Below the Temple of the Sky Orb

The second part of the series. It has a similar mix of puzzle and platform elements and a consistant visual theme but a vastly different type of setting.

This is my second published level and I began experimenting with custom logic and playing around more with lighting. The level actually has a multi-path section that forks based on player actions, but is invisable to the player as both forks reconverge and the story continues. It's nothing major or revolutionary, just something I wanted to play around with.

Looking forward to hearing any comments and feed-back as it is always helpful.

Mark my words people,
if this is his first level..
With some training (if possible from yours truly) this person might have the potential to become one of the bigger and well known creators.
I just hope he has the time for it

he said it was a continuation of a saga so i can only assume this would be his second level or so, but he is really good on visuals...now to play it and see what else it has going for it2010-03-22 02:33:00

I tried this earlier and it looked good and I was enjoying it up until the point after powering up the generator when it just got horrendously difficult.

I think it was the part in your 5th picture. There was electric things to avoid and wheels that crush you all extremely close together and not even an infinite life checkpoint. It was strange because there was nothing anywhere near that difficult up to that point. It went from being easy to impossible in an instant.

@Shadowcrazy - I think Luos is referring to and perhaps intended to post in this thread (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=24097-Temple-of-the-Sky-Orb), about my similarly named first level "Temple of the Sky Orb".

@mistervista - My only metric for difficulty is my family. The major flaw with that is none of them really play LBP so it's hard to judge sometimes. They didn't have any more difficulty with the section you mentioned than they did with the spinning platform section in the first level. This is not to say that it is NOT too difficult, or any comment on your play ability, just a statement of what has become obvious to me now. My sample group is way to small for reliable play-testing, especially in regards to platforming difficulty. I'll revisit the section in question and look at the timings again. As a last resort, I could put in an infinite life checkpoint, but hate to have it come to that.

Thanks for the feedback,

Yea, I meant the first level..
I didnt pay attention.. (again)
still, this 2nd level is also win.

I do agree with vista that the lowering wheels/electric stuff is HARD (me, adi and clara died and had to retry.. )
keep up the good work

I looked this over again today and made a few tweeks. I lengthened the time on the electric block pistons and ever so slightly shortened the time on the roller pistons. This amounts to longer, by a second maybe two, periods of being able to cross two sets at once, and those occurrences in the pattern happen more frequently.

It may still need a bit of work. I intended it to be the toughest platforming section but not completely frustrating. If it makes people quit or run out of re-spawns then it's still too hard.

@lbpholic - Thanks for the positive comments and hope you enjoy playing.

I loved this level. It was great fun to play and, given that it’s only your second level, it really is amazing stuff.

Your visuals are absolutely excellent and there’s more scope for showing them off in this level than in your first. I loved all the machines you built and the little details everywhere like the things on the shelves, the moulds filled with gold, the diamonds and all the bits and pieces in the baddie’s office. The lighting in the mine tunnels was very good too. You really created a great atmosphere for the whole mine/facility.

The level also had some interesting gameplay elements. The section with the electric block pistons and wheels is hard but, especially if you have tweaked it since, it isn’t impossible. What I would suggest, though, is that you need a checkpoint fairly soon after it. As it stands there are still a number of hazards after the difficult section which need to be negotiated before reaching a new checkpoint. None of them is very hard but even so there’s a risk of further deaths. Earlier today I managed to get through the difficult section with one life remaining, then got accidentally squished between two rotating wheels in the next section and re-spawned back at the beginning of the really difficult section. Needless to say with the checkpoint now flashing red I did not make it through and had to re-start the level. That WAS a tad frustrating.

You’ve also got a fun story unfolding with these levels and I’m very much looking forward to the next chapter.

5 stars and hearted (and the same for your first level too!)

I'm no expert as I've only just completed my first level (Infiltrate, Sackboy!). But here are my thoughts. It was beautiful... but extremely confusing. I tried to play it with my step brother and we couldn't figure out for the life of us what we were supposed to be doing at one point (just after we turned on the back up generater and went through the pipes. We looked for about 5-10 minutes and couldn't figure it out and ended up quitting.2010-03-26 01:11:00

This was such a great idea I just had to implement it. The problem I ran into was where to put it and how to work it in visually. I ended up spending some time creating a sticker that covers a re-spawn door and makes it look like the round vent decoration from the MGS pack. This took a bunch of fiddling, copying, flipping, and aligning but was worth it. The sticker wraps completely and aligns very well and the resulting re-spawn looks perfectly at home at the base of the large ventilation area just below the spinning fan/wheels. I was so proud of the sticker I dropped it into the scoreboard as a level complete prize.

@KBling - Thanks for giving my level a try and I'm sorry you had trouble. I believe the section you are referring to has a busted circuit breaker. If you look around on the shelves in the storage area near there you will find what you are looking for.

Thanks as always for the great feedback,

Awesoome level. Despite the difficulty it was designed very well and had good detail. No problems occured while I was playing, but that bit with the semi circles and electricity coming down is a tad hard. Apart from that very good. 4 stars and a heart from me
P.S loved the ending. That phone call part was great.
