Welcome to the first Storyboard Showdown!

Storyboard Showdown? What's that?

In these contests, the goal is to make a 'storyboard' that animates a series of events. For good examples of this, take a look at jeffcu's ZEN or the launch scene from Taffey's The Right Stuffing. You shape and animate and create a cut scene for your level. Each contest will have a theme which must be followed - and some might have special requirements. Just create your take on the theme, and make it look good. Ready?

Storyboard Showdown #1 - The Fall of Little Big Planet!

The Theme
I'm not gonna give you an easy one to start with, and the ante's been upped. You'll be fighting for a shot to be featured in "The Great Labyrinth"!

Your mission (and you really ought to accept it) is to make a storyboard detailing the events leading up to The Great Labyrinth. For more details on this epic project see this thread. (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=24010-The-Great-Labyrinth) Be sure to hit these points:
1.The level appears.
2. Many try to beat it, but can't escape.
3. The game is hacked - even Cambridge can't stop it!
4. A rescue team is assembled at LBPC, but they are lost too.
5. LBP falls into disarray.
6. The Creator Curators hold a meeting to decide what to do.
Then be sure to have the cut scene release the player - there will be more to the level!

Entering the Contest
That's easy - just publish your level and let us know at the thread. We'll judge it.

Judges
1. "B times 3 = Me" BlueBulletBill
(There won't be any other judges for this competition, I want all of the best to participate. My project's on the line. )

Rules
1. One entry per person! No exceptions!
2. You cannot win two Storyboard Showdowns in a row.
3. Judges cannot participate in the contest.
4. You may not use any DLC that has not been released for PSP. (No Creator's Edition materials!) However, you may use purchased DLC.
5. Once your level is published, no editing! I'll know...
6. Read the disclaimer. or you'll be sent to your room with no supper! And I'll take your PSP too, young mister!

The Disclaimer
By entering this contest, you agree to participate with respect to your competitors. Remember, it's just a game. That means no whining if you lose, no *excessive* bragging if you win, and no attempting to bribe the judge. (I take PayPal and DLC codes. ) If you win, you will be expected to make your storyboard copyable, to be used in The Great Labyrinth. If you suddenly decide you won't let me use it, I'm sure the 2nd place winner will. And he won't be to shy about taking the prize either. And lastly, I've never used VBExp before, so I don't know if I can pay as soon as the system releases. I promise to pay up ASAP and will keep a tally.

The Prizes!
1st: 250 VBExp and a feature in "The Great Labyrinth". Plus, you'll get to judge in the next contest. Lucky you!
2nd: 150 VBExp
3rd: 75 VBExp

The Deadline
All entries must be published and announced (posted here) by 4:00, Monday, April 12th. Eastern Time. (http://wwp.eastern-standard-time.com/) Why 4? I'm home from school about then, and my rents aren't. So no matter what state of punishment I'm in, I'll be free to post.

Thanks
Thanks to jeffcu for the awesome banner!

Good luck to all participants!

Well, judging took quite some time with all the entries I had to choose from.

(Sarcasm detector explodes)

But, as you can guess, we have a winner! Congrats to CyberSora and his excellent storyboard! You'll receive a fantastical 250 Exp when the system is back up, and a feature in the upcoming community project The Great Labyrinth. But, as a tragically deceased pitchman would have said, there's still more! You'll also get to judge the next Storyboard Showdown! Lucky you!

Now, while there may be only one grand prize winner, I still need to give a shout out to Taffey, who pulled away from LBP and making ridiculously funny analogies long enough to submit an entry! You'll be receiving the runners-up prize of 150 Exp.

Thanks to our two participants, and jeff again for the banner!

Rebuilding my sarcasm detector,
B3

That'll be a tricky storyboard - but I like a good challenge! Great idea for a contest B3.

Question for you: Is the storyboard required to be 100% passive from #1 through to #6, or is it possible to have part of the storyboard be active?

For example, the say there's a dedicated intro sequence that covers #1-#4. Then the player is released and dropped into a wasteland (#5) where they are free to move. After a very short bit of platforming they encounter the creator curator scene (#6) and then the level continues from there.

Does my question make sense?

Yes! That'll be great! But, to be fair, I don't think I should judge on the platforming section.

Storyboard interrupts allowed!

I'm glad that two pros are responding already... I was so scared everyone was gonna be like "What, a contest by that noob who didn't back up his save? Wait, look, a new caption contest!!!1!!!" and my contest would fall into the treacherous depository known as a forgotten forum.

Can't wait to see what you guys make!

Oh, and may I ask what the Labyrinth will look like. That way if it's a creepy thing, I won't make a sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows thing.2010-03-25 00:58:00

The general feel of the Labrinth will be based on which forgotten level the stage is based on. But the storyboard, as it details what's happening on LBP outside, should be appropriate to each stage of the story. Therefore if you think an apocalyptic LBP would still look happy, do that for number 5. It's really about how you envision the events happening.2010-03-25 16:59:00

Hello creators! You've got two weeks from today till deadline, so keep up the good work. And if you haven't started yet, well, get trucking!
On the other hand, jeffcu made an awesome banner for this contest, check it out at the top! You bet I've got some ideas from this western theme coming, so be on lookout!

Ya, if only we can upload custom banners onto LBP PSP. Then it'll get creative... and by that, I mean some of those banner levels are gonna be my new wallpapers. 2010-03-30 00:16:00

Where has the time gone? Curse you, succulent community levels, for fast-forwarding the space/time continuum!

Great banner by the way.

Hey BlueBullet, I know this is an odd question to ask, but can I make the level an Introduction level instead of a short-introduction-and-then-gameplay level?2010-04-01 23:47:00

Anyhoo. I finally published a test run of this level. It's called "The Great Labirynth: Introduction (Sneak Peak)". I hope you like it, because it was a pain in the... buttocks.

Finally, my entry is ready to be submitted. I did not get done nearly as much as I would have liked, but the part I did complete I am quite happy with.

Instead of making excuses for myself, I'll just say that my time has been very precious this past month or so. More precious, in fact, than a glass of milk on a planet made entirely out of peanut butter and stale crackers.

With the formalities out of the way, I'll get down to the business of telling you about how my level both interprets and represents the story of The Great Labyrinth. After a quite a bit of dabbling around in create mode and trying to come up with ideas, it occurred to me that the list of points to cover was a little long for my tastes. Because I'm sure the level will be fairly dialog-intensive (to cover all the excellent story points), I felt it would be best to visually represent the story's premise as much a possible as opposed to explaining it outright.

The detail of points 1-5 I thought was very good, but at the same time too cumbersome to explain in an elegant cutscene that will both wow the player and capture their interest long enough to get the message across. It may well be worth explaining all that through gameplay, which I feel would be best for that particular level of detail. My interpretation of the story, and the way I felt it would be best represented in a single cutscene, is to basically skip from point 1 to point 5. The spirit of the story is that A) the level appears and B) LBP is screwed, and that's exactly what I went for.

My level is very short, perhaps 20 seconds at most. I did not have time to create or include a title banner or LBPC logo, but there is space for one. The cutscene shows the status quo, the appearance of the level, and the aftermath in a simple but (I feel) effective way. What I did not have time to include was the appearance of the creator curators to discuss the situation. My original plan was to have a gameplay section where the player platforms through to learn the story, but unfortunately my glass of milk time ran out and it simply didn't happen. I can still work on that for you if you like.

The level is called *contest entry* LBCP Storyboard Showdown, and it is NOT currently published. I need to know how you want this level delivered to you B3... I assume you want it to be copyable, in which case I don't want it to be floating round the community moon for a whole day before you're able to download it. Let me know what time works for you and we'll sync up a quick publish/download/unpublish. Oh, and I'll try to post pictures soon!

Publish it uncopyable for now, that's what CS did. Only the winner has to make it copyable, and that's only so it can all be published under LabyrinthDev, which will be the group's PSN. I like the interpretations of this by both, because in retrospect, this was a little too long of an idea to work with. So I'm glad both of you managed to narrow it down.

So, Taffey and CyberSora are the entrants. As soon as Taffey publishes his level, the judging can begin! PS Taffey, can you photograph Cyber's entry too?

Yeah, sorry Spark, but because this was when the contest section was brand new, there's no excuses! Well, a new and improved Storyboard Contest will debut as soon as I can get some help with real prizes... hopefully one of the adults around here will be able to work with me to provide the usual Premium/DLC reward, so then people will take this seriously.
