I'm guessing it was because it didn't really add to the conversation in some way. It does seem really harsh to neg rep for that particular post though. If you believe that your being unfairly targeted you can contact one of the mods who can check it out for you. Just don't abuse their good nature for every time it happens - you know what I mean.

Good rule of thumb though is keep your posts helpful or informative. Yea, we all post short or OT posts once and a while but generally it's not a good idea.

I see nothing wrong with your post - at least nothing worth neg repping you for. It may have been better if you had also commented on the topic at hand, the creation of a level based on that video. But neg repping you for THAT post is way over the top, IMHO.2010-03-16 18:18:00

But neg repping you for THAT post is way over the top, IMHO.

I think though, that the neg rep feature has come into much more frequent use recently. When I signed up here pretty much every one considered that negative repping someone was not really the "done thing" and I think a lot of people would only ever neg rep in pretty extreme circumstances. I know I've only used it once and that was when someone was full on flaming a new member of the site.

But it seems recently that "being a minor irritation" is neg-reppable in some people's eyes, which essentially means you can get neg repped for rubbing someone the wrong way, being offtopic (which this site has always been lenient on - thrupnies, anyone?), or other trivialities. I'm also guessing some people use neg rep as a form of secret trolling, or simply because it gives them the power to punish others - I'd pretty much assume this was the case if someone leaves no informative message behind - and maybe this is just in line with the apparent negativity that has occured elsewhere in the site recently.

Seeing as this has been happening a fair amount recently, maybe it's time to review whether the ability to neg rep is actually worthwhile?

Also remember that the mods aren't actually monitoring your rep directly. If you feel you have been the victim of rep abuse then report it, to a moderator, via PM. Otherwise they won't be aware that anything is going awry.

Or reconsider the value of having a reputation system.2010-03-16 18:34:00

Or reconsider the value of having a reputation system.

I don't really think it adds much value, and since it's so easily abused, I'd be happy if it was just switched off.

I think the positive aspect of it, the simple thanks button, is a nice thing TBH. I forget to use it most of the time, but it's a simple way to show appreciation for things people do without making a meaningless post for the sake of saying thanks. Whether or not it needs to be added up is a different matter and personally I don't really care who has how much rep or whatever. But then you take away the notion of value if you don't keep track of it so people may stop using it. Either way, I don't see any detrimental effect of having a positive rep only system. Some may find it worthless, others may find it a nice touch, but no one can use it to beat someone else down....

Plus, morganna always writes me really nice notes in my rep

Yes, WES, I got your message. I was in class all day, and have thus not resolved it yet. You didn't need to go make a thread about it... Those in question have been PMed and warned. I'm looking into a way to resolve the negative rep, but no promises.

As for the rep system, it has a role, and one which can be helpful. It's a quick-at-glance way of knowing which members are the most helpful, or who might be more inclined to answer a site-related question. Yes, you will inevitably gain more rep just by being here for a long time, but that doesn't mean you should be any less capable of helping someone out. It shouldn't be something actively sought after (kind of like hearts, if you will); rather, they should come to you for your actions.

If you feel that you have lower rep than you should, take a step back and ask if you are actually contributing to the site in a positive light. If people are negative repping you, it's because you are doing something to rub them the wrong way. Again, take a step back and think on it. It can be for a variety of reasons, and not just for the post that was negatively repped in particular (even though that's how it should be).
