Resuming the Creator Spotlight

Archive: 123 posts

We've had a number of quality applications, and we've come to a conclusion. We've got two more Creator Spotlights in the queue (by MrsSpookyBuz) that we'll publish over the coming weeks, and then we'll reveal what we've got in store for the future of the Creator Spotlight. I'm going to lock this thread as we've gotten all the applications we need, but we do appreciate all of the willingness to contribute and we hope you like what we've got in store!

--------------------

Since MrsSpookyBuz left, we've missed the Creator Spotlight quite a bit. It's been long enough that I feel it's high time to start looking for a replacement! I'd list the requirements, but comphermc put it very well in another thread:
In addition to being able to put forth the time needed to actually make the Creator Spotlight, it is desirable that you...

Exhibit sufficient grammatical and spelling precision. This is, after all, an article that is posted on the front page of the site, and is representative of LBPC as a whole.
Be familiar with the LittleBigPlanet and LittleBigPlanetCentral communities. It would be difficult to provide in "insiders" view of LBP while being an outsider yourself.
Be willing to seek out lesser known creators. This is an extension of the second bullet above, but is no less important. The Creator Spotlight is not all about stroking egos; rather, it as about providing insight into the lives of the big-name and lesser-known creators alike.
Be fun, funny, and friendly. This a bit more subjective, but your writing style and interview methods should be something that people would want to read.

If you think you've got what it takes, let us know. MrsSpookyBuz wrote some great Creator Spotlights, but if someone else were to resume her post, we wouldn't demand you try to recreate her work. [note by CC: everyone has a different writing style, so we're more interested in a fun new one than one that mimics MrsSpookyBuz's]
So, if you think like you're up for the task and would like to be a regular contributor to LBPCentral, PM your application to me (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/private.php?do=newpm&u=118). All your application needs to contain is a short 1-2 paragraph explanation of a) why you qualify for the position and b) why you're interested in taking the reigns. If we think you might be a good fit, we'll get in touch and discuss specifics.

I'd love to help, except I do want the best for the site and I know there are others out there who could do much better.

Good luck to whoever makes it!

Good luck to everybody who applies.

It's essentially a way for great creators to get recognized. These are usually creators who constantly create quality levels. They also interview the creator and ask questions such as what their favorite level is and why they enjoy creating.2010-03-20 01:00:00

It's great to hear that the Creator Spotlight is coming back - it has been one of my favorite aspects of LBPC since its introduction.

I'm very much looking forward to the return of this feature as well as seeing who will be running the show.

Well, I'm not good at interviewing people, mainly because the pressure of being in the front news and screwing up.Ah, CS - you never cease to make me laugh with your insight. I think we all feel this way from time to time.

That might be a new favorite quote of mine. :hero:

This would be fun to do but I just don't know if I could take the time to do a good job on it. I have a tough time with my film maker blog and that doesn't require anybody else so I can work on it at any time.2010-03-20 04:57:00

Does anyone else think the idea of a teebonesey-penned spotlight would be.... interesting? Sure, we certainly wouldn't learn anything about the creators at all and at points it would likely devolve into incomprehensibility, but surely that's part of teeb's charm? No?2010-03-20 13:32:00

Yes! Not to be taken offensively, but Teebonesey tends to elaborate on one topic too much, along with adding some once-in-a-while off topic details. So seeing Teebonesey doing the Spotlight will actually be quite amusing!

I think that's an absolutely inspired idea! It would definitely get my vote. He may need some "persuading" though...

EDIT: Off topic but how come shropshirelass' post is after CyberSora's when shropshirelass posted first? (See picture in spoiler)

He may need some "persuading" though...

Have you ever actually seen how much persuading it takes teebonesey before he goes off on one? The following is an excerpt from a conversation in the beta forums (here) about how noone really likes going over to the (official) beta forums. Note: There is no beta-specific info here, so it should be safe to publish to the wider world:

Can we send a unmanned probe to the beta forums every now and then?

I say we just bundle teebonesy through the door, hold it shut for 10 minutes and then let him out if (and only if) he's grabbed all the useful info into an extra sturdy hazmat bag. Otherwise we leave him in there for an hour as punishment.

Teebonesy is cheaper and more expendable than an unmanned probe, let's be honest

At least it will keep him quiet for a couple of minutes, thats always a good thing....although he'll probably start a 10 page treatment on how being stuck in a door is pain.

So I went ahead and signed up for this new program, this manned-probe-beta-recon mission. It sounded exciting and would be a great way to expand my horizons and experience while helping out the community to boot. Someone had nominated me for this thing, so why not? I still figured the competition would be stiff, the testing vigorous, and the physical demands incredible. None of my imaginings prepared me for the journey that lay ahead.

I showed up for the application and examinations, and to begin with, the testing laboratory couldn't have been farther from what I had predicted. I imagined a somewhat clean and sterile environment, white walls, fluorescent lights, something like a brand new hospital. Instead it was just some alleyway behind a guy's house. I politely took my seat on a tipped-over garbage can and was asked to please wait. I assumed at the time that the four hours I waited were spent vigorously testing all the other (possibly thousands) of candidates for this prestigious position. Since I had nothing to read, and also since I don't actually know HOW to read, I spent the four hours memorizing the spilled contents of my garbage-pail chair, which I will list now:

• a box of photographs of some fellow, several of which featured him with his presumed girlfriend or wife
• large chunks of plastic and cardboard
• junk mail, envelopes, torn up letters
• milk and juice cartons, waxed
• pizza boxes
• sheets of some sort of paper-board, smeared with grease and multi-colored chunklets of substances both mysterious and wondrous to behold
• about a fortnight's worth of discarded take-out containers, asian food. Some chow mein, uneaten, had turned shades of black and purple.
• a smashed laptop with attached note: "since you love your computer so much more than me, why don't you spend the rest of your li--" the rest was cut off, the note being torn by what looked like teeth marks
• a smattering of clothing - jeans, flannel shirts, boxer shorts
• a broken glass container of glowing ooze
• some sort of small leprechaun, gnome, or gremlin type of creature, small and ravenously hungry, but skittish
• apple cores, banana peels, peach pits, and other miscellaneous compost

these items committed to memory, I was met again by the man in the white coat and a second man drinking from what looked like a beer can. They seemed shocked to see me, laughing incredulously and saying something along the lines of "What in the hell are you still doing here?" I assumed, at this point, that I'm doing so well in the test that they didn't even expect me to make it so far. It was looking really, really good for my chances. He asked me some basic questions, some of them involving mathematical concepts like numbers, and so whenever these came up I just tried to distract him by doing something surprising or amazing, like whistling really loud (though I can't whistle so it usually came out like a spitty blowing). I think this was a good strategy, because he ended up cutting the questioning short - again, I'm thinking at this point, "I've got this in the bag."

So after some more friendly laughing, and calling me some cool nicknames that revealed how impressed they were with me ("Captain Genius," "Albert Einstein over here," "The Brain," etc.), they led me to "the door". I mean, this is big news. This wasn't just a simulation, or a classroom environment or a briefing, or a test, this was the real deal. The door. I was going to be shoved right in there to do the mission, all at once. I mean, I could tell I was doing a really good job in the questioning and testing, but I never dreamed that I was blowing away the competition THAT hard.

The way it worked was, this door was very small, slightly larger than those gremlin-type creatures that I saw rummaging in the trash can, though it was very heavy. So what happened was this: The two gentlemen in lab coats forced the door open and then crammed me inside - I guess I'm a really strong guy and was giving more force than I thought, because they included lots of kicking and even some ear-boxing in the proceedings. But that just told me that these guys were really in it, you know, passionate, making it happen, ready to sacrifice for the team. So that really inspired me, I think, in retrospect. I remember feeling some very strong sensations, and at the time I just let it all out by crying and, you know, sort of riffing with the guys by yelling things like "please don't stick me in there," "stop hitting me", "DON'T!!" etc. But in retrospect I can understand that it was just the overwhelming feeling of being inspired and awed by what I was about to do. So they helped me out a bit with more of the kicking and I think one of them even tried to help calibrate my eyes to the new environment by flicking them really hard. It was interesting, it definitely affected my vision a great deal, I saw all sorts of floating spots that weren't there before. These guys really knew what they were doing.

So now I'm in the door, crammed into the doorway with the weight of the little heavy door itself pressing me into the side. I heard the two gentlemen laughing as they walked off, probably excited about the mission, and one of them must have been so overwhelmingly thrilled about the upcoming results that he lost his grip on his beer can, and it went sailing in my direction, hitting me on the side of the head. With them gone and alone to do my reconnaissance work, I studied my new environment: On the other side of the door was the beta forum - composed of about 3 or 4 people, one of whom was a young child running around showing off as many tricks as he knew. Another guy was asleep on the floor, and another one was sitting at a small table eating peanut butter out of a jar. There was one other person scrawling some arcane symbols on the wall, like ancient runes of some sort, and he was mumbling something about crowns and bug blasters and how "they" are coming for him.

I need to make it very clear at this point that the mission was not panning out quite like I expected. In my head I imagined being something akin to an astronaut, but in reality I felt a little bit more like a piece of gum stuck in a keyhole. Being stuck into a doorway isn't quite as lively or fun as you might expect, and I can break down these unexpected realms into 5 main points.

Firstly, the doorknob was not a round knob, but a handle, like they have in Europe, and its placement behind my right kidney was more than a little uncomfortable. What happened was the edge of the handle was slightly curved, and it hooked into my side and dug itself in real hard. The pressure made me feel like I had to pee, which brings me to my next point.

Secondly, I had to pee. Really bad. I considered my options on this score, and they chiefly consisted of either: A) Wetting my pants, or B) holding it in and risking massive kidney damage. In the end I decided to split the difference between these two extremes, and tried to release small trickles over the course of the ten minutes. This only served to make the kidney angrier. It's one of the prices you pay for being a probe for the greater good, i guess.

Thirdly, the gremlins I saw earlier in the trash can had noticed me, and probably because I was unable to move, they considered I was either a trash can myself, or perhaps some sort of small tree or shrubbery. I couldn't quite see them over my shoulder, but I heard them ("hahee hahee hahee", their grunts sounded), and they had come to the consensus that my pants and general hind-quarters would make a keen nesting ground. They spent the entire ten minutes making several runs between various garbage cans (I sometimes heard the creeeaaak-smash of a new one being tipped over) and myself, vigorously stuffing my back pockets and the interior of my pants with nesting paraphernalia, mainly coffee grounds and filters, mushy materials that felt like cold cream of wheat, and what may or may not have been mango pulp. I'm not 100% sure why someone would throw out perfectly good mango pulp, but this is what it felt like inside my pants, so I had to assume its elemental consistency for the time being. Eventually one of them prized open my back pocket, stretching it to bursting, and forged a type of hammock, which he then treated as a personal sleeping quarters. I tried to open a line of communication to my gremlin friends, at first using speech, and later by twitching as much as I could manage. It seemed to have succeeded, but as I'm unfamiliar with how to properly interpret the physical communication methods these creatures utilize (mainly scratching, poking, biting, snarling - things of this sort), I was unable to continue the conversation for very long.

Fourthly, the act of taking notes about what I was hearing and seeing in the beta forum proved to be nearly impossible considering my physical condition. one arm was physically stuck behind my head, the inside of my arm pressed into my ear making it difficult to both hear and move. My legs felt like a sort of leg pretzel, and the thought of such a thing made me very hungry indeed. My other hand was free, though the arm wasn't, to take notes, which excited me a great deal, and allowed me to focus on my mission. However, I had neglected to bring along a notepad or pen, so instead I wrote the notes down in the air using my fingers, hoping this might suffice. In the end, I'm sorry to say, it didn't hold up. Air writings are far more tenuous than one might expect, and it occurred to me that even if they had worked better than they did, I still didn't know how to read, and so couldn't proofread my notes to check for spelling, accuracy, etc.

Finally, though I have been describing the length of time I spent in that position as "ten minutes", in fact I don't know how long I was there, but it certainly FELT longer than ten minutes. The activities inside the beta forum stayed mostly the same - a child danced about screaming "look at me everybody, i made a airplane boat" and other such fanciful things, the man eating peanut butter actually changed his activity to laying his face in his hands and making sobbing noises (he might have been watching an incredibly tiny tv screen in the palm of his hands, one can never be sure of these things), the standing man continued to scrawl unusual runes into the wall whilst mumbling, and the sleeping man continued to sleep, although at one point he woke up and left and then came back and slept again, and this cycle repeated about thirty or fourty times.

When I eventually got back out, I never did quite determine how long I was there for, but my beard and hair had grown a great deal. I think that if this did in fact occur in the span of ten minutes that there may be something interesting in the science of this doorway, perhaps something that allows hair to grow at high speeds and time itself to seem to go extraordinarily slow. This may be worth checking into, or at least submitting to a scientific journal of high standard.

I learned a lot, and I'm happy to say that the experience did expand my horizons and give me a truly new adventure, and one of those lessons is that things are never quite what you expect. I'm also pleased to announce that I am now engaged to a Miss Grubblegork of the gremlin people, and we are expecting a fertilized laying of eggs in the next few weeks, which they call a "horgling".

But ultimately my thesis here is that being stuck in a door is a pain.

LOL! Thanks for sharing that- it definitely deserved wider publication!

I meant more that he might not relish having to produce something on a regular basis and to a deadline. That's different to going off on a frolic of his own when inspiration strikes but I bow to your greater knowledge of the phenomenon that is Teebonesy. I certainly hope you're right, anyway.

I tihnk you are probably right, and I certainly wouldn't want to put any pressure on him - he's not a performing monkey after all. Far more a monkey who enjoys playing up once in a while

This should highlight one of the points in the OP, whilst MrsSB did a great job on it, the creator spotlight would work just as well with a completely different style, so people shouldn't be afraid to take it on and make it their own thing, as long as their own thing makes for a good read

No, it's not. It says British, English spell checker.

And if my spell checker told me to jump off a cliff, I'd be very surprised seeing as it's not programmed to do that, only to check spelling. So I'd jump off the cliff in amazement. Also, this topic is going waaay off topic....

Whoopsy DAISIES! This always seems to happen - I disappear on one of my 2-week long errands (eating cookie dough in my boxers) and receive a message on facebook, or an email, or some other form of electronic missive, informing me that my presence is being somehow required or requested somewhere for some reason, and the first thing I do is prepare for FBI and/or the Mounties.

So what a pleasant surprise! And thank you kappa, for fishing me out of the seas. Actually, I'm just tickled PINK that so many people think I'd be the man for the job. It's also kind of freaky how well some of you know me (I'm looking at you, rtm, compher, and shropshirelass), as the teebonesy-prophets you have been more than a little accurate in anticipating my response (or lack thereof). I'm honored and flattered, to begin with. But more than a flair for ridiculously wild tangents, I think the job needs someone who's still very actively PLAYING LBP, someone who's aware of all the great levels coming out and blossoming star creators. This is my biggest problem - I haven't popped in that game in months! I haven't given up on it, it's just one of those sad things that happens. But as a result I've become severely out of the loop.

I'm pretty sure I'd have to contact a number of more reliable people on these boards in order to get updates on where the community's at and who should be next up for the spotlight. Which begs the question: Why not just have one of THEM host the spotlight?

Although I'd be more than happy to guest-host a couple, I'm not nearly reliable enough to be a permanent replacement. There's the rub, am I right? You guys know my presence is a bit like a firefly in the dark, or an intermittent windshield wiper, or a pedestrian crossing traffic light, or good Forest Whitaker movies, or that pancake mix in the cupboard (why did they come out like poop cakes this time??). I like to think of myself as a mythological being, like Bigfoot, whose occasional appearance prompts photographs and amazement, but I realize that it's more like that scary hobo that sometimes shambles down the street with a crow on his shoulder and smelling like little baby Satan's diaper. But that's okay with me, considering it's way, WAY more accurate anyway.

I feel like I owe you guys a creator spotlight in the Teebonesy fashion after all the... praise?? (it can't be true, so I'm going to assume for the moment that my vocabulary just broke) ...I've been getting. So, since I'm officially NOT applying, I'm going to go ahead and take the time now to give you good folks the Teebonesy?-brand Creator Spotlight: now in Extreem Cheez flavor.
(Please note that spotlight is not official)
(Nobody was actually interviewed, all content made up exclusively by Teebonesy)
(liability for libel in all occurences below is waived, or directed toward ConfusedCartman)
(writer is not responsible for any damage to limbs, bones, body, or brain tissue as a result of reading Spotlight)
(by reading the Teebonesy?-brand Creator Spotlight: now in Extreem Cheez flavor, you agree to loan Teebonesy a few bucks, because this tax return isn't working out, stupid QuickTax, it worked fine last year... oh god what am I going to do, I can't get the hours I need to pay this off, what happened to my tuition credits? Okay, stay cool man, stay cool. I can get some quick cash scam going on. or Maybe I should just panhandle. Do I know anyone rich? Crap, crap, is that the IRS at the door? Screw this I'm moving to the woods... nobody has to know. Just lay low for a few years and then come back and change your name and fake amnesia. I'm going to come back as Bilbo J. Rubens, and I'm going to work in the dessert pastry industry, designing new kinds of icing flavors. Or maybe I should just get a motorcycle with a sidecar and a sweet dog, one that looks kind of like a woolly mammoth, and then just roll on the road for the rest of my days with sunglasses bigger than my helmet. I could always fake my death first too, that would be fool proof for sure. Dude this sounds awesome. It sounds so awesome I have to use the bathroom!)

rtm223
The Law Breaka
"Interview" conducted by Teebonesy (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/member.php?3340-Teebonesy)

You ever just go up to someone on the street and punch them in the face and then scream at them for a few minutes for no reason at all? Your answer is probably "No," including requisite eyebrow-furrowing and possibly a cautious step or two away from me (the steps are for safety reasons). But not if you're rtm223. Then your answer is to punch me in the face and then scream at me for a few minutes for no reason at all. Why is that, you're wondering? What is it about rtm223 that makes him such a violent rebel and borderline insane criminal? I've been wondering that myself, and I really have no idea. Hopefully we'll figure that out here today, on Spotlight: Diary of a Madman (editor's note: After poor test readings, the Spotlight's title and overall tone was changed at the last minute, so you may see some unusual references to segments that ultimately were excised in final editing.)

Oh God, what is that??? WHAT IS IT?? DON'T PLAY IT!!

The Low-Down

Question 1: What's up?
Not too much. Staying busy for the most part, I'm working on a few new ideas in LBP. I'm not sure if I'm going to implement them into a level, but I know there are some creators out there that could use them to great effect. By the way, you used demitters and remitters in your City on the Sea level, didn't you? How'd that go for you anyway?

Question 2: Oh, I actually cover that in Question 6, so we'll get to it!
Okay then.

Question 3: Wait, what the hell happened to question 2? What did you do with it!
I don't know! You used it to tell me to read Question 6!

Question 4: Crap! This is not going at all like I planned.
Sorry, is there anything I can do to make things easier?

Question 5: Just, shut up for a minute, I'm thinking, I'm thinking!

...
[5 minutes pass]
...Teeb?

Question 6: [Teebonesy punches rtm223 in the face and then screams at him for a few minutes for no reason at all]
Aaah! What the hell!! Does this mean you don't like my demitting logic??

Question 7: That **** was over my head man! I had to sink the ship and have underwater versions of rooms, so I had to have the new room emitters emit diagonal rooms at exactly the right location, but it kept changing for some reason! RRRRRGGHH!! WHY DID YOU DO THAT TO ME??
Look, I'm really sorry! It's not my fault, really! You could have just come to me for help, you know!

No, no, you know what? Forget it. I'm fine. We're going straight to our next segment: Anatomy of a Killer, where we examine secret photographs I've taken of you over the last few weeks, some of them in very private conditions.
WHAT??!!

-----------------

Digging Deeper

[Editor's note: The following segment was created after the rest of the Spotlight when, after doing the post-test cutting of segments, we discovered the Spotlight was far too short.]

Uuuuh... [Teebonesy reads from a card] Yy... Y... Yoow... Yow... a... aair... kuh... kuh-naauuwn... as a... LLL... LLAWWW...ggick... geh... geh-n-eye-ows...
...Are you okay? Is the card difficult to read? If you want, I can give it a shot.

[Teebonesy stares at rtm at this point for a few minutes before slowly handing him the card. It's worth noting that Teebonesy has a black eye and stitches on his forehead.]
"You are known as a logic genius. Your creations have helped so many creators realize their ambitions, and you're one of the best designers of efficient LBP mechanics around. Where does this come from?" Huh. I didn't see anything wrong with--

Oh, thank you for those kind words! Well, I wouldn't call myself a logic GENIUS, but yeah, I guess I'm pretty smart. I'd say it comes mostly from my upbringing. When I was --
Wait, wait, no Teebonesy - that's what was written on the card, it's a question for me. I wasn't asking you that, you were asking me that.

[At this point Teebonesy pulls out a second card.] Yy... Yyew... c... creeee... KREEEEEEEE..... KREE!!!
Teebonesy, stop, stop. It's okay. You don't know how to read, do you?

...No...
That's okay. We can change this up as much as you want. Do you want to just have me read the cards directly?

...No...
Okay...
[What can best be described as a melding of great minds occurs next. The two great men sit and just understand each other, regarding simultaneously the same deep and silent questions about life, about the truth of the cosmos. Dear readers, you must now imagine this incredible psychic interview for yourselves. To look at it, you might only see Teebonesy with his eyes closed and head drooping, drool emanating from his mouth and occasionally snoring. rtm223 appears on first glance to be awkwardly waiting, shifting in his seat and wondering what to do, until he finally clears his throat loud enough to wake up Teebonesy. But really, they were doing all that cool stuff I said before. Hey, are you still reading this?]
Teeb, are you awake?

Wh... where am I??
Listen, your producer told me that you guys are cutting that segment with the photos, right?

...Yes...
What were you THINKING? After we finish this interview I'm taking a restraining order out on you. Give me one good reason not to.

Um... Because I would break into your house while you were sleeping and then put various hats on you and take pictures?
No, no... I mean... Give me a reason why I WOULDN'T... No, you know what? Don't worry about it. I'm definitely filing for that restraining order.

YAAAAAY!!
Jesus.

Dear Teeb,

It occurs to me now that 'they' (yes, 'that' they) were wrong for ever getting you involved with the spotlight in the first place... Surely you realize that the MEDS were dispensed for a reason-- If not for you-- then for those around you. If it's the tart, tangy, tongue-stingy lesions, often associated with the script-- might I suggest accompanying it with a 'spoonful of sugar' dissolved in a petite stemmed glass of room-temp Merlot.

After the glass shards work their wonder you should have little worry of any lesions.

Mostly Warm Regards,

Gravel

The only problem with Teeb doing it is that it would need renaming. 'Creator Spotlight' wouldn't work anymore. It'd have to be 'Interviewer Spotlight'. He'd just upstage the creator every single time! 2010-03-22 23:45:00

@Morgana: If I ever get a show off the ground, consider yourself a front-row ticket-holder for life. But I should warn you that the front row IS the "splash" zone, and if you're allergic to watermelon, jalapeno queso, or bee stings, you should probably bring a plastic poncho, umbrella, safety goggles, and/or bee-keeper's uniform.

@IceMaiden: Yes, you CAN have my autograph! I wrote it on a post-it note and stuck it in the mail with a second post-it note stuck on top of it saying: "To Icemaiden". I didn't have any stamps so I stuck a third post-it note on top of the second one with a note to the mailman apologizing for the lack of postage, but if it's cool could he/she just do me a solid and just have Icemaiden pick up the bill, after all it's just one measly post-it note after all, not some huge package. So expect it in the mail shortly! Sorry about the lack of proper shipping, I just didn't have the resources available.

@rtm223: Yes, you CAN have my babies! I've shipped them first-class in the mail, including all necessary postage.

@Gravel: Thanks for the wise and healthful advice. As soon as I parse out exactly what it was, I'll let you know how my digestive tract has fared. In the meantime I'm just going to eat these glass shards and drink this booze.

@jackofcourse: The "ONLY" problem? I had a list commissioned of the various problems that might be a result of my being given any kind of responsibility at all, and when it came back to me (I expected a two-page staplejob), it dwarfed the Codex Gigas, was bound in demon-leather with eroded platinum clasps. They call it the "Eternal Woeful Litany", and all are forbidden to look upon it. But I mean, the problem you listed is probably in there somewhere.

@Teeb
That ultimately upstaged the post rtm showed to us earlier. I would praise and compliment you, but too bad you don't know how to read. If you do happen to get some man off the street to read this for you, I will admit you are hilarious. I right now am talking to the man on the street right now, not you. Just talking to you makes him hilarious.

But seriously everybody, can we compile all of Teebonesys posts and turn them into some sort of new Bible, and create a hugely popular cult, the Teebonesites? With Teeb as our God and rtm as our Pope? Comph can be the adviser to the Pope, (whenever the Pope randomly punches someone in the face and screams at them for several minutes) Any takers? No? I have pictures of what our God probably looks like:

Shame teebee can't replace MsSpookyButt, he'd do a fine job I think. But if he did, I think many of us would forget who was being spotlighted by the end of the interview, and that eventually it would turn into a punishment for users who violate the site.

We've definitely gone a teebsy bit off topic, but I blame rtm223 completely and accept none of the blame personally.

But for reals though, have there been many applicants? Is it too much to ask of a member of the Level Spotlight crew to take on the additional duties of Creator Spotlight? You'se guys are undoubtedly the most in-the-know in regards to great levels, and by extension great creators. From the standpoint of who would make the best interviewer, someone who's both engaged actively in the forum as well as in playing so many of the great levels - you're just not going to find anyone better suited for the task than a current spotlight crew member.

Of course, that being said, it's a lot to heap onto an already-full plate.

comphermc or Morgana I think would clearly make absolutely top-notch spotlights, being perhaps the 2 shiniest leaders in this communal batch of crazies. but you grown-ups and your jobs and your "responsibilities" and your goings on, am I right?

Another hefty attribute to a great interviewer is a genuine fan. Someone who just loves playing great levels and appreciates and admires the work and craft and level of insanity it takes to partake in this business of level-makin'. that's what was so great about Mrs Spooky, is she would do insane things like replay (yes, RE-play) every single creation of every single creator she interviewed before diving into each spotlight. I think she was a genuine fan of every creator she interviewed, she was devoted to learning their entire level-ographies, and you really get the best questions that way.

Not that such robust research is required of her followup, they are mighty shoes to fill.

I say we do it lottery-style, and whoever is picked HAS to do the spotlight, and if they don't, they get "the treatment".
YOU know the one.

I'll get the onions.

Teebonesy, I'm so glad I sent you that message now. lol. You really WOULD be brilliant at doing it. I'm wondering if a Creator Spotlight Crew should be instated rather than just one person. Hmmm... a team could be cool actually. One of my issues with doing it was there are weeks I am not around at all. I would share the honor with Sara in a heartbeat or two.

My issues are similar, jww. I'd love to do it, but there are times when I have to stop everything to work on the comic.
Also...

It's easy to get overwhelmed doing something like this, i mean, imagine the community spotlight if only one person was playing all the levels. If there were a team of maybe three writers, they wouldn't get overwhelmed.

And I guess this is me throwing my hat into the ring ^_^

If the team option ever actually becomes a reality... I too would be very interested. TBH, I was going to apply but fear I could let the community down... Not that I wouldn't be good at it-- quite the opposite really, I just fear that the responsibility may get overwhelming in an already busy life.

Here's a PM I recently received... (from myself) in which I apparently express interest yet think better of the application and chicken-out. Sending 'THE APPLICATION' to myself rather than onfused artman;

I have some interest in reviving the Creator Spotlight but have no interest in emulating Spooky at all. In fact, while it is indisputable that the LBP community in general and LBPC specifically owe Spooky a debt of gratitude-- I always inwardly found her interviews a tad bit monotonous. It takes a good deal of effort to make the most creative people in a community seem stale. Although to her credit, she did manage to keep the spotlight focused squarely right where it needed to be.

So why me?

Well, I'm honest, I've got a sense of humor, and I can craft an article that will be insightful and entertaining while still keeping the spotlighted creator front and center. Many, many, years ago I was an English major (more for the creative exercises than the actual grammar) and have a degree on the wall to prove it. I'm a little older than the average bear, offend equally, and am a member of no central cliques.

Ideas?

Hells yes. First and foremost- if she's willing- Spookybus should be the first 'new format' interview as a proper send-off and Thank You. It's a respect thing-

Next, I would give the community a voice to recommend potential spotlight canidates yet make the decisions myself beholden to none.

I would like to post upcoming interviews in a thread and get the communities' take on what questions should be put to these creator. I would then take my favorite five community inquiries and split them with my own five forming "The TEN". The article would then be crafted from these ten questions.

I would suggest a 3 month trial basis, (6 spotlights), so there's no hurt feelings if either party is dissatisfied.

I would need to be made aware of any changes/edit to my writing before it is published. [your last edit still stings...]

Bi-monthly wording would have to be changed so I can properly keep track of upcoming deadlines.

The letter 'C' would have to be stricken from the English alphabet...

So what do ya say onfused artman?

Gravel

PS. Obviously this was to be a PM or 'Private Message'. My thoughts in making it public are simply this... While I am interested in the job, I do not posses Spooky's drive, responsibilty or passions. Frankly, all qualities which raised her above me as a creator and member of the LBP community. I in no-way mean the above as a insult or back-handed compliment... Lisa was great at what she did! (Even though I didn't always appreciate the outcome) I most assuredly respected her efforts, and understand it was her 'inspiration' that got the spotlight shinning.

I'm in Uni at the minute so can't say much but I do think Gravel would do a good job.

I dont' agree with a few of his suggestions however. I'd much prefer who the next Creator Spotlight is to remain a secret to the community. That's part of the fun, waiting and seeing who is next. If there's a list and everybody knows it takes a bit of the mystery out of it.

While there's no harm in getting question ideas from insiders (the mods would be perfect for it) I think as a whole the community shouldn't know until they are released.

I also think whoever does take on this task shouldn't do so lightly. Before questions are thought of and articles are written, all the levels by the creator in question should be played and analysed once more. I know that's a pretty obvious thing, but I felt it was worth mentioning

I agree with Jack. I liked the creator spotlights being a surprise. It always gave me something to look forward to.
And jack is right about not taking the task lightly, either. It's very important that the creator's work is thoroughly analyzed before writing up the questions. Otherwise you'll be interviewing someone like jack and asking him why he likes to make RPG style levels! :O

I think what Spooky did well was have a good insight into each creator and know exactly what made them tick.

We can all look at a level and say that it is good. However sometimes being able to spot the subtle nuances and say why it is good is a different task entirely.

The person who takes this on will definitely have to have a good insight into more than just this community. Being able to see what the creator is about as a whole, as well as being able to see what they were trying to achieve with specific levels is a massive part of it.

I still want Ninja to do it. He has incredible insight and can get that insight across like no other!

I tossed my hat in as well.. This was before Gravels post, but the thought of doing it as a team with Sara as well as a 3rd like either Gravel or Teebonesy would be pretty sweet.

However, I have to agree with Jack a bit. I enjoyed the surprise of who was next. When Lisa was doing these, at least towards the latter ones there was already a bit of nay saying of lesser known creators not getting a shot. I would hate to see what kind comments you would get even before it started. If it were simply members of good conscience, sure.. I can see what Gravel is going for, but I feel that could only work in a perfectly responsible group. Not in a group with 1400 some odd active members. Not saying how many of those are odd, actively odd, or excel in oddities.

Considering the OC contest thread and now much drama played out in that, I can't see it happening nicely to be honest. Though maybe the crown frenzy was partly to blame.

I would like to see this to celibate the amazing talents of amazing creators regardless if anyone has heard of them or not. I think part of the issue with Lisa's was with starting something new, you almost HAVE to go with some known names just because they are so darn good. That and if you didn't interview for example Wex, Jaeyden or Kiminski well... you'd be considered kinda silly!!!

However, I think it would be cool to be able to submit names for consideration to the team or person that ends up doing the Creator's Spotlight. If it were me for example, I think for the most part the low lying fruit for this task would be delving through the spotlights as well as my hearted levels and creators looking for some interesting as well as entertaining folks to ask some questions. I think I would also ask for some recommendations from the Spotlight team, CC, the mods, as well as some folks here on LBPC that I value their opinion highly and that are really good at staying in touch with all the talent here in the community.

Absolutely agree with jack's post above. If your aproach the ths interview is "this creator makes fun levels, let's talk to them about it", then it's really gonna come up short. What makes the spotlight interesting and valuable is the added depth - MrsSB pushed people to genuinely tell us about themselves, so you got to see something you otherwise wouldn't. Ability to choose the correct questions for a given creator is just as important as writing style IMO

I still want Ninja to do it. He has incredible insight and can get that insight across like no other!

Ninja would actually be my favourite for this, all things considered.

I agree, rtm. Spooky got to know many things about the creators personally. That's very important here. You can't just pick someone like ... say teebonesy and say "hey, teebonesy, you make rad levels, discuss."

The questions would need to be a bit more indepth than that.

Hey ya know what? I'd like to see the Creator Spotlight start up again. I think Sara, Ninja and especially Jww would do a great job! You guys all get my votes. I know I would enjoy those posts immensely. I just posted some thoughts to show I was thinking seriously about the spotlight. They were just suggestions, as there was some gruff and scuttle-butt in the past... I'm all about more involvement and representation of the masses. I thought it would be neat if the community could post suggestions and questions-- fostering some much needed unity in this comm'unity'... If there was a suggestion pool you still wouldn't know who was coming up next-- it would be at the discretion of the crew. They were just some suggestions for me, I never sent the PM... (now the discussion my suggestions have generated leave me feeling a little [gulp] vulnerable...) I was just trying to be of some help. If it were a team effort I think it would have to be somewhat different, but a format would have to be established nevertheless. With that said, I think you are making too much of the questions. If you can't tailor-up five questions, write an intro, and incorporate some community interests and sew it up in a conclusion there's no need to even enter the Octagon! Even 5 tailored questions per spotlight would be an improvement over no tailored questions. Am I the only one to ever get to the 'digging deeper' and think, "oh, thank goodness!"2010-03-23 18:08:00

I'm not sure I like the idea of a group doing them, I'm not sure why. I think it may be that they might lose the personality and become a bit generic. While I definitely feel that having a handful of people who would help come up with questions and possible things about the creator that should be highlighted is a good idea, I do think that the same person should be the one who actually writes it up. Just to keep some consistency there.2010-03-23 18:29:00

Well, the only reason that I suggested the group thing is that there is definitely more than one person around here that really cares about these spotlights, but it can be overwhelming for one person to do alone. The way I see it, if there were a team of 3 people, it would take the pressure off of any one individual. It would also reduce the angry emails that any one member would get for not spotlighting someone.

Also, by group thing, I didn't mean three people writing one. I meant 3 people rotating. Writer 1 would write the first one, Writer 2 would write the second one, Writer 3 would write the third one, then repeat cycle. That way, all the writers would be able to take a break between them.

Honestly, though, it was just a suggestion. Whether or not I'm a part of this is immaterial as long as it gets put into the hands of a person or people who care. That's really all I care about. I just don't want to see it handed off to someone who doesn't give a flying eff about the creator.

Personally, I could definitely easily write up a few spotlights, but I don't have the time to do as many as I'd like to. People have busy lives. If you've got two or three people working on it, each person could put forth more time and effort on the individuals they are assigned. Those are just my two cents, though. And I'm no one. ^_^

I will say this, though: I will definitely help if I am needed.

I don't think this is off-topic just increasing the scope.

Back before there was a Creator Spotlight, back before he took over the Caption Contest, back before he left... A good Belgian friend of mine asked me if I wouldn't mind playing second banana to a certain Sir Sack in a parody of sorts of the Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. I was as honoured then, as I am now recalling the moment. Although I'm sure our ideas were worlds apart on the project... he saw it as a caption/Carnac thing... I saw it as... I always secretly believed that 'our' Tonight Show morphed into what absently became the Creator Spotlight. I say that with no mal-intent or accusation in my heart. The Tonight Show to me simply became... redundant and Zwol as he was apt to do, moved on.

With that said, my mind now wanders back to those waters and wonders if in-fact the written word is the most entertaining medium for a Creator Spotlight. Could you imagine Teebonesy, Ninja, Jww, Sara, or Me (or You)... Sitting behind a s****y (why on Earth is S W YANKEES censored?) set design guest hosting the Creator Spotlight... There is something magical about the moving image. Something captivating about 'live' entertainment... It actually represents LBP better... anyway, maybe it's something different... maybe not... Just thought I'd drop some names and toss some ideas into the air as we seem to be entering uncharted waters. I mean wouldn't it be interesting interviewing Jagrevi on the set of his soon to be released mammoth project Barbara Walters-style. For all I know somebody could already be doing it... for all I know your jotting it down right now!

Just seems like it be a less than 10 minute investment for the viewer and be 10x more insightful. Seeing is believing! Show don't tell! Print is dead!

I though the team would actually be a good idea, as it widens the scope of candidates somewhat. If you have a broader viewpoint on the community then it's likely that we will see more of the "less obvious, but totally deserving" creators spotlighted and that to me would be a good thing. Also, if you ran with the system that the person who's the biggest fan of the creator in question actually ran the interview, you'd get the enthusiasm that is required too It could work, with the right people in the team.

The team idea's fantastic, and even opens the doors to even the "guest host", someone outside of the regular team that could just do one or two and then move on.

It also might foster a tidbit of competition, each host hoping to one-up the last and adding in that extra feature or idea, keeping the spotlights always fresh. For example, seeing, perhaps not as a replacement, but an additional feature, something like Gravel's idea of poking around a creator's latest level with the creator giving a bit of commentary on the way.

It seems all agreed to me that this team idea would be grand. Maybe we should re-send applications to be part of a team and let Confused Cartman do the honors, or just figure it all out here. There's already a fine group of people who would be willing to do it as part of a team, doing one spotlight a month or maybe two every other other month, or some such business. They could even work in tandem, generating a good thick pile of spotlights in case someone's late on deadlines.

I like the team concept as well. Hmm, maybe we could even slip a PSP Creator Spotlight in there from time to timel.

If we do the team thing I'd be interested in helping out. I don't have boat loads of spare time but I do love LBP and I enjoy writing.

I like that idea, Taffey, because there are many creators that only create on the psp, but still turn out brilliant levels.

The team thing would also nicely eliminate the need for a thread like this. Nothing against Lisa at all, she had her reasons she had to leave, and I respect and understand that completely, but since she was doing them on her own, they ceased to be once she was gone.

If there were three people doing them, four people, whatever... Then if one person dropped out, the site wouldn't take as big of a hit.

Alright, I've been following along, intently, blow by blow... and how's this for an idea...?

We set up a sort of Creator Spotlight team. Say 3-4 people. It wouldn't be a problem setting up private forums for such a team... it could very much parallel what the site has done for the community spotlight and the logic pack (while it was under construction) for quite some time. The teams are "responsible" for putting together a Creator Spotlight once every two weeks (or 4 weeks, if it takes too much effort). The team, then, can decide how they want to format the spotlight... whether it be an over-the-top game-show format, a more laid back delve into a creator's head, or whatever.

The team, then, can decide on how it wants to handle who gets to interview. Perhaps it can be a group effort to review the creator's levels and discuss how they should approach the spotlight. Then, perhaps there can be a rotation of actual interviewer... maybe 1 or 2 at time. This way, nobody should feel super-pressured to crank out a spotlight every fortnight.

It might also be interesting to nab someone who is capable of doing video. Maybe an insider's look into the creator's levels... maybe just a recap of some of their levels. Whatever... this would be at the discretion of the Creator Spotlight team.

Then, more important, on the issue of choosing who to spotlight. I'm fairly certain we can set up some sort of nomination process. This way, we can get feedback from the community as to who they would like to see spotlighted, but it would remain a surprise to all those not directly involved. The process for nomination can be handled either through PMing a Creator Spotlight username... or via a nominations thread.

Also, not to mention the added benefit of 3-4 minds working together to provide an array of perspectives. Thoughts on that?

I have sent an application, I am all up for this, and if there is talk about a group, I will cooperate happily. The more the merrier, right?

I'd just think I would post my application here, and please post your opinions about it, I love feedback:

Hello ConfusedCartman!

Here is my application for the resuming of the creator spotlight, I hope this will catch your attention.

Even though I do not origin from an English speaking country, my written (and oral, if it will sometime come to that point) is excellent. Being THE interviewer might be a tough challenge, but I will be able-bodied. Or maybe it should be able-minded? I am both, luckily, do if one of the tests later on involves fighting a dragon, I will have a chance.

Anyway, I am fit for this job, and I would really like to contribute to this forum as much as I can, because of all it contributes to me.

I also get these thoughts about different setups for the each interviews, maybe one could be formed something like this:

1 ft (foot): Scratching the surface

2 ft: Digging deeper
...
6 ft: The downside

I have also got ideas involved planets, or bugs, if you are interested!

Yes, it might be a little short, but I hope it is good. If your eyeballs have fallen out (because my application was either good or horrible) I suggest you go to the doctor... But if you can't see this post and read this, why am I writing any of this?Never mind.

I'm wondering if a Creator Spotlight Crew should be instated rather than just one person.

I think it's pretty obvious that I agree with this. ^_^
it all sounds good to me, compher. Sign me up.

And as long as I'm not doing this every day, which if there is a team, i wouldn't be, I can record videos of the levels if need be. I may be an old fart, but I still know how to use the youtubes.

True, but I don't think it would hurt to entertain some PM'd suggestions. Not so much of a "to do" list, but maybe just to insure the team is aware of more than their particular scope and perspective at the time.

I think what Comph said sounds good.

I think my issue with the group doing it is is merely because it felt like some people wouldn't be able to do yhe full job due to real life, but was willing to do 'a bit' where they could. Which obviously doesn't sound very committed. That's not their fault exactly, but I was just going off the assumption that it's better to have one person fully committed than a group of people that's not as interested.

But when you word it like Comph has, and if the group are all up for it as much as he has put forward there...then it sounds like a winner.

[This is worded really badly, but I've just had a full day in the library and I've had enough of typing! Hope you all get my point ]

I understand your concerns about that sort of thing, jack, but know that if I were chosen, I'd give my absolute best to each and every creator I spotlight. I came from humble beginnings where I had to beg people for plays, so doing this sort of thing, and doing it right, is very important to me. If you want an opinion from someone in 'the wider community' who has no interest in putting their name up for consideration (i.e., me!), then here it is:

I think the group idea is the way to go. It makes sense and to me it doesn't give the impression that people aren't committed, it's just wise sharing of the load. I'm sure the team would be very committed to the edition or area they were responsible for. Putting these things out once a fortnight is a massive undertaking and, as experienced when Lisa departed, if life steps in and the one person can no longer do it, you're back to no spotlight, whereas a team would keep functioning even if somewhat depleted, PLUS it has the added bonus of new, really enthusiastic people potentially joining the team as they come to LBPC. Win/win, imho.

I don't think we need to decide or vote on who we'd like to be interviewed as that could get messy, but I would welcome the outlet for PMing questions for certain creators in the event that they are interviewed at some time. Plus, I think Gravel's suggestion of taking it an audio visual level is a terrific one. I'd love personal tours through some of these creators levels - like a director's commentary. Woo!

All this sounds promising...I'll chuck another two cents in.

I agree with rtm and babydoll, an open nomination thread or suchlike for choosing the spotlightees (?) might bring a competitive vibe to it that i think needs to be avoided. Choose the Crew, and let them run with it, they're the ones doing the hard work.

Also, can the interviews potentially be a tad longer? I usually finished the old ones wishing for a lot more...

Agreed, I don't think anything to do with the Creator Spotlight should be open for discussion really. Like it was, if you want to recommend a creator to be spotlighted just PM CC or whoever gets the position of chief interviewer!

Teebonesy, would you actually be up for it or were you having some fun?

Believe me, I was definitely having some fun! I'd certainly be up for this on an occasional basis. Basically an occasional contributor, a spotlight every two months-like would be ideal for me because it gives me breathing room for my constant disappearing acts. There's no way I'd be able to muscle the kind of passion spookybuz put into the regular feature, but to be able to look forward to that ONE spotlight you get every once in a while, that's an exciting idea. You could put extra time into it, even while another writer is simultaneously working on theirs. There's the potential for spotlights with much greater scope.

And certainly don't expect anything that comes from me to even REMOTELY resemble that surreal piece of work I laid out earlier in the thread. I'd certainly have a bit of fun with the interviews, but it is called "Creator Spotlight" - the best interviewer is going to make the feature about the creator, not about the style of the article or some such. So mine may end up being quite straight-forward if I actually got around to doing it! But it is an exciting thought, just to be a part of shining a spotlight on all you talented jerks doing your thing.

It'll be interesting to see what happens soon, I'm definitely looking forward to seeing juices begin to be squeezed out.

Being responsible for a spotlight ever 2 months or so, 1/4 say? Is very appealing to me... I'll keep my ear to the ground. Also happy to see a positive vibe surrounding the idea of introducing some form of video... I myself don't have the capability but think it could only serve to enrich the depth of the experience. Well, this train seems ready to leave the station. I have every reason to believe this feature will be far greater than before-- Congratulations on getting it rolling again.

I think messy is the best way to describe my fears as well. Seeing as each month we will get 2 creators spotlighted, and 50-odd that could have been but weren't, then we already run the risk of people being negative about the spotlight because of what it isn't, rather than what it is. If you have an "official" means of recommendation, people will expect their recommendations to be carried out and people will start getting annoyed that their recommendations are being ignored, assume it's personal, etc. etc. At the end of the day, the choice of interviewee will always be a judgment call by the interviewer(s), so why pretend it is anything else?

I'm not really sure how the format for the suggested questions should be, as it kind of implies that you are recommending a creator if you recommend a question for a specific creator. I'm certainly not against the idea, but there's that implication in there that could lead to the messiness of an explicit creator nomination. What might work is that we have a thread where people suggest generic questions that could be asked of any creators so these can be pulled into the interview regardless of who gets picked next.

Anyway, how come Teebonesey says and plays with him being unable to read all the time, while he answers perfectly (more than perfect, his answers are ingenious most of the time), every time? I think either:

a) He (or you, if you read this, teebonesey) can actually read (busted),

b) he has got some application that reads text for him, on his PC
or
c) He is controlled by an evil, super intelligent monkey that has escaped from a mad scientist's lab, and is now planning for world domination, using a baloon, some floss and nuke...

I would go for a), but I find c) more likely.

I think the more interesting conundrum is the fact that I can, in fact, write with no problem, yet I'm completely unable to read. Strange how that works...

Your evil mad-science monkey concept actually would explain a lot about me, except you must have a few things wrong: super-INTELLIGENT monkey? No super intelligent monkey would use ME to take over the world. Super-unhinged monkey perhaps, with the goal being, more likely, to hoard all the world's mayonnaise into a giant pile, or to fly a giant crabcake to the moon, or some other such indication of serious mental instability.

NOW we're banging on all cylinders.
