10 creators tops (at least until I can figure out if the thermo can handle more)

FIRST EDITION LEVEL THREAD (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=25871-LBPC-Collab-1!-Fifteen-Levels-In-One!)

So I came up with a cool little project idea (maybe someone has already done it?). It would involve myself and 14 other creators to make a collaborative level together. The level would be a sort of showcase of each creator's skills and also be a way to promote themselves and their levels.

It goes like this. I made a basic template of a room. It's very simple... it is a room with an entrance and an exit cut-out on either side. There is also space on top and bottom of the template to hold any necessary hidden logic.

Each creator would take that template and build a mini room that takes you from one end to the other in any way they please. Could be obstacles, short story, mini boss, or whatever you'd like to do to show something about yourself. I would like to have each creator put their name in the room somewhere in whatever clever little way they'd like... so people know who built what.

Room Dimensions:
Inner dimensions: 10H X 23W (large grid squares)
Outer dimensions: 22H X 25W
Entrance/Exit: 2H X 1W

NOTE:
Don't place an entrance checkpoint in your room. I will handle that myself. If you are making some type of survival room, please place your respawn point away from the room's exit area. Also, do not put anything that blocks the pathway of the entry/exit ways of the room. Those areas are reserved for me to place an infinite checkpoint at. You may decorate those areas with stickers and textures but please do not add anything that will block me from sticking a checkpoint to it. Thank you.

Materials List: BASIC MATERIALS LIST ONLY PLEASE!

I will admit that I'm not too sure if 15 rooms would be able to fit within the thermo's capabilities. I would think that if all the creators involved tried to keep their rooms "light" on logic and complex shapes that this could be pulled off. Also, if we were to all stick to a certain set of materials then we may have a good chance of pulling this off.

So, is anybody up for it? Right now this is just an idea... suggestions and further development concepts are very much welcome. Post away. Let's collaborate.

This does sound like something I have also had in mind for a long time. I'm in!
Maybe we should agree on a specific set of materials, because materials can fill the thermo very fast.
Also, what DLC are allowed to use? Water maybe not because that might destroy the other rooms since they are in horizontal line...

The materials should have at least something grabbable, some cardboard, some kind of wood, maybe stone or metal and of course dissolve and dark matter.

Cool... I'm glad we have some participants so far.

@ napero: definitely on the same train of thought with the materials.

I didn't mention before, but the level is designed to go Left to Right for 15 rooms then take an elevator up and go Right to Left for another 15 levels.... so, that being said, half of us would need to design our rooms accordingly.

I will send out some messages to some creators as soon as I get a free couple of minutes to generate more interest. In the meantime, anyone else reading this post, please feel free to comment.

Cool. Looks like we are starting to build a roster here. We still need to decide on which materials we want to use. I updated the second post for the roster and materials list. Also, don't worry about putting any checkpoints in your room. I will be attaching an infinite checkpoint at the entrance to each of them.

Also, @ChamionB: I like the idea of teleportation instead. I've seen it done many times, but haven't tried to do it myself. I there a thread for a tutorial on it? I have an idea of how it works... but it may not be the best of ways. I was thinking... sensor switch > next checkpoint, then emitted gas to make you respawn. Eh? I dunno really.

I would say hold off on it for just a bit. I have certain dimensions to work with in the level and I'm not completely sure of what they are for the elevator/teleporter room. I'd hate to have you work on something that gets scrapped because it doesn't match up correctly.

The dimensions are on the first post. It's pretty simple to create the template. I could, however publish a level with the template in it as a prize bubble... but then you'd still have to recreate it so you can edit it.

I just finished my room but it seems to be awfully large thermo-wise (almost 4 sections of the thermo).
How big can the room be thermo-wise?

Well, the idea is to not be too logic heavy. Did you use a bunch of crazy logic? Or maybe story items? Also, make sure you throw a promo in the rooms about yourself.

Personally, I like polystyrene too... but, for the sake of everyone else, I think a sponge of some sort would be a good idea. I will most likely use dissolve a lot as my grab-able material.

Yeah, I think that would be the simplest way, rather than to try and count off the dimensions yourselves. I will get on that and let you know when it's up. Check back later this evening on that note.

Well, I used a hell lot of OR-gates (29 to be exact), so it was pretty much doomed when I started it.

About the materials, I don't think it's much of an issue. Let's only use the basic materials and everybody is happy.

Yeah, basic materials list would probably be easiest. And yeah.... 29 OR-gates is a bit logic heavy... I gotta squeeze in 29 other rooms in this thing, mind you. I emplore your enthusiasm though!

Okay, okay, okay... ummmm..... So the Material list should be figured out. I liked the idea of just sticking to the Basics because it was just easy that way. However, the Basic Sponge is hideous and the basic stone isn't all that great either. To be honest, basic wood is rather dreadful also. So... that being said I think the materials that are chosen need to be ones that are easily stickered so that we can change their appearance without the texture map getting too in the way.

I suggest:
White Wood
Basic Glass
Dissolve
Dark Matter
Beige Cloth
Rock (that one that lbpholic suggested)

What do y'all think?

Indeed, it is true that the more materials you use the more thermo, but putting in some more materials won't raise it that hard. (i think) My level Cathedral Climb was made with almost only cardboard, total of four materials. It took up to, lets say, two bits of thermo?2010-03-22 21:09:00

Well, I just put up a level with the template in a prize bubble. I suppose I will also make the level copyable.

Just search @cdubb024 to find it.

As far as the materials go, I thought that selecting only a certain number and type would get a bit opinionated here since everyone seems to have their own favorites and all that. So, tell ya what. How about we just stick to the Basic Material List only. I know that there is a lot to be desired by using those ones... but I think that the point of this project is to show the creativity of each creator while being given such a small space and certain guidelines. Consider it a challenge, if you will. Personally, I would like my very own set of materials to work with and wish we could all go nutty with as many as possible... but it just aint in the cards, baby. A lot can be done with stickering and design. I have faith that we can each put together something pretty outstanding, even if we need to step out of our comfort zone just a bit.

Also, I guess I should mention that I don't have all the add-on packs. So, if you could refrain from using the Valentine's Pack, that would be great. I should have everything else.

I will start to building in a couple of hours, but if you can, i will like to go to the level in your moon and check that my section works fine. Dont worry, my 3D elements are easy and dont causes troubles. And these elements will be joined like back layer of the level. in other words, will form part already of my section. Your would not have to work with the 3D. But if you think that its hard, let me put my part in the level. That dont takes to much time for me. 5 mins max.

Yup... the dimensions are set so that you have room to stash your logic and what-nots. Try not to get overly-complicated. Make sure you promote yourself in some way as well. Whatever you want to do.

well, even with only 15 for now, we still need to conserve thermo space. 30 is the goal... but I don't want to have all 30 committed then have to cut them out one by one, ya know. I made a semi-mini boss type room but it is more3 just a bit of silliness rather than any type of challenge. I know it would be nice to make the most dynamic room ever... but we gotta keep the other creators in mind

Yeah, I was thinking that as an option.... I was even thinking of getting another 30 to do a sequel. But since this is the very first group, I really have no idea as to what the limitations are. So, if we all just try to keep things a little simple and conservative, then it would make for a better chance at getting them all to fit.

Blank Background... you can set global lighting at the beginning and end of you level... just make sure you set the end to the default lighting... also be sure to add your music to fit your room as well.

Hey I've been reading through this threads post's and it seems that some people don't fully understand how the thermo works, so just for a friendly heads up I'm putting down the link to the thread created by comphermc which outlines the thermo's limitations. Hope this is helpful to anyone who is worried about taking too much thermo space!

@everyone else involved... I think that moving forward I will be implementing a time frame on this thing. Honestly, with a room this small, it shouldn't ake any more than a few hours to create something. So, that being said... I'm thinking there will be a one week time frame to get your submissions in. I will start this rule as of this coming up Saturday. So that means that I will need to have all the rooms submitted by next Friday. Also, to those that want to participate in the next collaboration project, you might want to get your rooms started now so you have ample time to mod them, if needed. Please feel free to PM me with any questions you may have. And if you'd like to be a part of the next project just post here to let me know. Cheers!

i had a level series like this back in 09. it became too hard for me to handle becuz it was open to all creators... The thermo WILL handle it, but it will only handle 5-10 rooms per level. it was too hard to upkeep, so i sold the series to my PSN friend KagatoAkara

ALSO!!! a tip from me would be to make the room square shaped and a little larger. trust me.

I just submitted my level, I think it turned out pretty great although there is not much to do, it's more visual stuff.
It uses only stone, metal and dark matter. (And 4 stickers and a lot of pistons and sensor switches)

Ok, I got my room finished. It's a boss battle and also a beastly threat to the thermo. Once copied 14 times, my room almost fills the thermo, so... yeah.

My room is also almost identical to a part of my upcoming level: Dragon Slayer.

Mines based around the player 'building' this ramp from polastyrene using the jetpack so the door can open at the end of the room. It's completely gameplay based and it's reasonably difficult. Do you want me to add a skip button, that way they can move on but won't gain any points.

well bowser is like it was from the original mario game, so you don't use the paintanator, you don't have to jump on it's brain. It is just a run underneath it to get to the button that destroys the bridge.2010-03-28 19:18:00

Plus this idea is actually good! XD This is a fun, small room that doesn't take that long and the outcome should be interesting given all the creators have complete creative freedom with a few necessary restrictions. So, sorry I was away for a bit and had a busy weekend. Also, my PS3 got it's first YLOD on Wed night... had it fixed on Thursday, but it then YLODed again after about 45 minutes of play... worst part was it shut down in the middle of me downloading a couple of your rooms... problem with that is I can't see who it was that sent them to me since the message just goes away once you initially try to download the data files. That's not really a problem though.

I just jumped on LBP for about a half an hour and downloaded everything that was sent to me since Friday... and the thermo is holding up thus far. I had about 8 rooms in there all at once and the thermo is just barely over 1/2 way. So, hopefully it will all work out as far as that goes.

I am having an issue, other than losing 2 rooms from whoever sent them (???)... Starting Gates, Checkpoints, and Room Names. I hope I'm not asking too much by this, but could all of you resend your rooms to me? But this time could you name the objects before you send them so I know who's is who's and who hasn't submitted yet. I know a couple of you have submitted with your rooms labeled, but most of you haven't.

Checkpoints.... don't worry about making starting checkpoints.... I will throw those in there myself. I know some of you submitted levels with necessary checkpoints for your survival challenges and what not... that's okay... just make sure that the starting checkpoint is removed... and if you have a finish checkpoint for respawn, please incorporate it into the INNER dimensions of the room. Basically, just don't put anything in the entry/exit area please. I hope that doesn't jack things up too much for anyone. Also, (this should seem rather obvious but I'll mention it as well) if you must add any type of checkpoint into your room to make it function properly (as in survivals) make sure it is a checkpoint and not a starting gate please.

Also, some of you didn't even put your name in the level anywhere... please do so. The objective of the project is to let the player know which room they are in and who made them. This is your chance to show off amongst other creators, you definitely want people to recognize who did the work.

So far the submissions are looking pretty awesome all lined up next to eachother in their different styles... very cool stuff you guys. This is shaping up nicely. If you could all please just playtest your work to make sure it's 100%, label the objects, and remove starting gates then send them back to me, that would be friggin' awesome.

So far so good though... we just need to smooth out the wrinkles and then get this thing online for all to see! Then I will get all the hearts and take all the credit! Mwahahahahahah!!!

Well, as cool as it is, the entrance and exit are at two different heights and the entry way has a slight gap on the floor... it just doesn't fit well is all. Looks good... doesn't fit. Sorry brotha.

Um... I think I sent you a message about the changes needed... but I've been sending tons of messages lately, so I may have forgot. Yeah, there is a couple things for sure, you have a regular checkpoint in your level instead of an infinite one... at the beginning with the first boss thingy. And considering that your room is hard, I restarted twice before figuring it out. Also, the second part, though it is very cool, is rather tough to do. I do like to make rather difficult levels, myself... but I think that frustrating players in this type of project might make them just exit to their pod and that wouldn't be fair to the other creators. So, what I'm saying is... you might want to at least redo the second part with something a little less difficult.

I'm sorry to have to put it out there like that... Believe me, I don't like having to tell people to nerf their creativity, but in this instance, I believe it needs to be done.

So, I've sent out plenty of messages to everyone who say they want to be involved and to seems that nobody else either wants to nor is capable of submitting a level anytime soon. I currently have 11 finished rooms. I want to know how many people would like me to just publish this thing as is. I really wanted to get 15 levels for this project, and it will fit a full 15... but finding creators that are serious about doing this little collaboration has been not 100% successful thus far. So what should I do? Publish or wait?


BTW, thank you to everyone who has gotten their rooms submitted in a timely manner... they all look great next to eachother and this project is turning out well. I appreciate those of you who were helpful in my requests to make any modifications and resubmissions. You are all awesome!

And I know I can make another room rather quickly, so maybe adding multiples from the current roster would be a better idea than just going without the full 15 rooms. Hey, Duckywolf made 3 freakin' rooms... Maybe I will use another one of his as well... all 3 were fantastic. So, yeah... why not? Thanks for the speedy reply Shadow... I swear I made the level copyable and the item shareable. Maybe it has something to do with me having to switch all my info to a new PS3 slim. strange. BTW, clear out your mailbox sucka!

nah that's what the issue was lol...you made the item NON shareable...people can get it...but thats it..they cant send it as a message or a prize bubble...oh well lol just lemme know when you get it and publish the level lol

I thought about that before, but I realllllllly want to have 15 different creators on this. I have other rooms from creators that have already submitted a room that I could throw in there right now, but with only one to go I might as well wait and keep my fingers crossed that someone will come through soon. If this ever gets done, I'm almost 100% sure this goes into the spotlight. It depends on how good the rooms actually are though. I did my best on mine

Well, I'm glad that you had a good time doing this... I had hoped it would come to fruition a little quicker than it has... heck, we still need 1 more room. Once I get it, I then need to make the entry and exit portions and play test everything to make sure it all doesn't fail or break. Hopefully that part of the process will only take a couple of hours to finalize.

As far as the deadline idea goes, I tried making a deadline this time but when people don't follow through on their end there's not much I can do but wait and send PMs. In the end, I can't control what people do... I'm just a guy with an idea trying to motivate, collaborate, and create something that I think would be a special way to show how the LBPC community can come together for something cool.

well here's an idea....maybe make the LAST room a collab room as well?

since people arent meeting the deadline....why don't we get a group of me, you, and maybe 2 others to go on online create and make up the final room? it could be a collab within a collab, know what i mean? anyways thats my idea for the final room...just to help us get stuff done quicker....and maybe the last room could be the scoreboard room too....it may not be 15 creators....but at least we got close to it

Yeah, this was great fun, I might enter the next round. And I'd say this level will achieve a lot with 14 people advertising it.

A collab for the last room sounds cool, a final boss would be brilliant, like we all create a limb or something.

Erm... I'm not one to be overly critical to another creator's idea... but if you would like a personal critique on your room as compared to the other entries, then I would say you may want to think of revamping it a bit. I do appreciate the fact that your room was prepared on time and had the correct dimensions. But, honestly I just buzz through your room whenever I play-test the whole thing because it's nearly impossible to make a bridge out of the pile of rubble given to the player. Sorry. But like I mentioned, you can submit a replacement if you'd like.

Yep... just add me on the PSN when you are ready. Then copy the room as an object and send it to me... unless you happen to be on at the same time as me, then it's better to just go into create mode with me so I can copy it myself. Doing it that way just allows me to corner edit the outsides of the room if necessary to link everything together.

Emitters do tend to take up a lot of thermo, so be careful with that please. Just try not to make the max emitted at once too high.

There is no deadline so to speak but ASAP is the one you should be aiming for lol Just as soon as you can get it done really, it's not supposed to be some mad complex thing just something simple and fun. Maybe a simple core mechanic and that's it. Include your name somewhere and it should be set to be put in with the other rooms. Honestly, as bad as your room is... it still gets your point across and is funny. I try to buzz through it, but sometimes it's hard to try and die. It may look like a pair of clown shoes, but it's pretty hilarious having everything but the kitchen sink dumped on you.
