The corrupt *level* thread (Copy your creations and don't lose your work!)

Archive: 20 posts

The purpose of this thread is to raise awareness of an alarmingly common problem in LBP PSP: a corrupt level file. To find out what it is and how to prepare for one, read on.

The bad news:
Corrupt level files happen much more often than you'd think. If you're creating, you are VERY much at risk. It's shockingly easy to lose days or even weeks of work with no hope of recovering it.

The good news:
It is quite simple to guard against a corrupt level file, and it takes very little time to do so. With the proper safeguards in place, you will never lose more than 30 minutes of your work at the very worst. In fact, you may never lose any work at all!

What exactly is a corrupt level file?
A corrupt level file is simply a level on My Moon that crashes your PSP whenever you try to play or edit it. It is not currently known what causes a corrupt level file, and there is no apparent pattern or trigger. A level may become corrupt anytime during editing and/or saving, and you will not know that your level is corrupt until you try to access it again after saving and exiting.

How do I guard against a corrupt level file?
There are many ways, but I will outline one of the simplest and easiest methods:
Every 30 minutes or so of create time, save and exit your level. If you have trouble remembering to do this, set a kitchen timer or cell phone alarm to remind you.
Select your level by hovering over the level icon and pressing 'X', then scroll one page to the right by pressing 'R'.
Select "Copy" from the menu.
The game will ask you for a location - this is where a copy of your level file will be placed. Select a convenient empty crater and press 'X'.
Select the copy of your level by pressing 'X' and scroll three pages to the right by pressing 'R' three times.
Select 'Edit Name' from the menu and add "1" to the end of your level's name. This will help you identify it as a copy and not get it confused with the original.
The next time you need to make a copy (i.e., 30 minutes later), follow this same process but add a '2' to the level name so that you know which file copy is the newest.
You can keep as many copies of your level as you like, but three should be plenty. When it comes time to create copy #4, just overwrite copy #1. Copy #5 will overwrite copy #2, and so on.

Oh no, my level is corrupt! What do I do?
If you've been making copies of your level as you create, simply use your most recent copy and continue your work from there. The amount of work you will lose is determined by how often you make copies of your level while you create. Don't want to lose much work? Make copies more often.

What if I haven't been making copies of my level?
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you are out of luck. Your work is gone, and you might as well start creating your level from the beginning.

That's it! Preventing the loss of your hard work in create mode is really just that simple. The method outlined here, along with regular full data backups, will help make sure that you have many heartbreak-free hours of LBP PSP in your future. Well, what are you waiting for? Go make a copy of your level now!

Well, I learned my lesson after my first corrupted level.
Anyways, I'm back where I was at now.
I recreated my level again, and now I keep many copies of ever since this happened.

I'm back where I started with my new level (with slight changes than original)
well, actually I've worked a tiny bit more.

Thanks for posting this up Taffey, or the other creators may end up like me

Well I'm glad to hear you have more or less recovered from your ordeal. Hearing that your level became corrupted bummed me out and was a big factor in me posting this. Hopefully nobody else will share the experiences that you and CyberSora have had this week.2010-03-16 22:32:00

Hey Taffey,

Thanks for putting this together! In addition to backing up a profile to a PC, these two EASY procedures will help anyone overcome any problems with the currently buggy create mode.

When I create, I'm constantly paranoid so I always backup my data to a PC before starting a long session in create mode. Then, I've been trained with the even buggier previous versions of this game to always exit create mode and re-enter it to playtest rather than switching to "change to play mode" on the start menu.

Within this time gap of exiting a level and re-entering to playtest, I always make a copy of my level. I like to pick those craters with a ring of circles, so I just copy a level on one circle and follow the ring around so that I don't even have to re-title my level. I just keep copying in a clockwise fashion, and if the circle in front of it is occupied with an older version, I delete it so that I will know where to put my next copy.

The good thing about this too is that no matter how many clones you make, it never takes a toll on disk space, or perhaps has negligible effects. Yay! So if you're paranoid like me, you can even fill your entire moon with copies!

Making more clones,

Shameless bump!

One thing I didn't mention in my original post is that levels should copied into a backup location before playtesting. Using the "switch to play mode" option from the create mode start menu seems to cause level corruption fairly often, so exit to My Moon first and make a backup while you're there.

Just Friday I had my newest level corrupt, but fortunately I have been keeping backups every hour or so, so I only lost about 90 minutes of work. If I had lost everything then it would have been devastating.

I am saying all of this as a warning that this issue does really occur, and it is not rare by any means (it happened to me on A Dingo Down Under as well). PLEASE make sure to backup your levels as well as your profile!

I've finally started rolling on Episode VI, so I'm doing the level backup thing like crazy. Of course I'm also backing up my entire profile every day or two, especially because there appears to be some sort of crash bug associated with the Turbo pack that has yet to be identified. I fully expect my level and/or profile to die at some point, and I'm making darned sure I don't lose more than 30 minutes of work at the worst.2010-05-31 19:35:00

Oh no! Do you have any backups at all or do you need to start from scratch? 2010-06-01 00:37:00

Great tip, I've actually been doing that exact same thing when I was working on Oneiros Ch. 2 after it became corrupted (the first time). Definitely saved me many hours over many corruptions (I think it happend 4 or 5 times with that one)! Thanks for posting this, it should help people a lot.

I will say that it seems to happen more when I'm using unpause->undo to test certain pieces of a level. May be safer to switch to play mode and back when possible.
Then again, if you're copying your level every 30 minutes you should be fine either way

I hope episode VI won't take too long, it's been ages since your last level! Fingers crossed a crash doesn't happen and destroy everything or I'll have to kill myself!

No more Taffey levels=The end of LBP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We can't live without you Taffey!

By the way, do you like my new avatar and sig? Cause I drew them yesterday for lack of amusement and I think they're pretty snazzy!

I hope episode VI won't take too long, it's been ages since your last level!I also hope it doesn't take too long, but knowing myself it probably will.

I finally, FINALLY, have an Emperor character I'm happy with, both visually and personality wise. I bounced around different concepts for him for months and got stuck at least half a dozen times until I randomly came across my current design. (Months? Yes, I wanted to have him in Episode V.) Darth Later will be in this one again of course, and the ugliest princess in the universe will be making another appearance as well.

Fingers crossed a crash doesn't happen and destroy everythingAh, but it already has! The crash I mean. Nothing was destroyed though because... why?... because I'm backing up my levels of course! I'm making profile backups at least a couple times a week as well.

I'll have to kill myself! No! Not the "try again" option!! It's not worth it man! BACK AWAY SLOWLY FROM YOUR POPIT!!

By the way, do you like my new avatar and sig? Cause I drew them yesterday for lack of amusement and I think they're pretty snazzy!Actually yes, I think they're great! I have no capacity for drawing, so I can honestly say I'm impressed.

This has happened to me so often. I now always keep loads of copies of my level, and to avoid RSOD I make complex objects in a separate level, capture them and move them to my original level. This is great to bypass create lag. 2010-11-02 13:01:00

RSOD?

It would be nice if someone could compile a list (here) of reasons it goes corrupt. I've learned:
A) Backup your profile and levels.
B) BACKUP YOUR LEVELS
C) BACK UP YOUR LEVELS!!!!!!
D) Turn off the redo/ undo feature
E) Don't ever push the switch to play mode button of evil!

Yup, you get it when there are too many corners at one time on the screen. Not fun.

Backing up levels is really important. I can get to really into creating and forget to save, then a freeze will strike and bring a abrupt end to a level.
