New Level: Need a Bit Of Help Please...

Alright, I want to make a, period. I never can get one finished, and I need a few ideas to get tossed at me... please.
I want it to be a long, fun platformer that will appeal the most to the people here at LBPC. I want it to be like Subterranean Setbacks. Yes, I know I'd never reach its epicness, but I'd love to put up a fight.

The thing I need the most help with is the storyline and setting/design. I can't figure that stuff out to save my life. I can come up with most of the gameplay and platforming stuff, yet I'd still enjoy some help with that. :]

So, do you guys mind throwing out some ideas for me? If I ever finish it, I garuantee everyone here who has helped will be mentioned here on the forums and also, as another little incentive, you'll get in the beta testing! Haha! It's not much, but kinda the best I can do.

You could do one on an abandoned planet, that turns out to not actually be abandoned. See, there's a lot of space levels, but only a few take place on an actual alien planet.2010-03-18 22:55:00

What about storming a castle, an exotic island, amazon jungle with the river, cave levels are pretty decent also. City sky climb possibly with jumping on the tops of buildings and such2010-03-19 00:18:00

Very helpful guys! Thanks a LOT! I really needed these good suggestions. I would do a cave level, but I'd feel like I'd be ripping off Suterranean Setbacks, considering I mentioned it as my model level. Haha! I like the idea of an exotic island and an abandoned planet. I think I've got something in mind now. . .

EDIT: HAHA! I used that generator and it gave me "An elegant shovel that went to a rugby match." Not sure how I'd make a level about that! Lol!

An exotic island that appears to be abandoned but then turns out is inhabited...they should make a TV show about that...if you need any help along the way, ideas and what not, I'm new but I'd be glad to help out a fellow creator.2010-03-19 12:32:00

Hmmmmm, methinks you might need to listen to yourself a bit more. A cave is just a cave... you realise how many people have made caves in LBP? I don't think you would be accused of ripping anyone off. However, if you are to do a cave, then your challenge is making it stand out from all the other cave levels out there. But that's not too difficult. Just play a few, most of them are very, very similar. Just list the things that they all do and make sure you don't do any of them

Me neither, but I think someone should. There definitely aren't enough levels about elegent shovels out there ^^


As for the Troubles with story / environments, if you have the gameplay elements designed then let them lead you. Consider what you have and whether they would fit any particular broad theme (industrial / natural / futuristic / historic etc. - really broad themes) and start to refine down from there. Once you have a bit of direction start playing around with material combos / researching aesthetics in other levels (take photos!). RAndomly playing around with styles will lead you to an style(s) that works for you. This will again help direct your theme further at which point you can tie things together with a basic narrative. Basic being the operative word. Essentially you just want a goal / objective and something to give purpose to the level, to compel the player.

Once you have themes a basic goal shouldn't be too hard to come up with.

Since you said pandora i thought what if you make a level about opening pandora's box then you get sucked in and have to battle with creatures and then battle it out with pandora herself something like that idk.

Don't worry about how it might be insuperior to other levels. It won't. I played your santa level and it is full of fun gameplay and variety. Just don't think about it too much and it'll start to flow from there2010-03-20 13:56:00

Sorry I haven't posted here for a day or two, but thank you very much for all of the advice and ideas! I think I need to stop thinking about how others will think of my levels because then I end up stopping and deleting it. I've deleted nearly 75 half finished levels from my moon, and during the process I've become a far better creator. I have to admit, my Santa level almost didin't get published either. I thought it was terrible, so I don't really know. I've always been hard on myself in about everything I do. I guess LBP is included in that category. Haha! Anyway I can't thank all of you enough. I'm going to start experimenting in a little bit today and hopefully have some kind of half-finished beta soon that all of you guys who have helped can participate in!

Hopefully HS baseball doesnt' take up too much time! Lol!

Big thanks to you rtm, your words were esppecially helpful. I may start a cave level, I may not. You will all have to wait and see!

I think so... I'm going to have to keep experimenting though. Haha!

EDIT: Definitly found a design. Looks pretty good if I say so myself. Not a cave, not a city, it's mostly unique I think. I'll have another Ideas and Projects thread up in a bit with a pic or two!
