This level would have been great; if it wern't for the camera work!
That has to be the worst camera work I've ever seen in a level. I can't see where I'm going and throughout every part of the level it just jumps about like crazy! It ruined a perfectly fine level...

I thought this was really nice - good visuals, nice gameplay - UNTIL the end section once it gets to nighttime. From then on it was buggy and a bit frustrating. I fell out the of level 3 times, the springy things didnt spring well - especially the one at an angle. the jump onto the sillhuetted section was badly designed too - you cant see the jump and you die.

Great level - but you have got to seriously sort out the end. I agree with quinns observation about the camera work too.

Hey, I played this yesterday so I'm usure whether the new changes you've made were in effect by then or not.

Overall, I quite liked it, visually it it relatively simple but mostly effective and clean and the characters were kinda cute. The gameplay was relatively stock but quite fun, so no real issues there.

can I have some more feedback. It is really helpful.

Well, you did ask....

The camera work is the biggest issue here. To clarify, everything is zoomed in so far that you feel confined and as a player you struggle to know where to go / what your options are. Simply zooming out the camera in most places / actually dropping it completely, would do wonders for this level. The following is just general advice for cameras, not specifically things you've done wrong, and it's all just my opinion - I'm very picky when it comes to camera work

Remember there are two main purposes for camera zones: cinematic effect and aiding gameplay. This level does not really have need for the former so every time you use a camera, ask your self the question: how does this help the player.

Key points to avoid (AKA my list of pet hates with camera useage) are:

Not being able to see the whole room, or at least a significant portion of it.
The player gets close to the edge of the screen so that jumps become "leaps of faith", or at least you can't do them at a full run, because you are blind.
Objective is too close to the edge of the screen. If you have somewhere to go and the camera forces it to the corner of the screen, it takes longer to notice.
Camera is too angled - this is a great thing for cinematics, awful for gameplay, judging x position across all three planes becomes around 10x harder at an obtuse angle, so jumps involving layer shifting are a nightmare.

The other major issue I found was that in a few places, you could accidentally layer shift into the back layer and fall down on to the level floor behind the level. The quick fix for this is to gas the holes, but then you end up in the situation that these hazards become slightly cheap. Best bet it to put in a bit more effort and redesign the sections slightly or in some cases you may be able to simply block off layer shifting with some invisible thin layer blockers.

Final nitpick: The section where there is the cliff with the little sign and you die if you fall off. It really wasn't obvious where to go here. There also seems to be a platform directly below the sign (but slightly out of camera), so the death from gas makes no sense. There really needs to be more indication that there is a different way down and potentially, I'd consider swapping the gas death for something else.

So that's a massive wall of text for you and by no means do I want you to take this as purely negative. I did like the level and it has plenty of potential, but the issues do really drag it down. I gave it 4 stars, but if I come back and find you've fixed up the camera and other issues it's definitely getting 5

Im sorry if you think this is boosting, but I have made some big changes to my level. I have deleted and published it again.
Please give feedback. Hopefully the camera angles are good this time.
If you find any spots that are dodgy please tell me.

I think I have made this level just right now. After lot of helpful feedback, I have revamped this level so that the camera angles are screen perfect. Before they were very dodgy and was very hard to play the level. It has so far recieved a four star rating after I made changes, so please if you played the level when I first published please try again. Hopefully it feels like a much better level. Please keep the feedback coming, this is my first adventure level and it is very helpful
Thanks Litled

Hey Litled, I played your level today. Ive been reading through your thread and I see people have had trouble with the camera. I never played if before, so I don't know how it was, but now I'd say you have your camera sorted out pretty well. I really liked your architecture for everything. I think this is a good looking level with well rounded gameplay. The only thing I didn't really like was that I kept knocking your characters over. It's not a big deal at all, but I thought they should be glued down. Nice work!! 2010-04-03 23:18:00

Thanks Smasher... When I first published this level, the camera work was absolutely shocking. It was all jumpy and you couldnt see what was next a lot of the time. It shows you how much a level can change from the cameras. About the characters, i did glue them down at first but there body bit fly off at lot. And it is always good to knock them over. LOL. Thanks for the feedback anyway 2010-04-04 09:06:00

My returned F4F:

+ Nice design. Always a plus for me.
+ Fun story and characters

- I couldn't for the life of me figure out what to do where all the bubbles are behind glass and you can grab the white panel in the roof next to them and a hole in the floor opens up that the sponge on a piston goes through. I couldn't grab the sponge before the door shut again. I landed on top of it once and got thrown high up and saw dark matter and logic. Another time I grabbed it and let go and fell behind the scenery to the level floor.
- Some spelling and grammar issues. Sorry I didn't write them all down but one that always annoys me is when people say " should of " instead of " should have ". GRRR !!
- The last section before the checkpoint is quite annoying because of (1) The lift. The handle is too big and gets in the way and annoyingly when you let go it goes down again. (2) The sponge flipper just after that wouldn't work properly. I tried jumping on it and grabbing it and it worked about twice in 10 attempts so I'm still not sure how exactly it's supposed to work.

Overall a good fun level that just needs a few fixes and tweaks. It's definitely one I would play again. Infact I did lol.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I got stuck under the King's throne when trying to jump up the steps and had to pop. Silly me I know but it may be worth filling that in or blocking it somehow.

Oh yeh I should point this out in the level. Its a x2 part. But thanks for saying you can see the Dark Matter and Logic. I will be sure to fix that.

(1) Oh really that is annoying. I will change that. THe only reason I havent is because no one has told me about that happening to them. SO THANKS.
(2)For that flipper sponge. You are only suppose to tap it. If you did then I dono what is wrong with that. It usually works. Ill be sure to look at that.

THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACK
Very Handy

Hello litled,

Just got done playing your level several hours ago, so I decided to attempt to post my thoughts using the PS3 browser. That was a mistake, because my controller tipped over and hit the "back" button. So now that I'm on an actual computer with a real browser, here goes:

One of the things that struck me right away was the use of various woods and the simple (but fitting, giving it a tribal look) patterns cut into it. It immediately set the tone for the theme and "feel" of the level. Also, the lighting was good where it was used.

Where some of it broke down for me was in some of the rooms (before the King) there was a lot of unintended layer shifting going on, even though it was minimal and only in a few spots. There was also one room with two characters on a balcony of sorts with a railing. I managed to jump up there on accident, and found it incredibly difficult to get down. The railing was taller than my sackboy, so merely jumping off didn't work. I had to run and jump onto one of the characters, then jump again just to break out of the layer I was in.

Speaking of which, I truly enjoyed the textures and design of the characters, and the dialog was witty and humorous at times. There were a few typos and grammatical errors, but I couldn't tell if they were there on purpose or not. The one glaring one that is sticking out at the moment is the use of "a" instead of "an" in front of a word that started with a vowel. You may also want to consider gluing them all down, as fallen characters also led to more layer shifting mayhem in spots.

I also managed to get on top of the "mountain" area by climbing up the far side of the cliff near the sign. My immediate thought was that you should put some extra point or prize bubbles up there. Once down below, I entered the 'lockdown' room. Unfortunately, it appeared that whatever was supposed to happen with the lever on the platform didn't happen. I was a bit confused until I came back here and read your post. Still: grabbing, tapping, swinging and cursing at the screen all had no effect. I was unable to see the rest of your level due to this oversight.

I have already been criticized on the forums for not being very generous with my ratings, but they follow right along with MM's criteria and descriptions. Because I was unable to finish the level at all, I could only muster to give you two stars (i.e. "Needs work"). Fear not, however, as I noticed you had already had over 100 plays since you republished, and I'm sure there are many more to come. I simply couldn't give any more stars without seeing the rest of the level/being able to finish.

Additionally, I have also tried to point out some of the things I did like about the level, and I hope you take them to heart. I am looking forward to playing the level again and future levels in the series. (It is a series, right?) Cheers and keep up the good work!

Yes I just found what was wrong. I made it bigger after Vista's feedback. But the switch range increased for some odd reason. So you couldnt get it to go up. I fixed that now, so if you dont mind playing again. Only if you want to. THANKS LITLED

Hello :hero:

I've just played it (again). Great job, you made a very nice level. Great tribal atmosphere, with stunning sceneries ! I loved the bridge. Not the last one (that was good too), but the one just before the part with the yellow sponges ^^ Flying green stars at the beginning bring something special too Just one thing, maybe you could improve the watefall at the beginning. Longer and faster ^^

I rated it 4 stars, and I fav'd it ^^

THANK YOU ODD. I really want to make the waterfall faster. But when I do and you play with a partner, sometimes it hits the ground and makes annoying noise. If there is any one that could help, would be much appreciated.
THANKS again Odd

Hey, so I've played it today.
I haven't got a great feedback, but I hope it helps. And, most of the players said already everything I wanted to say.

There was one part (the part of your picture with the R1 on it) where you could fall in these holes on the level ground. I fell very often into these holes and it was so annoying.
Then (again this part with the R1-sign) there is a bad camera angle, so I jumped over and over and didn't see where I have to go!

An earlier part where you had to jump up and had to grab a brown switch to open a door behind...I didn't see for a moment that there was a door or a hole to go through. And I think the switch didn't make a sound, so I thought there was something wrong. So maybe a little bit more light would be good. (if there is a sound I'm sorry)
I'll play it again if you correct these parts. Maybe I'll find some more bugs and other stuff!

So the good stuff, I liked the start, where you had to wake up the king. It was kinda funny.
And the mixed materials were awesome! The gameplay wasn't bad, but there weren't many new ideas.

To sum up, a good level with some bugs. 4/5 Stars.

Thxs Red, I try and fix all those problems you had. I have been waiting for some one to pull me up on that door part. There is no real direction where to go afterwards. Thank you again. I just love getting feedback. GOOD OR BAD.2010-04-09 03:07:00

Played this earlier, one of my favorite parts of this level were the visuals, they had a nice look to them. The gameplay was nice, and it flowed nicely. I look forward to the next installment.

Hey, I played your level and i thought it was really nice. The visuals were lovely and I really liked the characters. There's an arrow you have to pull out to progress, first time I jumped towards it I got squished. I guess the easiest solution would be to make it possible to crouch under. The other door you have to bounce up and pull a switch to open, I thought that could be more obvious. I retried once becuase I thought it was broke! Then I spotted the way it had opened. After the photo booth there's a wooden structure over fire, if your on the back layer you run straight into the fire. Making the path curve upward or adding an invisible boundary/rock should make the player auto layer jump to the front layer and hopefully avoid that death. Some other areas were like that too, the bridge near the end I ran past and fell into gas, add a rock there too or something similar. Good level otherwise, look forward to seeing the continuation!2010-04-13 17:08:00
