Is it possible to modify the light in searchlight switches?

Archive: 17 posts

Well, the title says it all. I have noticed that I can't modify the colour, neither the intensity of the lamp of the searchlight lamp of the MGS pack. The only options I get when I press square button are regarding the position detection switch, not the lamp. Am I doing something wrong? How would I use only the switch, without the light?

Thanks.

The searchlight switch is such a great tool for detecting sackboy on a single layer that you'd think Mm would have made more modifiers for it... the only way I have been able to take mod the thing is by making the searchlight reaalllly tiny so the light is as small as possible while making the search radius whatever I need it to be. Also, if you wanted a more custom light to go with the searchlight... just attach a regular spotlight in front of it and tailor the search radius to match the spotlights glow. Doing so will mask any residual light given off by the searchlight and usually only show your spotlight instead. Hope that was a helpful little tip.2010-03-17 18:59:00

A related question: How do Mm get their spotlights to turn off in the stealth section at the start of The Mission? Is it something to do with the global fog settings?2010-03-17 22:05:00

Another option is to point the spotlight away from the subject. I have used them in several places where I have them out of camera view, directly overhead with the spotlight pointing up. Then just adjust the effective radius to include the area in question. This will give you the plane they are on. Combine this (using an AND gate) with a player prox switch to get an exact hit on it. It would be awesome if Mm fixed this tool or gave us another tool - a player plane detection switch.2010-03-17 22:16:00

If you take a look at Adi and Lous' latest tutorial on how they did some of the things in their theives of ankh morpork level, they have a solution for this. It's very similar to what cdub suggested.2010-03-17 22:46:00

Thank you, I'll try your suggestions. And yes, it would be great if Mm fix this.2010-03-17 23:05:00

I tried this before, but it completely fails with multiple sackpeople, at least when you don't want it to Require All.

Presumably they cheat. On a similar subject, I'm sure I've seen community levels where they managed to switch on and off the laser which comes out of the Laser Sight object, but I can't figure out how to do that either.

Edit: Weird. The Super Senty Turrent object actually has Laser Sights with attached wires, but you seemingly can't reattach wires to these objects once you've removed them.

Aya, if you want a tweakable laser, you have to extract it from the super sentry and bring the mag switch with it. As soon as you disconnect the switch, it becomes untweable like you said. The way we turn them on/off is to use a relay that goes through the mag switch that's already connected to it.

I tried showing somebody how to rip a tweakable laser out of a sst recently, but the game wouldn't let me detach the switch from the backplate. Seems a patch messed that up. If you want one, I can give you one I tore out before the patch broke it: the mag can be taken off and placed into a logic network. It's how I got the laser sights to turn on/off on my mechs.

Also, as an amendment to v0rtex's suggestion, you can shrink the searchlight down really small and the light it gives off will be minimal. Additionally, you can gas the light and embed it another material, thereby masking its existence even more.

Despite Aya's 'complete failures', it can work quite nicely when run through an AND gate. I use this technique quite often, actually. Sure, it's more finicky when you don't want a require-all scenario, but I've yet to encounter a situation where I haven't been able to work out a solution.

Yeah. I just found a video on YouTube, but it doesn't work any more. I don't really want one - was just curious how it was done, in case a similar technique would work with the searchlight - which it clearly won't.

Connect a switch to it i think... Just like you would with a normal light

Connect a switch to it i think... Just like you would with a normal lightI don't htink this will work because the searchlight by it's nature IS a switch. But as I've never actually tried, I can't say for sure. I've always wished we could wire a switch to a switch. That would make logic SO much easier.2010-03-19 07:41:00

The first MM spotlight is major cheatage

It follows perfectly, and I mean perfectly. It also shuts off when you go out of range and prioritizes following player #1. The whole introduction is full of invisible switches, invisible connectors, unremovable stickers, and semi-transparent playstation eyeish stickers.
