So, it seems Arrowchat is harder on our server than we anticipated. It has crashed it multiple times today, actually, so we have disabled it for now. I'm still deciding which route I want to take, but I'd like to hear your feedback as well - should we just remove Arrowchat and request a refund, or should we retain our license and just keep the chat disabled in the hopes that we'll one day be able to handle it? I do know that there is a feature in Arrowchat that allows us to redirect the bulk of the work from our server to another, but the costs associated with that are through the roof (we'd have to host two servers instead of one), so that's not an option for us right now. Let me know what you think. | 2010-03-16 00:19:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
I really dont know. On one hand, we all want a easy chat method instead of sending messages but on the other we dont want the website to crash. | 2010-03-16 00:27:00 Author: orang3dragon612 Posts: 243 |
I would get on the arrowchat forum and see what others are saying as well as the developers etc.. If it seems hopeless or needing even more servers, then I would say refund. They possibly just had a bad release and are currently attempting to fix and correct the issue. However if they come out with a corrective update soon, I would hang off for when you could either be around and monitor (weekend) or wait and see what others say about it on the arrowchat forum before trying. This way you minimize the risk to this site, especially when you cannot be around to admin like during the week. | 2010-03-16 00:28:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
I know Aya suggested some sort of IRC chat for all LBPC members. What are our options there? | 2010-03-16 00:52:00 Author: comphermc Posts: 5338 |
maybe only give it to some people intill it improves and a couple can handle it then proceed from there with more and more thats my feedback | 2010-03-16 01:03:00 Author: WESFUN Posts: 1336 |
Rather disappointed the Arrowchat hasn't worked, as I was looking forward to it coming back, BUT, it seemed to cause so many problems and didn't work very well anyway. Have been trying to get on the forum all night since about 5pm and just couldn't. Considering all the problems it caused I think we might be better without it. I would rather be able to get on the forum and have no chat, instead of not being able to get on the forum at all. I use Google chat and that works brilliantly. | 2010-03-16 01:11:00 Author: mrsvista Posts: 755 |
Well that is disappointing, considering that it seems to me that chat issues was why we changed to a newer version of vBulletin in the first place. Frankly, the overall ROI on that move has so far not proven itself - at least not to me. We lost way more than we've have gained thus far. My advice would be similar to jww's... hold on as long as you can (find out what your warranty period is - which I'm sure you have already done). See what your options are and what the team at ArrowChat can offer/suggest. If we are, as you say, the largest site using their product, then it would behoove them to work with you in achieving a reasonable solution. But if all else fails, get your (our) money back and regroup. There are many other options out there. | 2010-03-16 01:27:00 Author: v0rtex Posts: 1878 |
From doing a quick look around the ArrowChat forum, it seems they plan on releasing a new version today to fix issues with server load. http://www.arrowchat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=169 I've also read elsewhere that there is a 30 day refund period if we are unsatisfied. I'd say we should wait a bit to see what they actually fix. If things continue to be unstable then we are better off without it. | 2010-03-16 01:32:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
I agree with the above. Wait as long as you can and see what they manage to fix, but if it's still not viable, go for the refund. We've survived this long without it, what's another few months...? | 2010-03-16 01:57:00 Author: BabyDoll1970 Posts: 1567 |
at least its going to be fixed | 2010-03-16 03:29:00 Author: WESFUN Posts: 1336 |
The developer of Arrowchat (Jason) has taken a personal interest in our case and has gone out of his way to extend his help to us. I'll be going back and forth with him about this over the next while, and it's possible that we might be able to eventually sort these things out. | 2010-03-16 04:11:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |

Im a noob... What's Arrowchat??? Sorry | 2010-03-16 04:24:00 Author: Shhabbazz Posts: 746 |
So is that why the last few days I was getting those failed to load errors? | 2010-03-16 04:27:00 Author: shebhnt Posts: 414 |
i think you should wait and hopefully when later versions come out it will be fixed | 2010-03-16 06:41:00 Author: rseah Posts: 2701 |
I would prefer no chat and actually having a website It was sad not having lbpc last night. My refresh button got a little tired of being tapped. | 2010-03-16 08:40:00 Author: TheAdipose Posts: 533 |
Well I was never around in the days of CometChat so I wouldn't really miss ArrowChat if it weren't to come back. In saying that though I do think it would be worthwhile working through the problems as Arrowchat seems like a pretty cool feature for the forum and since you have Jason on board I think you can get it working, you seem to get everything else working. Thanks for taking down, it screwed up my pages pretty bad, and hope you get it working. | 2010-03-16 08:41:00 Author: SR20DETDOG Posts: 2431 |
I was talking about this with the Unofficial Community Managers group on skype last night, it does seam that arrowchat was the problem. Some people where saying they where loosing con to the site before arrow chat was on. I would suggest either to migrate to another host or to keep arrowchat disabled until someone perhaps takes a look at its source code and figures out a way to restrain the pain as it where. | 2010-03-16 10:27:00 Author: lbpholic Posts: 1304 |
Let me know what you think. Depending on the type of load, I might be able to fix it. I know Aya suggested some sort of IRC chat for all LBPC members. What are our options there? The advantage of the IRC option is that you can someone else's server for all the traffic, so there'd be no additional load. You can either use a web-based client, or a standalone one (which is better). For an example, go to http://java.freenode.net/?channel=lbpcentral - type in your username where it says "Nickname", and click "Connect". Once it's connected, you can chat to every other logged-in LBPC user at the same time, or you can create sub-rooms to chat to a subset of people, or double-click on a specific username to chat to just that person. Oddly enough, it looks as if CC already registered that channel about a year ago... dont think removing arrow chat as a set back think of it as a leap into improving this site. because its like a step foreword knowing something causes site problems helps and thats one thing less to worry about in the future. | 2010-03-16 14:13:00 Author: WESFUN Posts: 1336 |

I think it fell through pretty fast though. https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=9968-IRC-Channel | 2010-03-16 14:34:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
Yeah, we used to have an IRC channel a while back. I think it fell through pretty fast though. Meh, well if people don't actually want to chat with each other, then there wouldn't seem to be much point in bothering to install arrowchat then. | 2010-03-16 15:22:00 Author: Aya042 Posts: 2870 |
Meh, well if people don't actually want to chat with each other, then there wouldn't seem to be much point in bothering to install arrowchat then. Well... I don't remember the IRC experiment, but CometChat, despite it's issues, was incredibly popular here. And in fact, the promise of a better, bug-free chat option is what drove the fund-raising effort that allowed this new version of vBulletin. I do not mean to imply that we were duped, as I firmly believe that CC had the best interests of LBPC (and the community) at heart when these decisions were made. But the fact is, that other than a shiny new (more LBP-ish) UI, we have seen almost no other gains from the move to vB4. And what gains we have seen, IMO, are eclipsed by the losses of some truly great functionality: XP, live threads, among others. It's really too bad. | 2010-03-16 16:54:00 Author: v0rtex Posts: 1878 |
Gabbly is free - it doesn't take up much space either. I don't think anyway. It's at gabbly.com... Just put your url with the gabbly in it... | 2010-03-16 16:54:00 Author: Richasackboy Posts: 619 |
I'm so glad you have disabled it right now, I thought I'd never see you'll again. I think if we can't get ArrowChat to work my suggestion is get a refund and spend the money on something else that will benefit the site. EDIT: Are you sure it was ArrowChat that was causing this? Because I just got an error... D: | 2010-03-16 17:00:00 Author: Doopz Posts: 5592 |
Aha, so that's why I could not go onto LBPC yesterday! I want a chat, but do not let it go over our lovely website, please. @TheAdipose: I agree with you 101% | 2010-03-16 19:34:00 Author: moonwire Posts: 1627 |

I managed to get my hands on ##ps3 on freenode . It's pretty much empty except for myself, and three other frequenters. Also, the topic broke... I need to fix that. Anyways, if any of you want to try IRC the doors to ##ps3 are always open... Just don't expect people to be on when you first join. I'm pro-IRC chat for LBPC... Just throwing that out there. | 2010-03-20 08:21:00 Author: microchirp Posts: 412 |
I'm pro-IRC chat for LBPC... Just throwing that out there. Pah. You scarcely even play LBP these days. What is it now? MAG!? SPLITTER!! Anyways. I think the point of the arrowchat (or any other integrated web-based system) is its convenience, particularly for those who are unfamiliar with the IRC conventions. I have been working with CC to get arrowchat working in a sane fashion, and we're currently waiting on a new version which, based on what the developer said, should run without killing the website. | 2010-03-20 16:24:00 Author: Aya042 Posts: 2870 |

Hey! Those are some steep accusations there! No, no other game really... I have just been too busy. Anyways, yes I suppose... But, I don't really see much difference between IRC and all of these other things, cleaner buddy lists maybe. | 2010-03-21 01:19:00 Author: microchirp Posts: 412 |
so uh whats the status on chat? o.O | 2010-03-27 06:05:00 Author: Littlebigdude805 Posts: 1924 |
so uh whats the status on chat? o.O According to the developer, the next release will carry some improvements that will help remedy the problems we were facing. It probably won't solve them all, but we will be doing some stress-testing with each release until we get our server configured in such a way that it can handle Arrowchat. | 2010-03-29 00:10:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
So we are getting arrow chat back then? If so cool, because, to contradict my previous post, I would actually mind if Arrowchat were not to come back. After trying to have a live conversation via visitor messages I can really see why this is a favourite feature. | 2010-03-29 07:23:00 Author: SR20DETDOG Posts: 2431 |
I'm glad it wasn't just my computer that couldn't get on. Personally I don't really feel the need for a chat box. PM is fine. http://i.neoseeker.com/mgv/272671-Blackfalcon/671/5/animal0064hb2_display.gif | 2010-03-29 16:38:00 Author: Blackfalcon Posts: 409 |

PM is fine. http://i.neoseeker.com/mgv/272671-Blackfalcon/671/5/animal0064hb2_display.gif That's true but I don't like to use PM for long conversations since it fills up your very limited space, visitor messages aren't always suitable if you want to have a private conversation so chat is perfect. Plus if your in a thread for a long time maybe reading a long post, you can't tell when someone replys until you refresh, unless of course you're using chat . | 2010-03-29 18:05:00 Author: Doopz Posts: 5592 |
