Disable images/videos for new accounts

Archive: 26 posts

Okay, this is the second time I've seen questionable images be put up by spambots. I think new accounts shouldn't be allowed to put up images or videos for the sake of keeping this kind of junk off the site. Maybe only allow images and videos after a certain # of posts, or a certain time since creation.2010-03-15 13:18:00

It doesn't really have to be that high. I figure any spambot that tries to post something like 20 to 30 posts in a short time span to try to get around the limitation will be summarily banned before they have a chance to post any images.

The problem with this is that a lot of people who find this forum want to start posting their levels to get feedback. It would suck to join a community to get feedback on your level only to find out you can't put pictures of it up!2010-03-16 04:31:00

We do not plan to implement such a "feature." It has happened a few times, but that is normal for a site of this size. Just report any unfavorable posts and leave them be. If you reply to them, it will only draw attention to them. The best you could do in those cases when a Mod is not online is to post in a different thread in the same section, so as to bury the spam. If it's really bad, PM all mods that you can remember and report the post. We are sent e-mails when a post is reported.

Thanks.

That's a pretty good point about the level showcase. The showcase forums should probably be excluded from this, since I don't think spambots hang out in there anyway (as far as I've seen).

The 30 posts thing was just a random figure. I'm more leaning towards having it at 20 myself. We want to avoid penalizing new members as much as possible.

And yes Incinerator22, that's exactly the problem. I don't exactly care to be subjected to that imagery myself in order to be able to report the post to the mods, not to mention that it makes the site NSFW.

I personally think there should be mini-mods who have the power to delete posts like those. There was a link to some kind of dating website once and no mods were online at the time. I never saw that thread "sex clips" but from all the comments on peoples' profiles, a lot of people seemed to have seen it.2010-03-16 04:46:00

You've said that in every post you've made pretty much.

But how about when a post/thread is reported a certain amount of times it's temporarily deleted until a mod decides what to do with it? I know people could take advantage of this but surely there won't be like 10 people who'll report a post/thread for the fun of it.

That's actually not a bad idea. Another add-on to that would be to maybe force that person to have a certain amount of rep or posts to be able to report it. Just to ensure said person has a slight amount of sensibility.

Hm, Doopz's suggestion might work. I can't see LBPC abusing that like youtube... especially if there's some huge number needed like 10.

As for the suggestion in place, it seems kind of too much for too little. I never saw anything like that actually, and it doesn't seem to be enough of a problem to punish all new people.

I have thought about this as well, but wouldn't stopping spam bots posting pics and vids after a certain amount of posts make them post more so they can post there pics?

Don't get me wrong i think its a good idea, but its wheather the mods decide to use this system or not.

I don't think that stopping people posting videos or images untill they reach a certain number of posts is such a good idea for a few reasons. Firstly as shebhnt said a lot of people join this forum to showcase their levels/ideas and not being able to post any images would be quite a problem, then there's the people who would just continously post so as to get enough posts to be able to post images and videos, lastly there are many members who are not as active as others only posting very rarely meaning if they did have to reach x number of posts to be able to post images/videos it would take tham a very long time, which I can see frustrating many members.

This sounds like it might actually have a chance of working but I think comphermc hit the nail on the head. Personally I've never seen a problem like this happen but this is a big site and it would be foolish to say it doesn't happen. Maybe Doopz's idea could have a 1 month trial period or something of the like just to see if it works or if it gets abused.

But then that'd mean more times we can report them before they can post innapropriate pictures

But then you'd have to follow the link, whereas images are automatically displayed to you. The mods have already decided against the idea in any event.

We haven't gotten too many spambots as far as I can tell. The mods here are pretty active even when they're busy with other things, so the odds are good you would never even see a spambot post. I've seen forums with much more rampant numbers of spambots running around.

I'd still advise that if you see a suspicious-looking thread title (the few spambots we've gotten have been pretty obvious in this regard) you should check the preview before clicking it. Also as a general rule, never follow any link posted by a spambot.

What about that Sat Nav Spambot, I don't think that it was very obvious.

Satnav spambot is significantly less of an issue than kiddy porn spambot though
