Hayao Miyazaki is a genius.

He has made epic movies such as Spirited Away and Howls Moving Castle.

FACT: The producer (Forgot who) watched Howls Moving Castle and dreamt up some of LBP that night :hero:

Don't forget about totoro and Porco rosso! I agree he's a genius, but unfortunately he might have retired, making ponyo the last film he will direct , but he will still do screenplays and stories 2010-03-17 18:50:00

Castle in the Sky is fantastic. Nausica was great too. Ponyo... uh... it was pretty to look at. But I felt like a 5 year old watching that. I just wish Disney would do a better job at promoting studio Ghibli... too much talent to not get the recognition Miyazaki deserves. Someone made a Totoro level in the early LBP days... cat bus and all. I'm sure there have been many more since then. Maybe I will go take a look.2010-03-18 07:40:00

I'm a big fan of Myazaki. I think he's one of the best filmmaker-storytellers working today. Very sad to hear that he may stop directing. I thought Ponyo had some incredible sequences.

Without a doubt one of the great visionary filmmakers. You can never be sure where his movies are going to go. He has a way of frightening and then surprising you. The mood of the final sequences of Spirited Away - the train through the sea - is one of my all-time favorite closes to a movie. This is a movie with so much at stake, so much fear and anxiety, so much of the stuff of nightmares - and then it ends not with a ground-pounding showdown, but as a serene, tranquil, incredibly strange dream. I don't doubt for a second that Myazaki is a true genius, and I think that word is bandied about a great deal, so much that it tends to lose its meaning.

But to be absolutely clear, I don't think there are many geniuses in the world. I do think Myazaki is genuinely one of them.
