Greetings

:kz::kz::kz::kz::kz::kz:

Luos and I have been throwing some ideas around for future creations and we have been seriously considering an adventure set inside the 'fallout' universe.

The way I've been debating it is putting together 2-4 levels of content where completing missions in one level will unlock the next level and even completing individual areas will open areas in other levels. (probably sticker keys).

As the 'fallout' games are very open ended the idea would be that the players can explore throughout these 2-4 levels finding items, completing missions, possibly even levelling up.

IF we were to undertake this we're basically talking about a couple of hours gameplay for the end player. (with the option to save your progress using stickerkeys collected)

Hopefully you've played meddling magpie or thieves of ankh morpork so you know the kind of slower puzzle based gameplay we often create. (combined with short periods of platforming peril!) We're talking about huge levels of exploring, taking on supermutants, lockpicking, solving puzzles, weapons, great 3D scenery, and an epic story. We may try and recreate the whole good/bad 'choices' idea, but it may prove simpler to just provide the player with a levelling/optional missions route.

Now I know that 'adi and luos' are relatively new to the world lbp, but I think we have built up a little following through our joint levels, tutorials, my presence on the spotlight team, and luos' sack series. Therefore IF we were to build these I can confidently say they will be good ...but... would anyone want to play it?

It would be a big time investment from the player, LBP is NOT a first person shooter so the playerbase is not the same. It wouldn't be the kind of thing that would succeed on cool levels... so essentially the audience is you. Do you think it would be something you would take the time to playthrough and enjoy?

Please be honest as we wouldnt want to make this if you think it would be an epic failure.

:kz::kz::kz::kz::kz::kz:

(btw our next released level will be entitled 'the owl and the pussycat... and the mafia pandas'. - look out for in the showcase over the coming weeks)

I like it sounds great guys! can't wait to see what you come up with. I would offer to help but i know nothing about the Fallout Universe even though it one of my fave games, due to the facts its an 18 i'm not allowed to play it, EVIL parents. I've seen bits of the new level there working on and it looks awesome, but what about the mafia bunny i made you. You can't just use damz's one lol.2010-03-16 11:02:00

Well my level Myst was quite a success... its gameplay time is about an hour long and in a very similar save style structure to the one you're consider making.

These lengthy puzzle levels are something which lbp has a very limited supply of and IMO id recommend you go all out on the project, im sure there will be plenty of people willing to play it... although of course there will always be many who will not enjoy it.

I would definitely play these levels if you two made them! I'm familiar enough with Fallout 3 (even though I don't own it) that I would appreciate the levels. I've asked before in another thread and I'll ask again: where do you two find the time to pump out all of these levels?!? Keep 'em coming! 2010-03-16 14:17:00

So are you thinking of having a hub in each level with various exits that unlock as you progress? The only thing that would put me off playing would be having to replay sections again and again to get to the new bits....but then how do you get a scoring system that can accurately track that?? Colour me intrigued.... ; )2010-03-16 14:44:00

hmmmm..... It's ambitious to say the least. If you guys are excited to make it then you should make it. There are plenty of examples of longer levels that players will invest the time in. You may not find broad appeal with the typical LBP crowd but there is a big enough player base that I think it would be well received. I've not played Fallout 3 but would be interested to see your take on it - so yea, I'd play it. 2010-03-16 15:30:00

I've not played Fallout 3. I'm not even familiar with it, seeing as though I only play LBP : ) The concepts you describe sound enticing to me though. I love the other levels you guys have published. I keep coming back to Magpie again and again for it's replay value. I would play something like this for the same reason. Here is why I like high quality multi-path levels: Whenever I have friends in my pod, I feel obligated to play some cool new levels I've found. I like ones that are multi-path so that I don't have to endure the same content over again. I also like to show them ones that are NOT found on the cool pages because chances are that they've seen them and I'm not providing either of us with a new experience.

I feel I would be a fan of this series. I'm already a big fan of luos_desruc / The Adipose levels.

I can prolly whip up a decent DC-like city background in a day or so,
But in this case its way more important that we have the gameplay/story all set up before we even start creating the level.
As these levels are not linear we need to find a good balance between strolling/roaming/gameplay and story, let alone to balance these between multiple levels.. also considering I want to use a lot of indoor enviroments as well.

My most important desire is to give it a real fallout-ish feel and look..
Ive probably spend around 1500 hours in fallout.. so for me its important to get the feel right.

where do you two find the time to pump out all of these levels?!? Keep 'em coming!
I got no life (honestly!)
And Adi is a teacher.. so even if he told the kids a load of bull.. they will probably believe him.
And therefore he has loads of free time!
(tbh, I have no clue on how Adi has so much time.. especially considering he also has a wife to take care of!)

A scoring system would be quite hard to do,
In this case we might need a whole sticker setup, devided in main story and side stuff...
As well as there probably be only one scoreboard for all 4 levels.. (Not sure though).
Though, placing a "proceed" sticker can either make you "warp" to the right location... but is it backtracking if i.e. different enemie's appear, as well as the hour of the day would be different, as well as the possibility to open new doors in prev. visited area's. (global daylight & light logic).

Maybe it would be better to use something like the "Key-lockbox" system, where the player has to put in a code to get the key.
in this case.. the oldskool nintendo "write down your password" feel would come back

Well I'm very excited! I think the multiple areas that would change would be a great idea. You could just name the levels after the different areas so if you got the sticker to go into the megaton pub, the player would know that they would need to exit the level (or finish it) then go to the megaton area.

One idea might be to have many scoreboards around as easy ways for the player to leave their current level and go to another one after picking up a key/sticker.

All I know is that you guys make great levels! I would love to do what I could to help. I never played fallout but I watched a good chunk of it being played by my roommate.

Three things come to mind when I think about Fallout:
1. Molerats EVERYWHERE (and that Molerat repellent stick)
2. V.A.T.S. (I would want to see what you guys would do for it [even if it is only in one part])
3. And.. I seem to have forgotten the last one...... Hopefully it will come back to me later!

Also, I have a question... do you think your level will need a Shopkeeper to sell carrots and giant, mutated fish?

I dont think we will be using vats, that would probably result in maxing the logic thermo 2010-03-16 22:36:00

Sounds really good and I'm sure I'd enjoy it. As for the warping to different parts of the level, you could check out this littlt thing that I made a while back.
https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=18334-Tech-Showcase-1P-Choice2P-Gate

Yes it is a little odd and not quite made for your exact purpose, but it is very useful and I'm sure you two could figure out a nice way to modify it. It's essentially a warp menu. Now, since that cheese update was released, you don't have to emit checkpoints, you can just activate them. Also, you could close off he seperate gates with dissolve that only dissolves when activated by a sticker found withen the level. Just take a look at it if you're interested. It may prove helpful.

No we won't be warping around. I've got the travelling all planned out - you'l just have to wait and see P

thanks for the feedback - it looks like this project is a 'go'. Is anyone of the opinion that this is too 'long' and would be put off by it?

For the V.A.T.S. you could always use a tracker type thing with a aimer on it and have it controled by a player using a jetpack. As for maxing out the Thermo with it, you could make it the last level and really just devote it for a good boss type senareo (suck at spelling)

I see this having real potential only problem i see is with the story. Yes there is a story but most time in Fallout is spent amisley running through the towns to buy and sell things, so it will be difficult for a story. I really dont mean to say dont do it, im sure whatever you do will be perfect.

P.S. love the tutorials!

Isnt that your own little self thought of story within the fallout universe?
I often roamed the world in fallout, sleeping in a small cabin and using that as my base of operation when roaming the nearby area's..
I didnt have to... but I wanted to

and i think that will be part of our aim in the level.

I was thinking of a way to do Fallout levels awhile back...

Basically, have 1 Intro level - Escaping your Vault ???, then have keys leading to several different levels, each being a town!
And Quests would work via sticker switch...

In [Town A] you start the quest, & are told to use the given key to enter the building (You obtain a Sticker)

You then leave teh level, & go to [Town C], roaming the Area, until you find the building - You then use the Sticker to open the door, & get a object - which gives you another sticker

You then return to [Town A], Find the Man, Stick the sticker on him, Getting your Reward/Next Quest...

Its gonna need ALOT of Logic

Yah, your right. It could be awesome with what Tommy said, but also very annoying to go from level to level just to sticker something.
Wow, i feel bad, every time a good idea come up i bash it . So what did you think of my V.A.T.S. system? could it be used? BTW you would HAVE to make Rivet City type a level!

I love fallout and have also spent many hours running through the wasteland. If you guys could recreate Fallout on LBP I will no doubt spend hours playing it. I've never played any of your levels, yet, but from what I've read over the past few days it would be amazing. My vote is build it and I would be happy to help in anyway that I could. Can't wait to see it...2010-03-19 11:59:00
