This Too Shall Pass... but only with YOUR help!

I'm sure a lot of you will have seen OK Go's new music video for the song, This Too Shall Pass (if not, you can watch it below). This music video is sat there, just waiting to be recreated using LittleBigPlanet and instead of attempting and miserably failing at it myself or waiting for one talented individual to create it, LBPholic and I thought It would be really cool if instead we got a whole bunch of talented individuals on-board. Here's the video for those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qybUFnY7Y8w&hd=1

Handily, the video can be quite easily broken-up into individual, identifyable chunks so what I'm looking for is for people to sort of, 'adopt a segment' (or two). Once everyone is done and has their section working in-time to the music, we'll join-up all the seperate elements and I'll record a video (in high-def of course) and set the level to the music. Obviously, we'll have to take some "artistic licence" with it as we don't have the luxury of a z-axis and some parts may just be too complicated (but feel free to prove me wrong ), but as long as the general 'idea' of the section is recreated we should be fine. I'll be honest, I'm not amazing at creating (I tend to just sit back in awe of you people) but I think I'm competent enough to create part of this (maybe the dominoes at the beginning ).

I've tried to identify the key point of the video and have numbered them below. Just post a reply if you're interested in taking-part and if you have an idea of which section(s) you'd like to do. Some sections are strongly connected to each other so like I said, some people may want to do two adjoining sections.

Seems like a good plan!
I'll try some parts tomorrow & post how they turn out

It'll be good if we could turn this into a Level for the Community too!

Awesome idea! I've already got some ideas for some of them, but I'm not sure if I'll end up participating. One thing though, there should definitely be a lot of communication between creators of adjoining sections, otherwise transitions could look really sloppy.2010-03-16 00:39:00

I agree. I think that will probably be one of the hardest bits.

Of course, if anyone has any ideas for how we could make this project better, please let me know. I'm new to LBPC so don't really know much about how you guys run these things

That's funny, b/c I was just thinking of it myself! We have contact with the band, so we should be able to get this to them once it is complete! Awesome idea!2010-03-16 01:37:00

Alright, I think I'm gonna take a crack at doing 7-9. Not sure if I'll have time or will make anything half decent, but that's ok.2010-03-16 03:59:00

I've always thought that a Rube Goldberg machine would be perfect for LBP. I've seen some levels that were similar to Rube Goldberg creations but they didn't really capture the essence of one. They were more like, logic demonstrations. This would be really epic if it could be pulled off, great idea. I think the hardest part would be timing it with the music. OK GO did it though so why couldn't some LBP creators. I might be willing to help but I'm finishing up a big LBP project of mine in the next few days. After that I'd be free to work on a part or two. I am a musician of 30 years and I've been a gaming programmer for just as long. I'm a bit of an LBP noob though...

At least the paint-ball part at the end will be easy : )

This would be awesome. I unfortunately only get to play for a few hours on the weekend so I don't have the time to do a good job at recreating any sections. I wish you luck though!2010-03-16 06:23:00

Im impressed Chimpanzee except you havent put my name in there, Im the one who came up with the idea but ye guys so basically make one of those small areas and then send them to either me or Chimpanzee or publish them as a level and tell us what level to play. I've already started work on the first domino bit. Also im not sure if Chimp mentioned that make it LBPafied so for example in my domino run instead of a car at the beggining ive got a rocket Cheetah!

Sorry i would juts like to clarify he didnt steal this idea from me, we where talkign about it before he came online then suddenly thought of it it was a joint decision.

I think what we will do here is once me and Chimpanzee have got all the parts together we will tweak them slightly so that they look as if one big project if you know what i mean, we willl make the transitions look proper and like it was all built as one. So guys start creating.

Don't know how this project is coming along, but it's an interesting idea. I can say from experience (from building levels similar to this) it will be a monumental challenge to actually complete this, especially with a bunch of people working on different parts, then connecting them. Then making the whole thing the exact length of the song to sync with it. Like seriously, this is ambitious, it'll take a lot of work to complete. But if you're really determined it can be pulled off.

Plus the fact a lot of the sections won't work in 2D, but most parts just take some creativity to "LBP-ize" it. I think the key to making it look good will be using all the right materials and stickers to make it similar to the video. As in don't just use random materials, study the area you're working on and try to make every piece as close as possible to how it looks in the video.

Lemme know how it's coming, I might help if this project gets going.

a good idea to make sure it is synced with the song, can be to actually take the time on the real vid, then make sure it uses the same time on the same place in the lbp version.2010-03-24 22:29:00

Yeah, unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much interest. Oh well. Would have been great to have the king of Rube Goldberg machines on-board!

That's one great project!
I doubt I'll be able to help though,
I'll probably go crazy not being able to make it shift correctly. xD

Good luck though!
