminded me of sand palace in Ocarina of Time where Link has to move the mirrors about.
Music was excellent too, very fitting choice.

5 stars/heart.

Played it and it was awesome.
Two things thou, almost exactly like portal.
And the first stage needs some sort of hint, because if u don't know that shooting a Grey portal makes u die and spawn there, u get ****** and leave so..
I almost did leave but i was determined to figure out what to do, and the 2nd room is almost obvious, so its weird that the first room of the level is kinda that difficult.
Anyways, Very good so far, 5 stars and heart!

I definitely liked this level. My only 2 recommendations are that you should probably explain the paintinator in the beginning. I understood what it was for only after trial and error. And secondly, I'd like to see a more difficult sequel 2010-03-23 21:30:00

I have to echo Mango!

I loved this! I like puzzles anyway but yours were done very well and I like your visual style alot!
I agree that some initial direction might be a good idea even though I found out what to do pretty fast.

I was telling Shebhnt that his needed to wrapped in a nice bow...and that is exactly what do have done here. It felt short but that may have been because I was loving it so much. I did think it could be a bit 'flashier' I dont know but seemed to lack some excitment...maybe putting a timer on some of the later ones or a little more Flash to the design.

Over all I really liked it.

I believe I gave it 4 stars Hearted it and gave it a Puzzler tag just check lvl comments to be sure.

Please play Part 2 of my BORG Saga!

Thanks

Great level. The puzzles start out rather easy, but soon progress to more difficult multi-room affairs. The solutions to the puzzles are rather logical, so it doesn't get frustrating.

Visual style is clean, simple and cool.

I wouldn't give a hint that shooting the grey portal kills and teleports you, because at the start you've already explained that different doors have different effects.
(i'm rather interested in how this effect works though!)

Perhaps you could switch around rooms number 1 and 2. (2 being a lot more straightforward than 1).

Very cool stuff, even beter than the betalevel. I'm looking forward to new puzzelrooms.

If you have the time for F4F, it would be great if you could play one of my levels. (Links are in my signature).

Thanks for all of the feedback.
I wasn't sure about putting hints in but now that a few people have mentioned it I'll put one in there.
Swapping the first two rooms is also a good idea.

I'm still working on a few more complicated puzzles that will hopefully be added soon.

@pickled punk. The white/grey doors work by having a large piece of gas fired in and out of the room very quickly.
The paint switch that you shoot is hooked up to the gases piston(one shot) and also to the checkpoint hidden inside the door.
The gas moves in quick enough so that it isn't seen.

I will try and play your levels tonight and will give some feedback in your topics.

Thanks again.

Just played your level and I fairly enjoyed it.
The puzzles started off fairly simple and then became harder as they went on. I really want to know how you made the teleporting work so well.

I've been playing around with teleportation since the game first come out. Its alot simpler now that you can activate a checkpoint with a switch.
I released a level on my old account that used teleportation in a different way.
Its called "Dark and Light" and my old PSN was "SneakySteve83". The same as now but without the 19.
The idea of the level was that everytime you die you switch between two different versions of the same level. One dark and one light.
I plan on remaking it someday using the same kind of layout as I did with this level.

Check my levels tomorrow and I'll put up a little tech demo for you or anyone else that wonders how the teleportation in this level works.

Loved it. I remember playing the beta of this wayyyyy back. Its now a brilliant level. Lets hope the sequel doesnt take you as long. I agree you need to make the first paintinator shot a little more obvious, but I didnt mind hunting around.

My main suggestion would be to make the teleportation system compatible with more than one player. I played this level with rtm and MOST times it functioned fine with 2. A couple of times it went strange, so I'm sure it could work with multiplayer. Drop rtm a note if you need a hand, I'm sure he'd help you out.

I have to say, this is my favorite puzzler on LBP. You've got a perfect balance of difficulty and those puzzles were ingenious. I love the portal feel to the level- imo one of the greatest games. All I can say is that i look forward to a sequel! And thats a heart for you my friend.2010-03-24 18:26:00

Thanks for the nice comments.

@TheAdipose. I'm guessing that it was the blue doors that were acting strange. I'll have a think about maybe changing the way they work.

@ ladylyn1. I've always loved portal and have played through it so many times. Its probably one of my favourite games. I've just been playing around trying to make a portal like system and so far its working well. So far I've got it working with 8 seperate wall panels that can be linked by shooting them. I think that this will probably be in the next puzzle room level.

Thanks again

OK so i played and hearted it. Loved it 5 stars. Very simple and polished, the mirrors were the coolest thing. 1 con, the items on the floor have too much friction and its harder to move.2010-03-24 20:57:00

@TheAdipose. I'm guessing that it was the blue doors that were acting strange. I'll have a think about maybe changing the way they work.

I think so, we got stuck in a constant death loop on our first run through. In fairness, we were just jumping around all over the place. On the second run through we were far more well behaved about acting like a single player so as to not break it and it was all fine

Personally, I loved this. It's very hard to find good puzzles in LBP (and by puzzles I mean gameplay devices that make you think, not "bring the red sponge to the red hole", type affairs). It's even more difficult to find good, unique puzzles and to find something like this, where you have a unique set of puzzle mechanics that all work together, laid out so that you progrssively increase the difficulty by adding in new dynamics PLUS allowing the player to understand and learn the mechanisms for themselves PLUS actually doing it well - now that's something really special!

It's a fantastically well thought out level and I couldn't recommend it more. :star::star::star::star::star: and a heart from me

Thanks for the great feedback.

When I was planning on making this I searched for a few puzzle levels for inspiration and all the ones that I played were just like you described.
I've just been working on a new gameplay device. Its similar to how the doors work in this level but it is controlled much like Portal.

Each door has a panel over it and when you shoot it the panel disappears and that door is activated. I'm looking forward to making some puzzles based on this.
There were a few times whilst making this that I would come up with a decent idea but couldn't pull it off becasue I could only have two doors connected to each other.

Thanks again

wow, one of the best portal style levels I've ever played - and its up there with the best level I've played! Nice work, I was making a puzzle level similar to this, but yours is way cooler!2010-03-25 00:04:00

Okay, I played this...actually a while ago, and here are my thoughts:

This level could be pass as a fantastic Portal level. It has the same visual theme and the puzzles are very reminiscent of Portal. Perhaps if you put in a story somewhere, this level could be even better. The puzzles are set up in very clever ways, you utilized the the whole checkpoint teleportation thing very well. None of them were particularly hard, but some of them got me thinking which was good enough to make me feel satisfied when they were completed. There aren't very many flaws in this level, so the only advice I can really give you is to add more levels, which you already said you would do, and maybe add a Portal-esque story in there if you're feeling so bold. Gave you 5 stars and a heart. Keep up the great work.

EDIT: And if you could give me some feedback on my level, Waffleworld Prologue, it would be greatly appreciated.

i forgot to mention. should do the whole, racing gate with sticker unlock after playing through once. it could make the leaderboards instantly become another element. it fits with the puzzle nature of everything else2010-03-25 06:10:00

I'm still working on a few new puzzles that will hopefully be added soon.
I was wondering if anyone had any some ideas themselves.
I've still got a fair bit of the thermo so I thought I'd see if anyone would like to design some rooms that I can add (with credit of course).
Maybe you played through and thought of something that would have been cool or a different way of using the gameplay mechanics that I've already introduced.
It would be interesting to hear some ideas.

Thanks

It was a little late when I played this, so it took 100% of my brain power to complete.
When I saw the last room did this:

The only improvement I can suggest is in that one puzzle (about half way through I think) where you need to drag 2 yellow blocks from one room to another, when you open the green door, it would be cool if you needed to drag back the yellow cube (from off the stairs button) to the other room in order to advance.
I hope you know what I mean, haha.

A few questions:
- How do you do the R1 > paintinator without the gun being visible?
- What was the "grate" material under the stairs?

Everything else was great! The colour coding was nice to have. Good music choice. Didn't have any gameplay problems.
Usually I'm not a fan of teleporting because you lose points, but in this case it worked because there were none.
Race option is nice, I'll try that out next time I'm stuck for levels.
5 stars, level heart and a creator heart. I look foward to your next creation. Well done.

Thanks for playing.

@midnight_heist
Yeah I understand your puzzle idea. I'm going to include something like that in some of the puzzles for my new portal level.
The paintinator is on a piston below the floor. When you release the grab switch the pistons shoots up and down very quickly.
The grate type material is the "Engraved Metal"

Very nice (or "pure magic", as I called it in my comment on the area). It amazes me what people can do with this. The race mode is a very nice touch -- adds another dimension completely. Probably the most memorable area I've played to date (which is admittedly, all of about...7 days). One of the few areas that I was sorry to see the end of.

Don't really have any constructive criticism. So, um...yeah. Sorry

I played this a while back, it was pretty good. The puzzles were challenging but not enough to annoy me. I also liked how the level had a very clean look to it throughout the level. One of my favorite parts of this level were the mirrors that reflected the plasma balls. Another thing I liked about the level was how the length was just right, but adding more is fine with me. So, overall, this was a nice, challenging puzzle level filled with plenty of fun. Keep up the great work.
